Stop Wearing Fragrance Wrong (How To Apply Cologne The Right Way)

  • Most guys are applying cologne incorrectly. Here's the deal: if you're spraying a $250 fragrance into the air and walking through the mist, you may as well be pouring it down the drain. The same goes for you guys who spray it on their wrists and then rub them together. The fact is, most guys aren't taught the best method of applying fragrance. They fall into bad habits and waste their hard-earned money as a result.

Applying perfume on lotion is not ideal. The alcohol in the perfume ends up breaking down the lotion.
It should be down the other around. Apply the perfume let it settle then apply the lotion. This locks in the perfume longer on the body

It's so refreshing to hear a CZcamsr say less is more. It seems most fragrance aficionados are so deep into their special interest, they want to push their exotic and sometimes difficult scents onto everyone around them. But applying lightly is just so much more classy. If you respect people around you, it will be so much easier to earn their respect for you.

This is just sum overthinkers like to hear, in reality it depends on the fragrance, if you're wearing polo red or nautical voyage you can literally spray it 8-12 times on you and that wouldn't be excessive, if you're wearingg sum like black afgano or mancera instant crush then obviously that's crazy, 2-4 sprays is 100% sufficient so yea it all depends on what you're about to use.

I used to only wear fragrances during special occasions but then I was talking to my friend one day and estate sales randomly came up. She said it was kind of sad to think about, but that she knows so many people who get really nice, high end fragrances from them. After that she decided to wear something from her collection almost everyday because you never know how long you'll get to enjoy something like that. I agreed with that sentiment and I also started wearing mine everyday, especially my favorites. Like Antonio, I enjoy them and they put me in a good mood, so why not :)

I appreciate your info. However, having been trained by the various parfumeries, we’ve been taught that fragrances also interact differently with body chemistry and most companies highly encourage that fragrances should be used on the body rather than on the clothes- it’s kinda like just spraying the fragrance on an already used blotter card. Specifically because laundry detergents also have their own scents (which can counteract with the scent you use).

What I was taught. Clean fresh scents for networking, business, or casual outings. Spray on the wrist. For dates, or romantic outing, apply on the chest and neck, usually near the jaw or ear area. Now for me personally, I like to spray a cotton ball and lightly dab to apply scents, no smearing. Keep it light, if you are applying a scent you want people to notice but you don't want to smell like you bathed in it.

Great video! I like your style, Antonio.
I’m relatively new to men’s fragrances. I’m old school at 69 years old and have been a Drakkar Noir man for decades. They used to sell a face balm that I loved but stopped about 5-7 years ago. Between these two products, that was my signature scent full stop. Then, about a year ago, I got a bug up my butt to explore fragrances and discovered a whole new world in the realm of fragrances that needed to be explored and taken seriously, so here I am. I have a 73-year-old neighbor who loves wearing perfume, and there is one that she wears that drives me nuts, I want to inhale her each time I see her. Her approach is akin to Curly Fragrance because I know when she is home or has just walked by my vicinity; I just love the way she smells.
Antonio, your advice is solid, honest, tested, sophisticated, and real, and it is clear that you know your stuff, and that you are dedicated to the proposition of men looking and feeling their best - bravo!
Having seen a ton of videos on male grooming in general, I now have consolidated my fragrance and grooming gurus down to three: You, Antonio, Demi Rawling, and your friend, Curly Fragrance who is a hoot, what a sassy babe she is! You three are now my go-to on male grooming especially on the subject of fragrance.
At the advice of Demi, I recently bought L’ Homme Prada, 100ml, and with the first spray out of the box, instantly fell in love with it; it evoked precisely everything Demi described about this fragrance. Although I’m 69, I’m currently still working part-time, hence, I chose this one because it is an “office fragrance”. Next, I will be buying her recommended seasonal fragrances. The Prada fragrance is just a wonderful, bright, clean, floral, cheerful, and sexy fragrance… just as Demi described.
Thanks to you all for introducing me and my nose to the wonderful world of scents!
    😊

