How do I install an Hayward pool light in my above ground pool. It comes with the cutter, can I do it with the liner installed?

What is your reason for not keeping the screws in the return and cutting them through the liner?

You just don't need to. There are only 4 holes, they are big, easy to feel, and the returns are near the top of the pool. Honestly you don't need to leave any screws in at all anywhere...I just have a habit of leaving them in some fixtures like lights and stairs to make the installation of the new gasket and flanges idiot proof. I have done as many as 150 inground liners in one season and after a while you simply lose the ability to remember details from one pool to the next. That is why my system involves doing things like marking each fixture on the deck with duct tape so I can't miss any. You dont need to do that...but I do them in such volume that I actually did need it to ensure I didn't miss anything.

I see. Well I am going to use your technique. Prevents a knife from slipping off the screw and ruining your day.:)

What’s your method for when you try installing a jet / skimmer / stair face plate and it’s stripped out and the screw doesn’t catch?

    • @Swimmingpoolsteve

Bigger screw, or a piece of plastic weed whacker cord into the hole first. It MUST pull tight. Don't settle for a spinner because it will leak for sure. I also fill with silicone and drill two more holes on either side of the stripped one if all else fails.

@@Swimmingpoolsteve Awesome, thank you for your answer. I’ve used both the methods you’ve suggested also, but never the weed whacker length.

Weed whacker cord comes on gauged sizes. If you are a pool pro have a spool of each one so you can try to find the one that works.

could I do this on an above ground pool with water still in it?

Have you ever installed face plate under water?

    • @Swimmingpoolsteve

Yes, definitely. It will often help to keep everything held tightly in place and not move around.
