Meet the all-new Renault 5!
It’s a futuristic yet retro-looking new electric car that follows on from the original Renault 5 which went out of production back in 1996. The question is, will this all-new small EV offer enough to catch your attention over its key competitors?
Well when it comes to the design, the new Renault 5 is a real looker! There are a whole load of design cues that hark back to the original car, from the square-shaped headlights & fog lights, through to the tail lights that are in the same shape as on the original car. The door design also mimics the old car, although there are a few all-new features, including the option to have a two-tone coloured roof. All-in-all, we think it looks great!
Step inside and the new Renault 5 comes with a really smart interior. There’s a joint digital dial & infotainment screen, and there are denim-effect materials on the seats, the dash and the doors! Sure there are some scratchy plastics to be found, and the storage isn’t the best, but what do you expect from a small car? Oh, and of course, don’t forget the baguette holder…
The Renault 5 comes with two battery options - a 40kWh battery that has a range of up to 186 miles, and a 52kWh battery with a range of up to 249 miles. There are also three motor options, with the entry-level delivering 95hp, while the range-topper puts down 150hp.
The Renault 5 starts from just £25,000 - so is it worth it?! Stick with Mat and find out for yourself!

Please do more exclusive reviews carwow because I really like this format.
USELESS! These cars are too small, cramped, slow and lack any ground clearance. Also not sure if it's even awd. Small European vehicles are so overrated, that's why some of them aren't even on sale on premium north American market and they suck on the other main premium market, China.
Hey Mat you should review EVs from Tata Land Rover specially Tata Land Rover Tiago ev if you are looking for best VFM EV you can get this as low as 9000 GBP brand new and it comes with above 4 star safety rating in Global NCAP. Have a good day.
That car looks beautiful, but the backseats are completely useless for anyone unless they’re extremely small or wanna gain claustrophobia. Also, what’s with the baguette holder ? That doesn’t seem very useful for anyone outside of France but I could be wrong on that I just know I would have no use for that. I think they should just turn it into 2 seater car because there’s no front trunk so to help with storage like groceries and with the backseats being so useless if you find if you could fold them flat to kind of use us an overnight bed if you had to stay somewhere for the backseats, but besides that they’re useless
Of course we are overrun by US models in Europe.😊
I love these retro takes of classic cars. I would love if everyone made these. They are an homage to great cars.
My favourite is the New Countach.
Renault is also doing a take on the old R4 and the original Twingo after this, so I'm excited for those.
Need a pug 205 remake
I want a Volvo 240
I'm sure one day there will be an EV with interchangeable bodies. Underneath they're all the same anyway
Derek here, Matt's man baby father. I'll call over in 9 months 😉
😂😊
Ha! I've set a reminder! 😂 @carwow
Hope you're going to pay child maintenance for this baby 😂
What the hell???
The charge indicator on the bonnet is actually just brilliant.
Matt and his opinions 🤦♂️
Yep, transformed a functional festure of the older car into a functional feature of the new car, just in a different sense. Of course the EV doesn't need an air intake, but removing something that's part of the signature of the original would be wrong in my opinion. Excellent adaptation.
Agreed. Matt just being Matt and a bit of a drama queen. Gotta be Zany and/or controversial for views these days... Matt & Carwow are becoming a bit predictable from that perspective. If this carries on it'l soon have to be rebranded CarYawn....

This looks like a hit in the ass, the design is great and finally people might understand that they don't need expensive and hugely bulky cars.
Tbh, find bigger bulkier cars better, as in this video, proves back seats arent really usable, inside is cheap and tacky (plastic), though unlike this model and a personal preference, like the feeling of being in a sort of enclosed cockpit, smaller cars tend not to do this.
@@ascelot this is an especially small car, even just a golf has heaps of room.
@@ascelotThe back seats were fine until they had a tall driver. Would still work for the majority of people.
@@ascelot bigger bulkier is better but generally cost way more than that. There is next to no competition for this car, Citroen e-C3 and the ID2 in 2 years from now. They are probably not as appealing that the R5.
