FYI... LumaFusion 3.0 is NOW available on the App Store (as of 7/27/21). Go update your app! :)
Ive literally been waiting for this for 2 years.
Splendid video, Blake. Thanks very much. Both this video and the podcast with Terri Morgan saved.
Thanks for watching/listening!
This is what I needed! I'm super excited for Luma 3.0. I'm still hoping they will add audio-sync in a future update.
Just added my Samsung T7 Shield 4Tb. Your video really explains very easily how to choose the SSD as a source.
I also want to remind the viewers that what makes the iPad Magic Keyboard extra special is the keyboard also has a plug where you can keep the iPad powered.
So I plug the SD into the iPad tablet itself, and my power cord into the Magic Keyboard.
As we know the iPad and iPhone are really power-hungry, but with the Magic Keyboard, the power can be plugged in at the same time as the SSD. So now I don’t have to worry about running out of power, and don’t have to worry about running out of space.
I don’t know if other iPad 3rd party keyboards have the capability, but the Magic Keyboard certainly does.
One of the main reasons I chose LumaFusion was that Apple’s new Final Cut Pro app does not let you edit via an external SSD. So I’m very happy that Luma Fusion is such a great app, and in addition can use an external SSD.
Thank you for the review
really helpful ,thank you for the video.
Spot on Blake.. one thing i stil miss.. vector scopes!
Definitely! Glad they are coming too (although a bit later on I’m told).
I been waiting and waiting for this feature for so long I forgot all about it. I’ll be happy to editing on my iPad Pro.
Merci beaucoup !
I like LumaFusion a lot. Is really intuitive. Works fine with ssd-drives without login protection. Does not work with a Sandisk drive with software protection.
Sandisk Extreme Pro doesn’t work with my iPad Pro since the drive protection was activated. Peter
Yeah, 3-rd version ... Amazing !!!
I just got the iPad Pro with the M1 processor. It works on Lumafusion. Saves me the headache of storage, so there, get away with buying 128 GB of storage and save mad money.
goon one..much needed update.. btw, I am thinking about switching to m1 macbook pro but not just yet.. so thinking about getting an ipad first. if it is not too much to ask can you check whether or not the ipad pro can handle sony a7siii files at full res??
I’ll be interested to try this on my iPad Air 4
Outstanding presentation my friend !
Thanks for doing this :)
EDIT : I wasn’t aware LF actually recommended a particular SSD . I just bought a 1TB sandisk extreme pro SSD . I’m hoping it’s headache free and works like the T7 .
Have seen some use those no problem. Thanks for watching!
Does thus work with Powerdirector?
No idea. :)
Nice & Thanks :)
This is a game changer
WOW! I haven't used LF much, but will sure look at it now that my new iPad M1 is on its way. Thanks, Blake ... I think ... I learn a lot with every on of your videos, but, I then often spend a lot more than I had planned! :0)
Good deal, interested to hear how that M1 iPad performs!
I just bought the t7 for my iPad but I can’t see where the remaining storage of the ssd? Where do you find it?
It works great with a T7 also. I have only one problem that I haven’t solved yet. When I have something plugged into usb-c port I do not get any sound out of my IPad Pro 2020, any suggestion would help me.
Is that using LumaFusion only or with all apps? Haven’t encountered that one.
Thank you for sharing! What happens if you open a project containing videos from a drive while the drive is disconnected and then reconnect?
There will be missing media at first, then will relink.
@@iphoneographers Thanks!
How did you become tester for beta version?
I run a CZcams channel about mobile filmmaking. :)
So what happens when you edit with some clips natively on the iPad and some clips on the SSd?
Nothing until you unplug the drive. :) It works the same and if the drive isn’t connected it just shows the media as missing.
where to get 3.0 ?
App Store date TBA when it’s released publicly
Thanks for great video, i am planning to get ipad air m1 but with storage 128gb and getting ssd portable like samsung T5 with 1 gb storage.. I’m planning to use it for editing youtube video (max 10 minutes) on luma fusion, what do you think about 128gb storage? Is it enough to handle/process the editing? And i planning dump and edit all the footage on ssd? Or do you have other advice?
