    In this video I discuss the flight control set up I now have in DCS for flying helicopters which allows for very smooth control inputs and much more precision for hovering, landing in confined landing zones aerial gunnery. All thanks to FFBeast - a full force feedback stick that can be tuned differently for eah module. Today we look at shooting targets with guns and rockets using the UH-1 Huey module for DCS.
    FFBeast will be just as great for flying the Mi-8, AH-64 Apache, OH-58 Kiowa, Bo-105 in DCS World!

    Who ever said there is no force feedback in a real helicopter is clearly not a helicopter pilot.

      That's one of THE first things I learned about flying a real helicopter, feeling the forced feedback on the flight controls.

    I have been really into helos in the last few years. I was using a spring loaded stick for a little while. I ended up cutting the spring and modifying the action to give it some friction. That worked wonders. Wasn't too great for flying fixed wing though, or drones. So, I stuck a megaton of the weakest, lowest tension rubber bands I could find on there. I did six directions, and then I used a band that was stabilizing in multiple directions, and a super loose band to counter balance that. Now, I have buttery smooth movement, no more of the jerky nature of the spring, but there is still a return to center and force to it. For force trimming, I have a small notch in what used to hold the spring in place, and I can position that so it changes the tension on the bands.
    Super cheap, all done with stuff I had around the house, and a $20 joystick. Best flight sim experience I've ever had, including using much higher end gear.
    I don't say this to say, hey, you don't need that FFB fanciness... actually, to the contrary, that feeling in the stick, the friction, the smooth action, YOU WILL NOT GET THAT IN A SPRING LOADED STICK! I had to cut up a joystick and make a sacrifice. My spring loaded stick can now only really do helicopters, and it still has a very dead stick feeling to it. An FFB stick can do whatever you set it up to do. I've seen a few people making FFB shifters for trucksim. The options are limitless. Small GA aircraft, or large military helos, can all be simulated properly with the proper immersion, and all of the correct forces applied. I think that outside of butchering a spring stick, an FFB stick is a must for helo fans.

    Look, I don't want to talk down on the FFBeast, but I can say as a Rhino owner, GET THE RHINO. The software is SO much better and the amount of effects, features, and tunability Walmis put into his software is worth it alone. Also, while the FFBeast does advertise higher torque, trust me, the Rhino has PLENTY. Almost too much in some cases.
    Again, the software alone is the biggest reason I went with the Rhino and I am very... very happy I went this route. The FFBeast software is primitive compared to the VPForce Rhino. For instance, the Rhino can do ETL effects (vital for helicopter flight), g force effects (of course, like all FFB sticks can), gun shake, hydraulic buzz, wind buffeting, bomb/missile release thuds, and much, much more. The software is just much more mature.

    I have the vkb Gladiator plus! I'm very happy with how well it works. My dad is a helicopter pilot (bell 47, 206, a lot of time in the as350, a tiny bit of uh1 time, and now some time in a uh60) and I put him in the huey in vr to see how well he would do...let's just say he has a much better time in the real thing😂 to be fair I also don't have pedals yet so that could've thrown him off.

    The detail on the new models is absolutely wild. The first skin I did for DCS was the original Ka-50, and that thing looked pretty good, even 4 or 5 years ago, given how old the thing was. Then the Mi-24 came out and I made a skin for that thing and it was just wild how much detail there was now. So much more detail, and a correspondingly bigger texture file spread out over more templates.
    And then the ultimate in detail and frustration, the AH-64.That thing literally has the individual bolts and rivets mapped independent of the skin below. It looks great in game, but hunting down every single rivet was incredibly frustrating. Especially when I stupidly picked a 4-tone camo from the Czech Air Force to represent. But at least it came out looking good, in my opinion anyway.

      LOL, you and me both! I pointed that out to Spudknocker in one of his Apache helicopter training videos (online lesson he was giving to one of his patrons). He insisted on continuing to call them rudders (and he claims to be a real airline pilot🤔). I pointed out the fact that aerodynamically, they do not work like rudders AND no rotary wing pilot I've ever met or heard, calls them rudders. They all say Pedals (anti-torque pedals). He was just too darn arrogant to submit 😂

    I don't really see a point in ffb for the huey if all the advantage you get is not having to reset the stick when using forcetrim... but for planes, ww2 especially, i imagine it is awesome!

      @@jchen3615
      But how?
      If all it does is simulate a spring effect, there is no actual feedback from the weight and forces on the helicopter...
      On a plane you can feel the stick getting heavier as you go faster, you can feel when you are about to stall, this is useful feedback at least.

    • @jchen3615
      @jchen3615 Před 2 měsíci

      @@Schmoking but that's exactly it, the advantage on rotorcraft is the more realistic feel of using force trim, which is an absolute gamechanger for consumer level sims. It's an integral part of flying any rotorcraft from what I've seen (working on them and with them and taking controls once in a while, but not a pilot myself)

    • @Schmoking
      @Schmoking Před 2 měsíci

      @@jchen3615
      Right... but then the only advantage you get is not having to centre your flightstick after pressing the force trim button, or am i missing something?
      Force trim still works on a non ffb joystick...
      I don't understand how simply not having to allow you flightstick to centre itself when using it is a "gamechanger"

  • @ComdrStew
    @ComdrStew Před 2 měsíci

    All planes are easier to aim with FFB sticks. Really a joystick with dampers are even easier. Same with rudder pedals with dampers.

    Brunner just updated their ffb base.

  • @AdmiralQuality
    @AdmiralQuality Před 2 měsíci +2

    There is no force feedback in a Huey. There is Force Trim, which lets you set a new spring-center for the stick, but you don't feel meaningful flight forces fed back through the linkages and hydraulics. (And with hydraulics off it apparently takes both pilots all the force they can muster to move the stick.)
    Anyway, yes, FFB works great with DCS choppers as it keeps us from having to do that fake re-center movement after setting the Force Trim position. Force Trim then works as it should.

    • @Mountain_Manu
      @Mountain_Manu Před 2 měsíci

      Not feedback like in a plane, but you'd still feel vibrations (like shooting guns) and other small effects, so stick should not be completely dead apart from force trim

    • @AdmiralQuality
      @AdmiralQuality Před 2 měsíci

      @@Mountain_Manu Would you though? You can hold a minigun in your hands and fire it.
      Anyway, vibration effects are a different thing and hardly need a full FFB rig to achieve. But also far less informative that flight forces (and force trim in the choppers). Like one of those Buttkicker things. I usually disabled the "effects" entirely on my Logitech as I found them unhelpful and only informing me of stuff I already knew. (I can hear and see the guns firing, and know I'm holding the trigger.)

    • @CommandT
      @CommandT  Před 2 měsíci

      Yes, but also it allows for a more “loose” feeling cyclic which is important to get the real feel of flying a helicopter. The springs in regular joysticks are a bit too strong.

    • @AdmiralQuality
      @AdmiralQuality Před 2 měsíci

      @@CommandT Some come with variable springs. I've also taken the spring out completely to fly choppers, but my stick falls over instead of staying where I leave it so that's no good.
      I have a Logitech FFB stick that I used to use. It's broken at the moment (started spontaneously thrashing one night, thought I had an animal trapped in my place, LOL!) but probably just needs a capacitor replaced. Still, it wasn't very accurate around the center so while the FFB was nice, particularly in the choppers, it was a trade-off as it was hard to fly precisely. But just like he demos here, when I switched off Force Trim in the chopper it would go "floppy". Neat! (I forget if it became really stiff when you turned off hydraulics but it should.)
