Firstly, if you try and convince a client that you know everything, then why should they pay, however if ensure exactly what you can do and what you need time to investigate, then the decision in my mind is, a, do I learn enough to win more business later on, or b, it's specific to this client/bid, I'll make a judgement as to if the customer is charged or not. I don't think customers mind paying, as long as they know what they are paying for.

I had an Indian restaurant ask me to look into a website / app / food ordering system that would integrate into the ticket machine in the front of house and kitchen. I spent 3 hours looking into it for them, pricing it up and letting him know what was involved. After seeing it he said to me - you do social media and facebook ads for that price also. I was shocked and said ... er ... no. He said to me that i'm too expensive but he'll give me a curry. I was a bit shocked but took what I could get. 3 Hours for a takeaway curry. Not sure it was worth it. He went with the service he was already with anyway. A lesson was learned that day!

Oh man, I feel your pain. I have been there too in similar circumstances. The big thing is to never let it happen again.... I hope.

@@mikeys4u nope. That would have been 4 hours work surely?

Made this mistake recently with a client who had used me previously for 2 low ticket websites. Spent 11 hours researching a solution for functionality for a new website they needed that they 'definitely wanted me to build'. They then implemented that exact solution, but using another firm, who I assume were cheaper. Idiotic decision made on misplaced trust.

We've all been there. I once spent in excess of 90+ hours over 2 weeks experimenting with solutions and then client just got someone else to use my tips. Never again.
