Thats unlikely. It is probably just in your mind, or youve gotten so used to the scent. 13 year old bottle..the alcohol content likely has gone down significantly which would only make the fragrance stronger. Now if you were to say the scent doesnt smell the same thats a different story.

@frankzajac3158 The human olfactory system is extremely complex, it's highly unlikely the fragrance is "weaker" it's just your perception changing. Our olfactory system is insanely influenced by many variables
Also not to mention, maturation and maceration. There's a reason some people wait months or even a year to start using fragrance, they get stronger with age not weaker

  • @bernardtalbert6729
    @bernardtalbert6729 Před rokem +48

The majority of fragrances will last several years as long as you storing them to avoid heat. Several CZcams fragrance reviewers have hundreds to a thousand bottles going back as far as 10 years of collecting and they rarely report any going bad. But some do actually go bad or change color. It's definitely an issue to consider if you are purchasing old discontinued fragrances which are no longer available and often sold at heavily inflated prices.
The most common sources of heat are your room temperature (e.g. HVAC setting, near fireplace/space heater), exposure to light (i.e. avoid direct sunlight) and humidity (i.e. avoid bathroom). Some people keep bottles stored in their original boxes. Some store them in a closet. Some keep them stored in a display case or bookshelf.

However and thankfully, I still use quite a few of those that were in the bathroom. Still get compliments when I do use them, longevity is the same, I can pick up the notes just fine! So can’t say in my experience the fluctuating humidity did much. A lot of them were bottles with open atomizers too (Spicebombs, Essentric Molecules, etc).

I thought I'd give it a shot again, just out of curiosity because I haven't smelled it in such a long time and I was surprised by what my nose picked up. It smelled nothing like I remember, the top notes where completely gone and the whole scent just smelled like a bit of nothingness.
Like I said, the bottle is probably about 4 years old now, 100ml about 2/3 gone and it stood on a shelf close to a window in a room that get's very warm in summer when the AC isn't running, the perfect combination to kill a perfume I guess...

Wow- Great video and the timing is perfect . I have begun watching several mens fragrance videos but I feel this one is the most informative of the bunch . Watching a bombardment of daily 10 ten lists can be overwhelming and while collecting everything is just not practical I also see it may be much more practical to purchase 1.7 oz bottles rather than the 3.4 oz size or occasionally available larger size bottles especially if the game plan is to own a dozen or more great scents . There are only so many days in the year and impossible to use all of them . Perhaps this is why CurlyFragrance chooses 12-15 sprays when she goes out in the evening - she wants her moneys worth and realizes no scent lasts forever . This is the only video I have seen since I've begun fragrance channel viewing that has mentioned this topic -thank you .

All of this sounds very reasonable, except in my experience its simply not true. All of my fragrances, except for a few backup bottles, are out of their box and have been sprayed at least a few times. My house never gets too warm and I try to keep them out of direct light, but there's certainly light in the room in the day time. And yet I've never had a fragrance go bad. Some fragrances change with aeration and time, usually for the better. But none of my fragrances have "gone bad" or even changed very much on the top end compared to a brand new bottle or sample. I don't know the detailed chemistry as to why this is, all I can say its what I have experienced.

I'd love to know your thoughts on the Roja Dove fragrance house and the different scents. I've really appreciated your in depth knowledge on the house of Creed which has helped me greatly in buying. Recently, I've put Elysium right up there with Millesime Imperial in terms of favorite opening of any fragrance, so I would love to hear your expertise on another niche brand.

I have 20+ years old citrusy fragrance and they are still pretty good but they were store perfectly and not many air was in there,
I agree that if you have just a small amount left you better finish it than keep them for special occasions only.
Not a refrigerator maybe a portable automated wine cellar but they rarely allow the correct temperature of 10 to 12 celsius.
Most unopened bottle, perfectly store, should last a least 10 years up to 20 years but the top notes might aged a bit. If it was cheap it might age badly as opposed to more high end aroma chemicals and natural ingredients might macerate to perfection.

It doesnt really expire at all if stored properly. It actually gains quality over time from oxidation and loosing alcohol content. The smell might change, but its not really gonna lose quality. As long as its sealed properly it will only smell better with time.

alcohol based fragrances are very hydrophilic, meaning they will not penetrate your skin nearly as well as something like an oil. As fragrances oxidize, The compounds produced can serve as irritants of the skin by making them more lipophilic and thus better able to penetrate the protective barrier if your skin. Oxidized compounds can also trigger histamine reactions as well, which can cause hives.

i have a LOT of fragrances (13 or so, which is more than the average joe but nothing compared to ppl in the community), and i just bought 2x 100ml bottles (bc i wanted a 200ml supply) of Light Blue Forever. The batch code says it was made in April 2021, but i just opened it on Monday and began the oxidation process on the one bottle. I doubt the bottle i opened will expire soon, but idk for sure and i actually like this scent and want it to last. At this point, im actually tempted to take ur advice and get a mini fridge for all of them so they last longer. I have heard Fragrance World made a clone of it however, but idk hiow accurate it is to the real thing. Smh such a shame when great scents get killed off *looks at everyone talking bout Pure Malt and all the other Mugler fragrances when i havent even tried them bc im a fragrance noob*

The way you store your fragrances is going to have a lot of effect on how long they last. Storing a fragrance in a car or a bathroom is a sure fire way to shorten the shelf life. Too many extreme variations in temperature and humidity are not good.
Your own nose is always going to be the best detector of whether your fragrance has expired. If you make it a point to wear a fragrance enough on a consistent basis at the beginning, you’ll know how its supposed to smell, the longevity and projection.
When it’s gone bland, you’ll know it.

I have a question, I’m a 25 year old woman but new to fragrances as I only recently started to learn more (growing up I was used to fragrance free everything because my mom is super sensitive to strong smells, especially perfumes). So based on what you’ve said in this video, would it be wise to aim for only buying travel size bottles if I don’t wear fragrance often (only on occasion)? Then it wouldn’t be as much of an issue financially if or when they eventually go bad. I also only wear maybe 1 or 2 sprays when I do use it. I’d say average 2 or 3 times a month. I also don’t hold much importance to seeing the full size bottle on a shelf or anything like that.

Like all good things, fragrances also have an expiration date. Most of them can last for about 3 to 5 years from their manufacturing date. But, hey, let's be real, the shelf life can vary depending on the specific ingredients and formula.
So, here's the deal - over time, the chemicals in a fragrance can start to break down, which can affect its scent and performance. And, if you expose your perfume to heat, light, or air, it can speed up this breakdown process. To avoid this, keep your perfume in a cool, dark place, and make sure the cap is tightly sealed when you're not using it.
Now, don't freak out if your perfume has passed its expiration date. It doesn't necessarily mean it's gone bad, but it might not smell as strong or as true to its original scent. In some cases, it could even smell funky. So, always check the scent and appearance of your perfume before you use it, especially if it's been stored for a while.

Speaking on the oxidation of the fragrance after a good portion is removed from the bottom. What if to remedy this situation? You use decants or a little portable sprayers. You fill them up completely full so there's less oxygen. I wonder if that would make it last onger .