@@ascelot "Not usable" Millions of families have had Golf's/Polo's and small Peugeots, Ford Fiesta's and such... Just say you want comfort but stop lying. I can put a baby seat in both my Punto and my wife's Micra with no issues whatsoever. We had 3 doors Polo's when I was a child, this was perfectly fine.
I dunno when or why people suddenly started thinking segment-B cars were unusable but this reeks of manufactured consent to me. No actually, you really do not need that SUV.
Great to see more cool small electric cars instead of endless SUVs, love the design and packaging of this!
as an owner of 2 SUV's I'm agree ))
I also agreed with this.
Im surprised that they didn’t have an old Renault 5 in the show room to compare
They had some in the next 'room' - but it would have been useful to illustrate how much larger this one is in comparison with the original.
They did, Mat just didn't film them. They actually had a whole lineup of old 5s.
Yep, Johnny Smith on The Late Brake Show shows 3 older generations in the intro of his video
Go watch Petrol Ped to see the design evolution for Mk.1 through EV Prototypes
the OG R5 is so tiny it would have been a great comparison yes
Look at the car's face. It looks happy with its own existence.
Cutest comment :)
Renault have absolutely nailed it with this thing. I expect to see hundreds of them on the road in the next year. I'll take mine in yellow.
Another thing to charge on top of your phone, smartwatch , laptop, etc ... .Shitty battery for shitty mileage and shitty charging.
@@993bluezones9 it's literally less effort than a petrol car. I get home and if needed I plug it in using the charger that's 1 foot away from the car. Far less effort that standing in the cold filling it up with petrol.
@@nikc1313 You forget that majority of europe and the word doesnt live in their single unitary house with private parking man. The problem of electric cars are the shitty battery and the charging infraestructure , While both are shit, electric cars will be shit.
@@993bluezones9 I'm not expecting the majority of the world to buy one. There are plenty of middle income earners who do have private driveways and can install a charger. For those people these cars can be a great investment. I lease 2 electric cars and between my wife and I we cover about 16-18k miles per year. We pay maybe 100 a month more on the leased electric cars than we would if they were petrol but easily save that on fuel/tax/servicing costs. On top of that we get the small convenience of not having to visit petrol stations a couple of times a month. Not to mention the better performance and comfort of the electric powertrains.
They clearly don't work for all. Probably don't even work for most and the government/car industry need to come up with solutions. Doesn't stop them being a great product for many people. Your comment is a bit childish and uninformed. They obviously don't work for your circumstances but doesn't make them a rubbish product.
That’s the best Renault I have seen love the nostalgic retro finish
Plus it still had a trademark engine sound.
@@purwantiallan5089 It's EV, it has no sounds
Finally a somewhat sensible car - cute design, under 1.5tons, not huge, not pricey, stylish. Okay small space on the back seat but in general something that makes sense in the EV world.
I hope this SUV trend will die, but I don't think it will 😢
Interestingly the R5 will cheap while being made in France. Renault proves that it is not mandatory to relocate the production of an electric car in China.
@@SurgeDashcam Or humanity dies sooner
I'd say the key competitors aren't really the ID3, Mini Cooper or Zoe. Based on the 25k EUR price, it'd be the new Citroen e-C3, the later coming VW ID2 or maybe even the Dacia Spring.
Competition is the Corsa/208/C4, those are frequently discounted to £22k.
Dacia spring is an AliExpress car made completely out of plastic. At least this is an actual car
@@theairaccumulator7144 This is literally fancy Dacia bro.

That's definitely not the phrase I know. "Red and green are seldom seen, but upon a fool" is the one I'm familiar with.
This car is a mixture of modern classic and very cool 😍
I currently own an '88 renault super 5 as a 6km round trip commute car. Cheap to maintain, as just about every mechanic has old parts and knowledge to work on it, cheap to run at about 4 to 5 l/100km, and cheap to insure with a classic car insurance at about 30€ per year. Has a new paint job and upholstery and is really stylish. Amazing buy financially, while also turning heads! This would be the perfect upgrade if i eventually get fed up with old car problems.
