We are in awe of the decor! The Notre Dame carpet looks incredible.🤌Which of these important pieces of French furniture would you love to have in your home? 😍
Why did you use the Italian hand
Neither,
Prefer Italian 👌
As a French man, I can tell you this guy is speaking in a very distinguished French, a pleasure to listen to!
Good to know! Are you referring to the narrator of the video or the Director of the Collection?
@@cg9612 The director
weird kinks.
This is a very French comment
He seems like a very distinguished gentleman.
Is it just me or it is refreshing to know that many young people are interested in and dedicated to institutions like this?
honestly same, I'm surprised that most of the people they showed looked pretty young (hopefully theres more than them)
Pay them well enough, and they will come. The problem with many institutions is that because of austerity, they have been choked for the past 15 years.
Because they're surrounded by a culture that allows those interests. Most young kids are interested in making things, that goes away though when you are constantly told that you need a real job
lol this kind of demanding manual labor is a young person's game.
The French know what they are doing when it comes to Design, pushing young ones, other countries you have older people that sort of gatekeep and have huge egos...
I've done a school of Design in South of France and it was fierce the teachers I got, you have to try your absolute best or you get roasted. idk about other countries but a degree in design yet alone being the best student in the class is no joke.
This is a 2 watcher, 1 to read his words and 1 to look at that unbelievable furniture. 😮
Exactly me 😂
As an artist, I am really glad they opened their doors to the public. Seeing such amazing craftsmanship is what inspires people to pursue such an industry and join an institution like this.
When you see something truly beautiful as a child can motivate many people to go down that path. I know for I was the same.
My favorite part was learning that Mobilier National serves the public as well as government workers! Those library reading room chairs looked magnificent and quite comfy!
This is something I find the French to be particulary good at: creating works that not only are functional, but beautiful. I wish that more care was taken in today's day and age to make buildings and furniture that are worth preserving for the future. More columns, more arches, more inlay, more scrollwork, more laquer, I say!
And good on the French for spending their state funds to preserve and glorify the beautiful things that are their culture and country produced!
This is part of the french "art de vivre". It tends to disapear, globalisation is at its work.
Are you willing to pay, let's say 5-8,000 dollars for a wall cabinet? or does most of your furniture come from IKEA?
Wait. Did he just give an entire interview about our most precious furniture collections while sitting on an industrial mass-produced stackable folding chair???
A great mark of french modesty and professionalism ! He isn’t corrupt by the luxury of is gouvernemental job .
@@chtur2299 In French we would say : "Les cordonniers sont les plus mal chaussés".
This is actually pretty impressive and the fact that they still do furniture for all this places after so many years wow 👌🏼 and everything so beautifully done
I love how they used all Saint-Saëns pieces as the background music! ❤️
As a Historian and Curator, a place like this is my wet dream!
Absolutely gorgeous furniture and decor; everyone working at Mobilier National should be proud of what they do.
That was so fast ……I wanted him to keep talking. Such a tease of what they do and what they keep in stock for restoration. To see that craftsmanship today and work on these treasures. What a talented crew of people. Amazing
I'm familiar with art restorations but the idea of furniture restoration is very interesting. Great coverage as always, Great Big Story.
this art direction feel so much like Wes Anderson, i love it!
Did anyone else notice all of the Wes Anderson motifs in the cinematography and editing of this video?
I guess I’m uncultured but what’s your comment referring to? Genuine question
How do you mean like the tongue in cheek editing with actually seen some of the characters we normally wouldn't? I did notice that I enjoyed it added some whimsy to it.
@@rings22the first thing I noticed was how the camera framed the scene of the interview. The camera was directly in front of the interviewers and interviewee, swapping between perspectives as they took turns speaking. Second and most obvious motif was at around 3:40 when it showcased the workers doing their work, and they all pause and look up at the camera with a plain expression. There was also a lot of front facing, symmetrical shots of furniture. Wes Anderson does that in almost all of his movies.
Yes. Its delightful
@@liamdickinson8170 oh cool! I’ll have to look this guy up
magnifique, ça c'est la France du beau et de l'excellence que l'on aime! longue vie au Mobilier National
Loving this new video format; tongue in cheek with the crew but also keeping true to the usual GBS style and format. Meanwhile, seems like French Presidents lifestyle is filled with joie de vivre.
Your channel is help to improve my language skills. Thank u from Azerbaijan 💚🇦🇿
I gotta say, the slight change in direction this channel has taken (like including the camera men in the video) has improved the videos immensely. Great big story was a hidden gem back in the day, good to see theyre back. And they're not owned by CNN anymore, even better.
You told such a great story! I loved the everything: the topic, the animations, the shots and the music! I love that you put Camille Saint-Saëns! Wonderful job! :D
Extremely well-chosen music for this video. Love the Saint-Saëns!
Wait you guys are back!? I loved this channel but thought it went inactive a few years ago? I have a lot of recap to do now :)
very interesting watch! french furniture is so unique and beautiful
What a wonderful place. Brilliant people looking after it all. Love it
Love this channel, the great big story..
3:39 pure Wes Anderson 😎
So if the kingsmen are tailor
The statesmen are brewer..
Then the French version is furniture maker?
Great episode!
wow the most beautiful furnitures ive seen in my life🤯🤯
I like Impressions de France causally playing in the background
I’ll just wait till it’s on sale
You are dreaming, my friend !! Jamais !! Never ever France will sell a piece of furniture. We prefer to gift it as "cadeau diplomatique" to other contries. To let a piece of ours savoir-faire outside and give the opportunity to other say "Beautiful, isn't it?! That was made in France !!". Soft power my dear. Soft power... You want one ?! So agreed with us on...😂
@@christinedu5211im pretty sure it was a joke ahah
@@Qtopian Yes, I get it before write my answer. :-)
I 💖💖 this channel, please keep on going. I wish you guys upload new video every week or so.
I like furniture carved from ships of war . Timber with a story of glory and sacrifice. Priceless…
Fantastic!
great story
This was so cool to watch! As a French person, although I would have preferred it in English for others to understand easier, but seeing how ✨ distinguished ✨ the french is, It might be more compréhensible with just subtitles
Have some self-respect for your own language standing up to english rather than bowing down to anglo-homogeny and anglo-centrism. What they did is a mark of respect.
@@Game_Hero Diantre! Je suis désolé, sur une lieu de découverte anglaise, de rendre cet passation de savoir plus facile! Vous m'en voyez sincèrement désolée cher ami

