Arri 235 Test - Vision 2 50D

  • I recently purchased an Arri 235 from the nice folks at Visual Products. I don't have any 35mm cine lenses yet. The only thing I could come up with was a borrowed 80mm Arri Compact Prime. I also don't have an appropriate cine tripod, so I had to shoot this with an inadequate monopod (first two shots) and handheld. The combination of no tripod and a relatively long lens yielded some pretty unstable shots. Also, the lens had very little DOF at the needed f-stop, so proper focus was critical -- and I blew that several times.
So my first 35mm cine film turned out a little rough...
Processing by Fotokem. Transfer by Spectra.

Beyond beautiful. How much did the film processing cost?

Really great-looking footage, especially for shooting 50D under less-than-stellar light conditions. An inexpensive work-around for your lack of lenses might be to go with an M42-to-PL adapter, opening the door to a vast selection of high-quality Pentax glass that can often be had for under a hundred bucks. Obviously, the vintage stuff isn't going to be in the Arri Compact Prime league, but what they lack in resolving power, they often make up for in character. The only drawback I've run into is that mirror clearance can get a little hairy on some of the deeper set M42s, so you definitely have to watch that.
Best of luck with the 35mm, you're off to a great start!
P.S. Coincidentally, your negative was in good company. The team at Fotokem are currently handling the processing chores for a galaxy far, far away...

that's so beautiful! the film cine look is so amazing!, do you needed other acessories to shoot, or you only used the arri, the lens and the kodak film? :)

Beautiful! How much did you pay for the 235, if I may ask? I'm looking for a 416 myself.