I always recommend getting as much internal storage as you can. 128 is on the low side IMO. If you can do 256 that’s what I would recommend (or higher) even using an external drive. It’s always amazing how quickly stuff fills up with apps or photos, videos etc. that are on your device. You can keep your video editing media on your external drive of course, at least mostly (some stuff will be imported depending on what you’re doing).
Hello Sir
This video helped me a lot as I just ordered a 256gb iPad pro and was wondering for days if I should return it and get a bigger storage one. Given the fact that I only used 90 gb (without Luma fusion) in the last 2 years. Do you think that I could get away with the 256gb by editing from the ssd? I am new to the video editing by any means. Thanks a lot for your help!
Always get as much storage as you can afford, so if you can go bigger. But, in my experience 256GB has worked out fine (that’s what the iPad in this video has) and now with external SSD editing it will be even better. Really just depends on how much video you work with and need to store (or delete from the iPad after editing). Thanks for watching!
@@iphoneographers thanks for replying so quickly! I could afford a bigger storage if I give up the possibility to update my 2015 MBP and go all in on my iPad Pro, but that doesn’t seem like a reasonable choice as I would probably need a traditional laptop for programming. Plus I’m a beginner of the beginners for video editing. So a good external ssd might be my perfect solution. Anyways thank you for sharing this insider information, meant a lot to me.
what cable did you use to connect the ipad and ssd?
USB-C
Hey Blake, great video! I have a 2017 IPad Pro (64Gb) which has a Lightning connector. Is it possible to add an external SSD, since it’s not USB-C? The Apple guy at Best Buy, told me a work around would be an “Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter.” Any clue if that would work? I’ve also heard Luma Fusion doesn’t support these types of work arounds. Meaning, that adapter wouldn’t work. Any clue? Thanks so much!
Yes you can connect one using an adapter, however, and this is important - you have to power it either by a wall plug or a USB battery. This video covers that… czcams.com/video/8iHc1mc5SJE/video.html.
LumaFusion will see the drive, however, you can’t edit from it using Lighting - you can copy or import files though.
Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the help and the link!
Does this also work with an iPad Air 2020 or is this an exclusive “pro” feature. My 2017 iPad Pro 10,5” is getting battery issues and random software faults. Apart from that.... It is only 64GB. Still works “okay” for light work like Lightroom and is still perfect for CZcams or Spotify.
It works with any USB-C iPad, doesn’t have to be Pro.
Can you also do the same on the iPad Air 4?
Yes
Nice!! Got a lumafusion or video editing course to recommend?
Hey! I know you.....
@@ELJefeReviews 🙌🏽
I’d check out Skillshare. Or Udemy has some too. I have a color grading LumaFusion course but not for general editing.
Don't you need to connect to a hub/adapter, so you can power the ipad and the SSD drive simultaneously, while working on LumaFusion?
Can please make a video on iPad air 4 showing lumafusion 3.0 video editing on external ssd. If possible to use external ssd in lumafusion video editing on iPad Air 4 like we can do in iPad Pro m1???
Don’t have an iPad Air, but if your device has USB-C then it is compatible for SSD editing according to LumaFusion.
hello friend excellent posts. can you help me i have an ups pro and i bought an add t7 samsung disk but my ipad doesn't read it what can i do??
Is your iPad USB-C or Thunderbolt? If not, you need an adapter to connect the drive with a power supply… amzn.to/3MPxihj
Work with new ipad air?
Not known yet but guessing yes if it’s a USB-C version, although performance may not be as good.
Blake: What would be the best way to transfer files from iPhone 11 pro to an iPad 6 to use with lumafusion? I plan on upgrading to the newest iPad soon so I can you an external drive like Samsung. Right now I am just using Airdrop but that obviously takes too long. Love the videos and your site. Thanks!
Airdrop is what I would typically recommend or you could use the iCloud photo sync that adds your media to all your devices. Another option could be Dropbox or Google Drive. But Airdrop is possibly the fastest. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching.
