Thin a iron it goes 20 feet, thin a wedge around the green it goes 200 yards.
I don't think I've ever related to a comment more in my life
Very true.
Can relate. Thin my tm mg2 58 and it’s like I hit a hybrid.
😂😂👍
100% 🤣
I will have to say that over the last two years my game has gotten all around better and it’s due to the tips from Ricks videos. Keep’em coming!
Same boat!
Same!!!!
Couldn't agree more!
Same
Me too and I've only been watching for 3 months...
I’ve watched CZcams golf tip videos for a few days. Only have 179 swing thoughts when i play now👍
Hahaha my buddy and I were saying the same thing. Pro tip #1 just go swing don’t think
@@DomenicM91 he has 180 now 😂 i stopped watching instructional videos, too many. Just pop on to give a like to the videos so they get more views and help etc
@@aidangriffiths5075 same here. You wouldn’t have more than one real life coach so why would you listen to multiple CZcams coaches?
I hate that. I started shanking a few months ago and started an internet search for golf instruction. Now I am caught between about 3 different swing methods. I wish our brains had a drain valve so you could just get rid of everything and start over.
@@flower2289 best way to do it is dedicate some range time and only use steps from one video at a time and determine which works best for you
Rick,
Even as a scratch golfer, when I'm in a bit of a slump I come to your videos for advice, and almost 100% of the time your videos help me realize what I've been doing wrong, saving me money from having to go get a lesson. Thank you for these videos, it really helps golfers of all skill levels!
Made my first par today thanks to you Rick! Thank you!
What I like is the simplicity and style of your tutorials. NOT overly complicated and filling your head with all sorts of things to remember. Well done and many thanks. Phil
This video explains how to fix your iron shots better than anything else I've ever seen. I literally went out and played an hour after watching this and had "65L" written on my hand for 65% weight on my left foot. I hit my irons better than I have ever hit them before. Even spun multiple shots back on the green using my 6 and 7 irons!!
Thanks Rick for all the great tips. I went from golfing a 115 to 90s in about two months.
What is your better game, driving, irons or putter?
Shit..... by those gains you should be on the tour by now......
@@chriskoshinski you can improve very fast going from 100s to 90s maybe even high 80s. It takes years worth of practice after that point to get anywhere close to pga level
Quit now while you’re ahead. It will only get worse. Trust me.
I’m in the same boat. Went from 120’s to mid 90’s since June. I played 50+ rounds & until I watched ricks videos I couldn’t hit irons & my driving was awful.
I’ve used this 3rd tip so much. And it helps tremendously. It feels like I’m lowering the loft but I get such great strikes and really good loft on the ball. It’s honestly I think the best tip for striking irons. Love these videos. Went from hitting over 100 to breaking 90 multiple times this year using a lot of your tips you share!
Rick and Alex have helped my game so much. Finally breaking 95 (from 120ish) thanks these two. We really appreciate your help! Also love your on course shot by shot. Really helps our course management. Thank you again 🙏
I just started playing this week and your videos have helped so much. Before I go the range I watch some of your instructional videos based on what I was doing the day before and I almost feel like I finally have a swing I can work with. Absolute class.
Just played golf yesterday and made those 3 mistakes. Rick is an Omnipresent coach it’s official
I absolutely love that Rick adds text overlays and whatnot to explain what he is trying to teach. Absolutely fantastic! Thanks.
Hi Rick, I actually just started playing last year and all golf knowledge that I know is because of your videos and tutorials. i love this tip to stricking irons pure. last year i started with +35 to +45. now, 2022, I'm down to +28 to +30. I'm getting better and my goal this first half of the year is to always break 100s. I'm a fan and now an avid golfer because of you. Keep up the good work. I hope you can visit here in the Bay area California.
Thank you! Been really struggling with irons lately and have watched your long iron vids from a few years ago. Cool to see a new one!
Step 1: Swing Away
Step 2: Hit the ball
Step 3: Pray it goes straight
Step 4: yell four!
Amen! Lol
I’ve gotten a lot better at my golf game due to your videos, Rick. I have a long way to go...especially in consistency...but my confidence is a lot higher than what it used to be. My perfect game is not losing a ball during a round anymore.
Thank you Rick. This is why you have so many subscribers. Love your content and passion for Golf. I know it’s a grind but it is much appreciated.
Thank you so much, took your advice to the range along with your grip advice. Got rid of my slice and hitting my irons and driver pure. Went from shooting 47 to 39 in a few rounds. Great vids and please keep on with your awesome tips👌💪
"Typically doesn't go very far" ahh Rick mate I'll have to send you a video of me thinning a 9 iron over 200 yards.
