  • It's Tuesday 6th June, and bad weather causes grey skies, plenty of rain, and a cancelled train. But Geoff & Vicki battle on to find a dead king, Nottingham's trams, and the lights of Skegvegas. Oh, and did we mention the rain too?

Note from the Pronunciation Police: "Ye", as in "Ye Olde Shippe" is correctly pronounced "the". Because until a long time ago the th sound was denoted by Y.

    • @catfish552

5:25 Trivia - the y in Ye was originally a separate character in the alphabet (þ) that eventually dropped out of use. It's form slowly evolved to resemble a y, but it was pronounced like a 'th, so 'ye olde' would have been correctly pronounced as 'the olde'.

Seeing the inn in Nottingham reminded me of a pub in St Albans that I remember was argued to be the oldest in the country (from what I heard there was one other that disputed its claim and I can't remember if it was the one you went to here) called Ye Olde Fighting Cocks down by the Abbey (lovely building that you should visit if you get the chance, Vicki, it's got the 2nd longest nave in the country I think) and Verulamium Park (got some nice remnants of the Roman wall there). Their website says ~793AD but the Telegraph has it as possibly dating back to 973AD (apparently the first licence they have is from the 18th century which is why it's disputed). I think the general idea in the area is that it does date back that long, which doesn't really surprise me given the buildings and institutions that have survived this long in St Albans itself (the oldest school in Hertfordshire, for example - ~948AD). Anyway, I'll stop rambling on about St Albans and pubs now, just thought it was an interesting tidbit!
Great video and series, always love seeing there's a new one out! :-)

There are many "oldest inns in England". Another is the Bingley Arms in Bardsey between Leeds and Wetherby. It claims to date back to 953AD and has real priest holes (from a somewhat later period) up its chimney. www.bingleyarms.com/gallery-1617.html
Unfortunately, it doesn't have a railway running anywhere near it (and I don't think it ever has done), so you're not going to see it on your trip.