IKEA : "but but where is the hex screwdriver ??😳😢"
Wow GBS actually come back alive? Nice!
Absolutely fantastic French Furniture
I didn't know this channel was back
Very cool
l'éloquance de cet homme est superbe :)
Cool!
everyone is so young... one would think that workers at a place so ancient and that requires this level of craftmanship would have more experienced workers
GBS Nice
Wow ❤
wow!!!
cette parti la de la France est vraiment belle
2:31 I heard this song from Crash Tag Team Racing!
This felt like a wes anderson flick.😂
On Huerta!
The bed bugs are gonna love it ❤
Oui. Bonne vidéo
The French have a knack for all things fancy. It’s a shame us commoners are stuck with IKEA.
Even in France we have Ikea
No everyone wants fancy stuff. Many prefer the simplicity of IKEA.
@@samueljaramillo4221IKEA is trash and ugly.
Yes, IKEA is affordable & doesn't break my bank.😂😂😂
No it’s not a shame. Not everyone wants that high priced fancy stuff.
You guys back?
It's great to see the French haven't lost their craftsmanship.
When does the restoration beg the question of the ship of Theseus?
Belle institution ❤
Btw furniture tapestry means upholstery in English
Ow Jesus....amazing 🙄
This video has a slight Wes Anderson vibe to it.
I wonder what the guy talking thinks of IKEA? lol
kinda looks like adam friedland of the adam friedland show
I could use a new coffee table, got any?
👍
He won't like it when I tell him that everything eventually turns to dust.
is the cinematography supposed to be a Wes Anderson parody?
How about contemporary furniture for every each family??? Do they have such?? 😂😮
They're back????
they've been back for a while
This video would have been much better if it had been dubbed.
As a French man, I feel ashamed. Our country is living far beyonds its means
Joseph-Ignace Guillotin was the one and only appropriate carpenter for French aristocrats.
I want to hear this guy go on a cursing rant. Like that line in matrix 2 or 3
Mama mia! Oh... wrong country
"Secret institution" not really
Lovely clip though, down to the faux Te Deum
Subhanallah
Baquete
Now I understand why the every family doesn't have access to 21st century modern architecture applied .... 😮...they are preoccupied with the dusty chairs 😂😂🎉
By day they make furnitures… in the night they carry out assassinations and espionage
just think about it
you got only 1 copy of this
if it break or somehow lose it
its the end of a whole story
He also likes one piece
I can get this on Amazon, easily 😂
Is there more than one current French president?
Tacky furniture

the palace of versaille? more like let's design a palace without toilets or a sewer system. ohhhhhhhh gotta love the french. imagine walking through your palace and seeing people pooping and peeing in the corners.
Where do them the French keep all the African loot what is that department called

I dont know man. But if france could get back all of its net expenses (France is the only colonial empire that has lost money in its colonies), we would much appreciate it😁😁
Conlonialism
5:26 Hilarious, new chairs for a famous and beautiful location, and they go with the most bland, boring furniture possible. Could have been IKEA for all the artistry visible in it. At least this should last longer.
It's an utility chair, not a ceremonial one.
@@wikirexmax Ah yes, the classic post-modernist take. "This is to be used, thus it should, nay MUST be bland, if not outright UGLY!"
By that standard, the building they are in should be a plain, grey box, and the shelves should be unadorned as if made to be in a warehouse.
So we the peasants are told to reduce our carbon emissions, but how much energy goes into that furniture? Why can't the leaders lead by example and use the cheap recycled furniture we are told to use to save the planet
Yikes. Talk about a fantasy world and disparity.
I think its all ugly tbh i prefer solid colors and modern
THIS is a "great big story?" And we should care about this...why, exactly?
"Garde-Meuble Royal" (previous name) exist since 1604, 419 years. Why Great Big Story can't talk about it? Propose them others topics, curious to see what you come up with 😂
Terrible editing. No thought was given into admiring the works, merely flashing them on screen was deemed to suffice?
Agreed, they were outright insulting to the guest as well. Apparently they were tryin to be funny and ironic but it just comes off as cynical, rude, and a poor wes Anderson imitation.
@erawanpencil very cocky and arrogant, indeed