Would you like a medal? Or a sticker?
@@ND-os3ls Damn bro, sorry your mom didn't hold you enough as a child.
@@RichieMaccas Lol my dude took that seriously😂
all the time 🤣
DUDE me all the time I’ll be in perfect 9 range thing it and it gets smoked into the woods behind the green
This is perfect instruction. I think you have hit the 3 most important pieces of advice and the great news is that they are all easy to address (pardon the pun) for any golfer who is willing to listen and practice. I would also include some other common mistakes that affect the outcome of iron striking: 1. Grip: Many golfers, even those who have been shown a 'correct' grip, end up with too weak a grip, it's an easy thing to fall in to, so make sure your grip is strong enough. That's mostly to do with the left hand (or right if you're left handed.) Someone standing directly opposite you should be able to see the manufacturers logo on your glove facing them. A weak grip can see you pulling loads of shots, even if you are doing everything else correctly. 2. Standing too far away from the ball. This is so common. If you feel that your weight is forward on your feet at address then you're standing too far from the ball. Your hands should be pretty much directly below your chin: Don't lean to get to the ball, bend your knees. Your back should be as upright as is comfortably possible. A good test here is that it should be possible to make your regular swing without your upper right arm (or left for left handers) losing contact with your chest. You can practice this by putting a towel under your right (or even both) arms and keeping it there through the swing 3. Plane of your swing: The solution to this is contained in number two. Lose the tendency to swing outside-in by keeping your upper arms 'glued' to your chest through the backswing and downswing so that they only release after impact 4. Don't forget to turn your hips. Nobody can hit a good golf shot without turning away and back through. You can think of the plane of your swing as a tilted disk around your belt buckle pointed towards the ground. It's not up and down, it's around and around, like you're throwing a ball. But the 'around and around' has nothing to do with anything that you're doing with your arms, it's all naturally facilitated by your body turn 5. Concentration. As your swing becomes honed and just 'second nature', you are going to get away with lapses in concentration more often but I think that this is the area of the game that is most neglected in golf coaching generally. I'm not suggesting that we all have to be zoned in like meditating Buddhists, when we are out on the course. That would remove much of the fun for most of us. But all good golfers have a method to ensure that they are concentrating at the important moments. Mine is just a little pause at address when I make sure I am happy with everything. If I am not, I will step away and start again. This takes just a fraction of a second but makes a huge difference ... And it will make you a faster player, not a slower one. Slow players are those who hit lots of bad shots or fanny about to no particular purpose. We can all chose our own 'concentration check method' but we should all have one.
Thanx Rick for all the videos!!
It has really helped. My game keeps improving each week.
Keep on doing what you and your team are doing. I am sure I am not the only one that your content has helped to improve.
Thanks for all the videos. I had a summer of improvements thanks to your tips. I even broke into the single digit handicap briefly. I love my 6 iron but I have to make a concerted effort to preset my shaft with my 5 iron for a GIR shot. If it is just to advance the ball, I can execute your three steps but for whatever reason on a par 3 or GIR shot with my 5 iron, I can lose my tempo and thin it right. Ouch! The 3 steps to better ball striking and the video on practice range strategy of warm up, technique, target golf and finally, competition + fun will correct my flaw. Bring on January and hopefully less COVID because I hope to be a better student by going to Hilton Head in January to prepare for next summer and make myself proud.
Keep those tips coming and thanks to all those who emphasize those Shiels gems in their comments that help us better ourselves!
PS. Rick, the walking around the UK with the golf bag was a great distraction during COVID's pinnacle of darkness!!! Cheers!
2:14 Guy in the back casually hits it at the exact same time as Rick.
I saw that too
Thanks now I’ve watched this 1400 times and I can’t stop I hope you’re happy
Glitch in the matrix
Ha
hes just getting a free lesson basically aha 🤣
I was just at the driving range thinning all my irons and I couldn’t stop… this is perfect timing
Big brother is watching..
As a high handicap player, I find the range is useful for warming up.
Gosh Rick, you make it look so easy. What I like about your videos is that you know what it is that you want to teach, and you get right to it and show it as simply as possible. I watch you, and it makes me confident that I can do what you say. Well, only the next round of golf will prove whether or not I can.
Absolutely love your coaching videos!
So glad I subscribed to your channel, thanks and cheers Rick!!
Please bring back break 75 🙏🙏🙏
Rick talking about when you thin an iron shot “Typically doesn’t go very far”…I beg to differ from personal experience
*inserts video of thinning SW from 60yd as it goes 60yd past hole*
@@Real28 we all know this pain…
Lmao
I agree 🤣
amen to that. I have done this and launched the fucker about 60+ yards further than I wanted to go
Been watching in Australia for years and love it Rick. Would love to see a golf wardrobe tour soon please! Show us all that stash you have and if you have any plans to sign another clothing deal.