@@iphoneographers thanks. I also added my NAS cloud. Not sure why I didn’t do " that before. Now I have a lot of flexibility. -
Had the same issue. Got an older iPad with Lightning and new M1. To transfer large video files from iPhone (5-6 Gb) Airdrop Is not an option. SOLVED: Lightning card reader adapter with an SD card formatted to exFAT. Bingo! Transferring large files on the go from iPhone to (any) iPad (both lightning) is brilliant! No need to wait for cloud synching in the field.
Excuse me , would this work with an iPad 9th gen which only has a lightning port( at a slower speed )? A quick reply would be much appreciated, thanks in advance .
Have a some doubt cause ordered 64gb ipad 9th gen
Some of it, yes. Mainly audio. Just need a different hub or interface to connect accessories.
Hello my friend , I follow almost every video you upload. I have an iphone 12
pro max, and I use the Filmic pro app what i think is amazing. I am a
newbie, and I don't have experience, but i'm plenty full of illusion,.
Last weekend i decided to film at night, not so late, walking by the
streets and filming the buildings, bars, and all thouse areas where the
young people use to go for having fun. But when I got home I saw that
almost all my videos had noise and it was not so late, just after the
sunshine and not night close. Could you please please make a video or
suggest what configuration we should use in those situations where we
only use the artificial night light and no add ons?? I would really
appreciate. Lots of thanks my friend! I feel so frustrated.
Sure, I’ve touched on that subject here & there in many videos, but I will look at making a dedicated one. The main thing to do is manually set the ISO in Filmic Pro and keep it as low as possible. Ideally under 100 (150 to 200 tops). Otherwise you’ll get lots of noise shooting high ISO. Give that a try. Thanks for watching!
@@iphoneographers Thanks for your quick response, i will be expecting one dedicated video to low ilght situations, meanwhile i'll keep on trying!
Since it is plugged right to the ssd you cannot charge the iPad. Can the iPad be plugged to a hub and therefore charge while also be plugged to ssd and not affect performance?
Yes, for example, the Magic keyboard has a USB-C charging port.
It would be great to record to SSD. But i guess the bandwith of lightning is to low to allow that on iphones. So we have to wait (forever) for an iPhone with Usb-C
You're in the same boat as me. In fact, recording to an SSD through USB-C would (I think) open up lossless ProRaw 4k60 shooting. For a mobile filmmaker, this would be the dream setup!
Yeah won’t happen via lightning for sure, maybe USB-C in the future or of course thunderbolt. It would be great though to be able to record like that out to a Atomos ninja.
EU legislation demands iPhones to have USB-C in near future.
I understand importing raw footage is tedious especially with Lightning. But how did you get your raw footage to the Samsung T5?
You can connect it to your iPhone if you’re bringing in that type of footage or just to your computer and copy across, which is (I think) what I did here.
ExFAT? Or format to NTFS?
ExFAT mostly or Mac Journaled
Can I do this on an older iPad pro? Which SSD should I get? Is the app free?
If it’s USB-C it should work. Check the video description for other details.
does this work with ipad air 4?
Yes. Any USB-C or Thunderbolt iPad.
Where could we get this beta ?
You have to be part of the Lumafusion beta program it’s not a public beta.
So its entirely possible to film a video on an iphone 15 pro, have said clips save to an SSD automatically, plug that same ssd into an ipad with USB C, edit the video off the SSD and then post it to social media. All u need is the phone, an ipad witb USB C and an external drive? Please correct me if I'm wrong and recommend which ipad(s) would be suitable for this workflow
That’s correct. Any iPad with USB-C or Thunderbolt will work. 👍🏻
would this work with the iPad 9th gen since it has a lightning port and I did watch your video on how to do it but at that time it was only connecting it to the iPad but can you check if it works like editing on the ssd instead of copying it to the iPad as that's what I heard in comments of that video and btw would editing on a sd card be possible with apples lightning to sd card adapter btw I mean editing on it instead of copying to internal storage and would love a fast reply
You have to have a USB-C to edit off an SSD
@@iphoneographers so even if i power with with power from a power outlet and it shows in file manager I can’t edit on the ssd?
@anyplacia Yeah, not with Lightning
Can this work with a network drive instead if a USB?