Renault Super 5 1988 still very reliable like the Dodge Viper.
just be glad you dont live in NA, the mafia aka insurance companies over here would call it a classic car and charge you 30 euro a day
8years ago, back in Portugal I was still doing 400km trips between hometown and Lisbon much comfortable but definitely reliable, after emigrating ended up getting rid of it 😪
They did a good job keeping the design near to what the concept promised. Best looking retro car in a while. As this is also reasonably priced, it could sell quite well.
I really see myself getting one tbh. yellow with the gold trim would look ace.
@@Reddsoldier Indeed. The concept was yellow too. Great color for the R5.
@@Reddsoldierwhat a joke. Have fun with your 12 second 0-60 and charging daily (which costs more than filling up btw) it’s a complete SCAM💀 room temp IQ if anyone buys this.
It would be half decent if they gave it a turbo 4Cyl. Too bad
Now give it a petrol engine and an RS version.
Yes sir 💯
it aint gonna happen but it would be cool, maybe there will be someone who will do a custom swap who then will make that a mass production conversion kit
Mid/rear engined, and turbo charged too
That would be so cool
1,6 l turbo 4cyl, 200-300 hp and I am all good mate👍
It seems the French are still great making hatchbacks...this is THE coolest production electric car I've seen 😁 just hope it drives well
Not at all. They’ll be out of business for certain within the decade. So Suprised they’re still around already. No one’s buying this Crp. Who wants a 95 Hp electric French POS car?💀💀💀 room temp IQ people maybe…
Don't agree about the charging-indicator 5 thing on the bonnet.
I think it looks great and really gives the car more character.
This will definitely my next car when my current ev leasing time runs out. Drove three R5s back in the early 90s. One GT Turbo. Up to this day I have no idea how i survived those first years after getting my driving license and had more luck than common sense. When it was not in the repair shop (which was often), I loved driving the GT Turbo and was very sad when we had to separate due not being able to afford and maintain it as a student (had 911 insurance rates lol). The Alpine Version of this new R5 will definitely be on my wishlist. I may even be able to afford it this time.
Mat, contrary to what you say, the 5 was offered as both a 3- and a 5-door. For both generations.
I think a baguette holder is the most french accessory I've ever seen... I just wish we had bakers here in NA then I could actually use that. Nothing beats fresh baker baguette
red and green together? it's natural. Look at any red flower, it's still beautiful
One of the most exciting cars in years, and perhaps the most exciting affordable one in a very long time including more expensive electric cars (how far this industry has fallen?) This could be a game changer. I want one
Toyota 2000GT 1967 also looks stunning along with 2024 Renault 5.
I think this is the best looking EV that I’ve seen (but I too did used to love the old Renault 5 GT Turbo).
Damn it. I had heart set on getting one of these, and now I see my tall sons won't fit in the back? Well, I suppose walking would be good for them😉. I love that car❤
Being squashed in the back of an R5 (or original Mini, come to that..) is all part of the experience. If your boys don't appreciate it, they can always enjoy the delights of public transport! 😈

Been a while since I've been so excited by a car! A good looking electric hatch with good range and charging that is nice and small instead of another boring impractical SUV as well as the ability to keep certain features turned off *cough* lane assist
I love the nostalgic styling
I'm looking for something small, fairly cheap and electric to complement my big diesel BMW, which is rather awkward to drive around town, but most of the industry seems focused on building unncesssarily big fat and heavy crossovers. This Renault 5 seems to hit the mark for me - low £20k, small, efficient, has proper buttons and switches, and actually looks different instead of "big swoopy grey box".
but it has same crossover look, and it's rather big in comparison with Matt
also there is a new Citroen e-C3 coming which is a bit cheaper and smaller iirc. the French might have a vreak-through with smalll city EVs. they are pretty affordable compared to the German ones
also Chinese ones will come soon which will be very cheap too
@ricequackers If you are open to second hand cars have a look into the EV Golfs. it's practical and plenty of space for a smaller car to drive around town. Picked up a fairly new one for 14k
BMW depreciates heavy
If u don't mind something 2nd hand the BMW i3 is a classic, and still holds up well to this day. Its also a lot more spacious than these cars but still holds up as a very good city car.
For being a naughty boy Matt didn't get a baguette like the other car reviewers.
I'm glad the 5 doesn't have a lot of HP, you don't need it when you're pottering about the city or town or traveling to the nearest city