Great teaching that have helped me a lot. Thank you
I need wwwaaaaayyyyyyyyy more than 3 ways to hit my irons better!
Tom saguto taught me
Rich shields the online golf legend has literally takin like 15-20 strokes off my game…. Helped me with hitting driver and higher irons way better than I could of learned by myself. Legendary. Bless you Rick
you must have been a 69 handicapper'
Love your videos man everything is very well explained and I can instantly see a difference when I’m out on the range! Thanks for help!
Great tips! As someone who struggles with thinning my irons, I found the advice on ball position and weight distribution particularly helpful. And I never realized the importance of maintaining the correct shaft angle at impact. Thanks for breaking it down in such a clear and concise manner. Can't wait to put these tips into practice on the course! ⛳👍
I miss the break 75 series
Implemented these tips tonight at my Topgolf league Rick thank you I already see an improvement! Balls are straighter, contact is better, and it feels a lot better thank you! I play 9 tomorrow hopefully it applies there to
Did it apply wel to your game
Great advice video
I’ve watched just about all of Rick Shiels instruction videos and learned a lot and definitely getting more pars.
The best tutorial on using the Irons I've ever seen! By far! I'm almost 79 and have taken a good number of hands-on lessons and watched videos of "TopGolf Instructors", but you provide the best explanation & demonstration of all. Too many "Instructors" talk throughout the lesson instead of pointing out one's swing flaws and actually demonstrating the correct swing. You have become my "Go-To" instructor! Well done indeed!
Notification gang, already know it's gonna be good
This video literally changed my entire golf game. I went from shooting high 50’s to now hitting 40’s
Thanks a million Rick, been having lot problems with thinning the ball ,these exercises really helped 👍
Not hard to see why you are the best CZcams Golf tutor available. I.e. nice and clear helpful, that work, instructions. Thanks again.
Are you still an ambassador for garmin? If so can you review the r10 launch monitor that’s been announced. I need to know if it’s worth getting. Looks good for the price but is it accurate? Thanks.
I love how he just said “I’m at St Andrews right now” like it’s no big deal 😂
Came to comments to say this 🤣
🤔🏌️♀️😂
Hes a big deal now
You couldn't be at St Andrews and not say so though could you! I'd be all over that, I'd mention it in every sentence 🤣
Rick! Relatively new to your channel and just getting back into golf this year...and thanks to your videos I'm breaking 100 and getting closer to 90 each round, which is where I wanna be as a 28 handicap. Thanks and keep up the excellent work 😁
Thanks for this video! I just finally started playing clubs that are correct for my game, and my iron striking has TANKED. Can't wait to give these tips another refresher today.
I love how in some videos Rick says it will help to know how far you hit each club but I don’t know what it feels like to hit a good iron shot 😭
I hear you. I am trying to help myself. I have finally started to feel the compression on shots with irons, but only on very short swings by focusing on a nice long takeaway to half way back in the swing and then coming back through. It produces nice strikes for 70 to 110 yard wedger and 9 iron shots. At least it is giving me hope that as I lengthen my swing and figure out how to get in the slot that I can compress the ball. The challenge now is figuring out the 2nd half of the back swing on how not to fall apart to get back down into the slot. Try some shorter shots with focus on takeaway and coming back down through the same path as takeaway. It is crazy how it feels the first time you get a compressed strike that flies out and you hardly swing!
Yes!!!
Perfect timing on this video, I've really been working on my game and your videos have helped a ton (thanks!). I still thin the ball 30% of the time though so these are the tips I need!
Rick, these are easily the best videos I have come across. I am actually seeing step-change improvement in my game after watching, practicing then playing these tips you provide.
I’ve always played my wedges and irons from back heel to front heel according to loft. So wedges off the back heel. 9,8,7 slightly back of middle. 6,5 more middle. 4,3 closer to front heel. Fairway woods front heel, driver off front toe.
It’s just what has worked for me
Nice video
Thanks Rick... from Zimbabwe
So glad to see these tips. Definitely things I need to put into my golf game. Thanks for making great content.
Best tips I’ve seen on how to hit better irons. Great video, thanks for sharing, cheers.
Golfing in an hour thanks for thia
I just hit Driver off the deck Peter Finch style.
How about Phil last week?? He hit one off the deck Thursday and Friday!
I have watched so many tips to help my irons swing but this one is the best by far! Instant improvement! Thanks Rick!
