I saw this film thinking Eddie Redmayne would be the main focal point of this film. I was wrong. Alicia Vikander delivers and extraordinary performance. She really carried the film until the end. I think on the surface, I was expecting the film to be about lily being transgender but I think the real underlying story was about the unconditional love Alicia's character had for Lily. And to me that was beautiful.

+Nicole Luera . 100% agree to me this is a very strong story of the deepest of love between a woman (amazing acting) and her husband. Where the innocent games they play turn out to be lifechanging. I cried inside for most of the film for the girl how she lost her husband to Lily.
Wow, this movie touched me deeply.

I have also looked up some stuff abt Gerda and apparently she might've been at least bisexual or maybe even gay so I think she loved both Einar and Lili and that it helped her so much with dealing with Einar's transition. I think she loved both Einar and Lili and she just wanted the person inside the body whether it was a male or a female to be happy and I just have so much admiration for her for that.

+Issaacc S And when you say that, you're inferring that this inference is false?
Since 'prettiness' (as opposed to simply 'attractiveness') is typically a word used to describe the 'softness' of one's features, I'd say, due to bone structure and other such variables humans use to judge or estimate anyone's level of attractiveness to one particular sex, either directly or by proxy, by general standards of beauty you're mistaken. 'Beauty' mightn't be objectively verifiable, obviously, but levels of 'perceived prettiness' as qualitative data is nonetheless measurable (as a statistic), so the inference might appear to be making a statement about objective facts of beauty, but that's your problem.

Although I support the trans community's desire to see trans roles be played by trans actors going forward, I do think Eddie Redmayne did a superb job in this, and I think many people forget how little representation trans characters and trans issues received a mere six years ago. We've come a long way in that time, and although I'm not generally the biggest Tom Hooper fan, I have to say, I do think sensitive and compassionate films like this helped.

    • @mkot6528

I think you hit the nail right on the head. Six years ago this was a huge thing. A story about the first transgender woman Lily. I just had my surgery, the same surgery and this movie hit me right in the feelings, I cried the entire night. To see such a big movie about people like me. Eddie redmayne did an amazing job, and had conversations with the transcommunity. He is a big supporter of speaks openly speak against JK hatespeech for transpeople. This movie changed things. Along will all the other big shows. You can debate that this should be played by a Transwoman, there are multiple outcomes of that conversation. But one thing is clear Eddie nailed this job en has been a big supporter of the community. He is seeing too that things are changing, for LHBTIQA people. That why he said if they would make the movie now, he would have said no, and strongly advice to give a Transwoman the opportunity the furfill that role.
      Thank you eddie redmaybe

@@mkot6528 Brilliantly put, and of course you personally have more understanding and insight than me on this topic, but I'm pleased to see our views align perfectly. I do hope future generations will see this sensitive and thoughtful film in the context of the time in which it was made. As you and indeed Eddie Redmayne say, it would *now* be a mistake for him to essay this particular role, but at even as recently as 2015, it was a genuinely admirable step on his part.

Literally 90% of the comments are gushing about how Eddie looks better than them as a girl. Can we just talk about his performance? There is this unrestrained rawness in his acting that always made me cry. The trailer and the music moved me as much as the movie did. It's still my favorite film to this day and everytime I watched it, I cried. He's not an actor that gets called on for the same damn role, to play a hero or whatnot. What he has that many actors don't is variety. He plays an awkwardly charming New Scamander in FBAWTFT, a wicked villain Balem Abrasax in Jupiter Ascending, and a disabled genius in The Theory of Everything. There are some films I have not watched of him but I know that he's brilliant and deserves way more attention than the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Christian Bale (I watched The Dark Knight trilogy and he's definitely not my favorite Batman), Jennifer Lawrence (I thought her acting was pretty good and convincing but she keeps landing the same kind of roles!), and Tom Cruise (Okay, everybody likes Mission Impossible but I think Tom Cruise is more Ethan Hunt than Tom Cruise. He's just that) His Oscar is well deserved! I cannot wait for his performance in The Crimes of Grindelwald.

To really know Christan Bale, go back to his first film with Spielberg, EMPIRE OF THE SUN. Nothing has been more brilliant in some ways than that in all these years. American Psycho also was one of his finest broad range performances. After that it just seemed like reruns by comparison. After his middle years I am not sure that he really took care of himself/?? albeit a stellar career.

***** Same with the way you dress and present yourself is a waste of money. It's nice to see you're the first one in line to give up you own freedom and must now dress and present as the peanut gallery sees fit.

The climax of the trailer leading to the mysterious piano piece at the end of the trailer and how it ended with Lili looking so beautiful and confident made me fall in love with Eddie Redmayne. The setting of the movie was set back in those times of new discoveries and I don't know how to really put it into words. Like the time when humans were still so gentle like but yet intriguingly mystical. A time of enlightenment that made the era seem so.... so fascinating. A time where things in the human nature itself was beautiful. I don't know. I love to watch movies set back in these times. It fascinates me and Eddie having the courage to play as Lili only makes this movie all the more beautiful. I will be rewatching this again.

for the people who are saying this is boring or they've just seen the whole movie just by watching the trailer, it's in fact untrue. there are many tiny moments, that actually has a huge impact on the story and movie, which aren't in this trailer. what you've just seen is barely anything. actually, the tiny important moments portrayed by the characters are the ones that brings out lots of emotions and meaning to this entire story, that makes the movie a beautiful one. the cast too. this is my favourite and one of the most beautiful movies i've watched. give this movie a shot. looking for stellar performance and true meaning and lots of crying, this movie's the one.

Watched this movie for the first time and I'm honestly speechless. It's so interesting! From a psychological point of view it's outstanding. The fact that Einar died the moment Lili refused to give him back to Gerda and Gerda just carried on loving Lili because she still saw her husband was one of the most heart-breaking things I've ever seen on TV. Even though her husband faded away so many months ago, she never actually mourns him because to her, he's still there, but he isn't. My mind is blown! Powerful, brilliant and thought-provoking. My only real criticism on the film is that Lili's feelings fade away for Gerda the moment she rejects Einar's existence. I thought that was selfish of Lili because she still has Einar's memories and should remember Gerda the way Einar would. That frustrated me. How could Lili not love Gerda the same way? Personality disorder? Gender reassignment doesn't take away love! Anyway, amazing movie. 10/10.

Lili loved Gerda so much ... maybe not as Einar did before ... but she was able to notice that Gerda was a wonderful human being and so selfless but after all she couldn’t lie to her ... it’s so complicated but that was true unconditional love.

from what i can see about the real story, the real lilli and gerda had a stronger relationship. gerda didn’t feel as bitter about lilli’s transition. so i think it might have been a choice to push the plot in a certain direction when they made the film

Such a beautiful and sentimental movie. I felt so sorry for both Gerda and Lili. I could only try to imagine the pain from both sides, and I have to say, Gerda is the definitely the bigger person because she selflessly let go the man she loved and embraced the reborn of Lili. As for Lili, I admire her bravery for seeking who she truly was, even if it meant death.