Some clarifications on naming conventions, because I noticed a few possible misinterpretations a person can make that weren't expanded upon in the video.
    Eau Fraiche: 1-3%
    Aftershave/Splash- 2-4%
    EDC: Eau De Cologne- 2-4%
    EDT: Eau De Toilette- 5-15%
    EDP: Eau De Parfum- 15-20%
Extrait: Extrait de Parfum - 20-40+%
Most of what was said is spot on, however, a fragrance that says Eau Fraiche in the name isn't always Fraiche concentration. Not saying he said this, but it wasn't further explained. It can be the naming convention of a particular fragrance. For example, Issey Miyake Eau Fraiche, or Versace Man Eau Fraiche, or Hermes Tres Eau Fraiche. None of them are Eau Fraiche concentration, they're EDT to EDP. It just means a fresher version. You have to look at the concentration and not make a decision based on the name of the fragrance. You might be missing out on some great fragrances that last a long time because you've mistakenly assumed that they're of a lower concentration.
Lastly, regarding extrait de parfum as this one always confuses people thanks to companies who market perfumes as "Le parfum" or "parfum" because they know people will think it's stronger. YSL's le parfum appears to be shown as an example of an Extrait, or pure parfum (perhaps not on purpose), but it is not. It's an Eau De Parfum, not Extrait De Parfum. Just like JPG's Le Male Le Parfum, Sauvage Parfum, Eros Parfum, Bleu De Chanel Parfum, etc etc. All of these are Eau de Parfum and not Extrait de Parfum. There's a ton of frags with this name attached to it that aren't extraits. Some are even EDTs. You get the idea. They're just naming conventions made to trick you into thinking they last longer. It's pretty rare to find an extrait strength perfume from a designer house as that's often niche house territory, so don't be confused by the "parfum" name the designer brand adds. Nasomattos 30ML of Pardon, for example, is a true Extrait de Parfum from a niche house. (Highly recommended ultra masculine frag btw)
Bonus tip: As an alternative to the neck, right above your collarbones under your shirt is one of the best locations to spray as they're high heat locations because they're right by the subclavian arteries, and unlike the neck, is hidden from light, so they will pump out your fragrance harder, while also lasting longer. Fragrances when exposed to sunlight dissipate and breakdown quicker. (also why it's best to store fragrances in a dark location, or at least away from sunlight. Artificial is fine. UV is the issue.)
Hopefully this helped anyone new to fragrances. Cheers!

Does spray distance of atomizer from skin affect projection of fragrance?
Most of the fragrances in my collection are dense, EDP’s, Parfums or Middle Eastern Rose/Oud’s which don’t seem to project well on my oily skin?! How can I apply dense or higher fragrance concentrations with better performance?
Cooler areas such as the wrist, seem to hamper fragrance development into the base notes. Applying to my neck (warmer?!) gives better fragrance progression, unless I become noseblind!

Thank you for this video. Many of these thoughts and suggestions hadn’t crossed my mind. I have two of my own that may be helpful too. The small cloth swatches that many people discard, I pin them to the back side of my tie and apply my cologne there. Easy to change out fragrances , and minimal chance to discolor my clothing. I also found that this has the added affect of presenting anew when I open my jacket to sit, or when standing up and buttoning my jacket at meetings.

yeah dont listen to this bozo, dude.
ONE spritz in the air and walking into it right after a shower is by far the best way to go about it.
dont know why the clown claims the cologne will end up on the floor you can literally feel the entire cloud hit you torso and the bathroom floor wont become slick with cologne puddles lmfao
none of that rubbing and sure as hell no multiple sprays (my god).
just one spray. theres a reson why the bottle comes with its particular spray mechanism. use it.
and another thing. DONT buy a cologne just because someone else likes it. buy a mid range priced scent that YOU like cause if you apply it properly (see above) youll be smelling it sublty all day long so you might as well like it.
ive had the expensive scents and theyre no better or worse in quality or longevity than midrangers so save your money.
also try to stay away from perfumed soaps and detergents. not only do they mess up your cologne's scent but those perfumes also sometimes destroy your skin and clothing.

I remember I used to use The Nightmare Before Christmas Bone Daddy cologne, just a light spritzing, combined with a single spray of Playboy's Miami (I'm pretty sure, the bunny was orange back around 2010) body spray. Some of my female friends were a bit direct on complimenting the scent combination. It's amazing how even cheaper fragrances can create something impressive depending on how they work with your body.
One thing I also remember, though, was after using a Neutrogena moisturizer, I was in a rush and sprayed on the cologne before it had time to dry. It caused an adverse reaction, giving me light chemical burns and rough, scaly skin on my neck for about a week until it healed.

Have always had many fragrances for different reasons and events. One thing I learned after decades of dating is listen to comments made by your dates and friends. Women in all kinds of situations made comments for instance powder scented colognes seem to have negative comments from women at least in my case or they also had allergy or reactions to them by being close. Sneezing eyes burn etc. And would politely let me know that particular scent wasn't for me they would say and bothered them a little. So I remembered that and usually discarded it.
Then others would comment more positively about leather and woods style scents.
Seems like though I enjoy many scents to use for different days and nights that many men no longer use any scent. And sometimes men with me will comment somewhat negatively or sarcastically about me wearing a cologne or scent.
But regardless I still have a daily routine after every shower to decide what I will wear that day and do so.
But women most definetly react and do appreciate a great scent. Even my masseuse at the gym from Costa Rica really appreciates a scent and considers it a show of real class and style.
    Good site.