Great video. I am new to golf and by just using your tips on this video especially the lean to left a little I seem to be hitting them better and straighter already. Thanks rick👍
Min woo lee is currently winning the Scottish open Rick played with him just a couple months ago 😳
I'm literally sitting in the parking lot watching this before my round starts. It was meant to be. Thanks Rick 🏌🏾

My favourite part is when I get to the end and go "wow that was really insightful. What were the 3 tips again?"
Same here.
Seriously, well done sir. You have helped my fans immensely.
Have a great year, my friend.
Hey Rick! Been a fan of your channel for a year or 2 now, and in turn recommended you to my Dad, and because if your videos, tips and techniques, he's on the cusp of breaking 90 for the first time! So thank you for all the great work 🤙🏼
I was litterally at the driving range wondering why I couldn't hit them...
instructions not clear: Got my club stuck on the roof
THIS IS THE VIDEO I NEEDED!!! This was a breakthrough for me, thank you so much
Thanks Rick, I’ve been to the range this week and tried to angle shaft forward on setup and it’s helped immensely Thankyou !
I stopped hitting bad iron shots using 1 simple tip:
Only carry a putter.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk
This is the video I needed to see. I think I have been watching to many complex swing fixes and forgot this basic thing. Thanks Rick!
I'm very glad you mentioned pre-setting the shaft in front of the clubhead. I've always done that, but never knew if it was a proper form or not. Awesome vid!
Rick - I'm 3 lessons in and you resonate with me more than anyone online. So good!
100% needed to see this today. Was great off the tee and short game pretty good too. Iron striking let me down massively, some good pointers to work on here. Thanks Rick 👍🏼
Very helpful. Can't wait to try these tips out. Thank you.
Great video and tips Rick! Very helpful. Always have struggled with ball position and weight shift.
Good timing for this video, was just struggling with topping my irons this weekend. Now, just have to remember these tips.
I've been working on my woods and my irons all of a sudden suck, the ball position tip made sooo much sense - I've been hitting so many balls off my left heel that it probably feels centre when the ball is way ahead of where it should be!
Great tips, and as ever, great delivery 👍🏼
This really helped me at the range today, hitting my irons so cleaner. Top work 👍
This sounds great Rick, I’ll try these three things out. You managed to highlight all the bad tendencies that can happen in my swing.
All of these points really do make a huge difference, great advice.
Thanks for the tips! New golfer here this has already improved my 6 and 8 iron shots!!
Best golf teacher, super easy to follow your instructions, thank you.
I was in a little funk with my irons, but I just practiced the first two tips and am back on track. Thank you so much Rick.
Thank you for these videos, Rick. I made more solid iron shots last weekend than I have all year combined. Cheers!
Started golf a few months ago started watching these videos to strike the ball better and it has helped so much my games gotten better loads
great short vid, Rick! Definitely helps me strike the ball better when I put more weight on the forward leg, and the shaft lean!
Just the video I needed after my round yesterday, thanks Rick!
Thanks
this has transformed my golf game.
these 3 tips especially weight forward and keep it there.
Can’t wait to use these tips on the course tomorrow I’ll give an update on my results cheers rick 👍🏼
🙌🏻 Thanks Rick exactly what I needed. Keep sending those tips! 😉
Thank you for that. It was very informative and helpful.
Cheers Rick. Excellent video 👌Really impressed with the graphics you use to make things clear and easy to understand. Have a great day.
Helpful as always Rick! Thanks for the great video - going to the range now to put these tips to good use!
Rick this is probably my fave video you've put out in terms of value added for me. Love the vids mate keep it up!
Thanks so much!! Recovering from injuries an health problems last week couldn't get a ball off ground at range then watched your vid an struck ball much better today awesome content !!
Wow, watched this video this morning, went to the driving range and just crushed it. Balls went straight and long. These tips are worth its weight in gold. Now I made notes on all of them to bring next time to the range. Especially the last tip on setting up the arm and club in the straight line with the grip before the club makes a huge difference for me. Thanks a lot Rick!
He has helped my game a lot. Great simple quick videos.
Ive been watching your videos since i started playing golf at the beginning of the pandemic last year. I am almost consistently shooting at or under 100 in my second year and its all thanks to your vidoes. Any time im golfing with people who have been playing for longer, they wonder why my swing does not look like someone whos only been playing for a year and its all thanks to your vidoes like these. Thank you so much for all tha you do Rick
Awesome video. Especially the ball in stance tip. Would love to see you do a video on the correct distance to have the ball out from your stance, particularly for Driver.
This helped me so much. I watched the video went outside and hit the best 5 shots I’ve ever taken with my irons. Thank you for posting this my friend!
