Magic. I was there. Still got the footy record. We
felt like Burke and Wills driving up from Geelong. Thank goodness dad knew where he was going.

An historic day in the VFL/AFL with the first ever VFL/AFL match at Waverley Park. From Round 3 1970 to Round 22 1999, Waverley Park was an important football ground not just with the VFL/AFL, but with other special events. Plus it hosted the 1991 VFL/AFL Grand Final between Hawthorn & the West Coast Eagles. The 1991 Grand Final at Waverley Park was the only VFL/AFL Grand Final played outside the MCG from the years between 1946 to 2019. Happy memories at Waverley Park.🙂

    HSV-7 footage.
Commentators: Frank "Bluey" Adams & Bill Twomey. (Channel 7's "C" team at the time).
As the least important game of the three they covered, this was replayed at 10.30pm that night, unlike the more important games at 7.00pm.

@@YellowandBlack In it's early days the facilities were much better than the MCG & getting there was no problem if you lived in the eastern/southern suburbs. The problem was getting back home; the govt promised to run tram/light rail there but never did. But it was never built to the original design (capacity 149,000) & the league let it become decrepit so that by the 90s it was a bit of a joke with its b&w video screen etc.

@@YellowandBlack Extraordinary turnaround in the govt mindset since those days. VFL owned the land then built the stadium with all of its own $ & later on the Cain govt stood in the way of any other development. Contrast that to the modern paradigm where state govts fall over themselves to build premium facilities for professional sports competitions who often have a lot of $$ & could put in more $$ to build the facilities on public land.

@@sentimentalbloke185 They continued previous government policy of no trains to Waverley. A suggested line would go from Huntingdale to Lower Ferntree Gully. Apart from the right of way, storage facilities were required, preferably near Waverley. Apart from 20 odd matches at Waverley, the line would not get enough traffic to justify its construction.