It’ll connect to pretty much any drive as long as it’s powered, which a network drive would be - but It’ll need a USB-C connection (or Thunderbolt if on the M1 iPad Pro). I’ve connected to older traditional spinning hard drives before.
sir, is it possible in ipad 9th generation ? Please Replay
Yes as long as it has a USB-C or Thunderbolt connection.
Can i use ipad air the new one?
That’s a question I’ve gotten a few times and since I don’t have one I’m not sure, but my **guess** is it might since it’s USB-C. I’m going to do some research and will include that info in a follow up once the app is out of Beta.
It is work on ipad air 5? Tx before
If that has a USB-C then yes.
@@iphoneographers tx so much
PRORES?!! 🤤 I really hope so
ProRes proxy editing. 💯%
@@iphoneographers I can't wait. I've just had to go back to the laptop to work with prores footage. Presently, the hot air exhaust is cooking my thighs. 🥵
is this not only for the new M1 ipad pros from 2021?
Any iPad Pro with USB-C or Thunderbolt
@@iphoneographers this is ABSOLUTELY amazing!!!! incredible news then
I have my Samsung t5 password protected when I use my computer I can unlock it but when I use my iPad Pro Is read only. Is there a way to unlock it from the iPad?
Don’t use mine that way so not sure.
Whenever I disconnect my external drive, then I cant play my projects anymore. :(
Correct! Your media is on that drive. If you want to go w/o it just copy the files to the iPad’s internal storage.
I don’t think any professional editors will be using this. I have encountered so many connection issues when trying to use the Samsung T5 with my iPad Pro that it has be contemplating just trading in the iPad and getting a Mac. The frustration is just not worth it at this point.
Have had zero issues and pro editors absolutely use this everyday. Are you using LumaFusion? You can now edit ProRes too. Works great. LumaFusion actually just won Apple’s coveted “Best App of the Year” award yesterday. Now I don’t think it’s a laptop replacement yet as I use both, but it’s a great option that’s incredibly portable.
@@iphoneographers Yeah I have been using LumaFusion. I was really excited to hear that ProRes was supported more too. Had me thinking about picking up the bmpcc 6k but I’ve just had too many issues with the iPad corrupting my files which I just can’t afford to happen. I’ve seen forums where other people have the same issue so I know it’s not just me. I’ve tried editing directly off the SSD and I’ve also tried moving files from an SD card to the iPad and then to the SSD and something happens in the transfer of those that corrupts my videos. I really like the idea of using my iPad to edit longer videos but very discouraged that I can’t seem to get it to work. I’ve even tried deleting and reinstalling LumaFusion but it still has trouble maintaining a solid stable connection to the SSD when editing.
Does not necessarily iPad Pro only.
Because of USB-C speed vs. Lightning speed it only makes sense on iPad Pro or iPad Air 4 (if supported)
Have to have the fast throughput of the port.
I been doing this since last year
You have been editing on external drive or you have been importing from drive INTO LumaFusion?
@@Pterodactyl-kn3ve editing from my Samsung T7 1TB SSD
Not with LumaFusion you haven’t. What app are you using? You’ve been able to read from SSDs for a while, but not edit.
@@iphoneographers yes on LumaFusion.
Now we can clearly say that the ipad is a laptop
Im still waiting on LumaFusion 3.0 here 😴
Ummm, LF 3.0 hasn’t been released yet.
Yeah it’s not released publicly yet but will be soon, heard recently by the end of July.
And I assume it won't work on ordinary iPad?
You can read from the SSD on older iPads and even iPhones, but you cannot edit from it. That requires USB-C or Thunderbolt.
@@iphoneographers thank you
iPad will still use internal memory. you'll have your "other storage" filled in no time.... They need to fix that.
I bought one of these, and for a non tech guy it was a total pain in the ass to set up. I sent it back. Not intuitive at all. If you’re not tech savvy, stay away. It doesn’t even show up anywhere in the iPad when you attach it- and this after watching a video of a guy talking about how well it worked with the iPad. Just ridiculous. These things should be plug and play, not tear your hair out stupid.
Are you referring to the SSD drive? They are plug-and-play on iPads or any computer. It ships formatted to ExFAT so it works on Mac or PC.
First!
