Hey Dave. I need to say thank you for all the great videos. I mentor newer beekeepers aging from 13 - 60. I send many of your videos to these newer beekeepers to watch so they can see what we are about to experience in their hives. Lately I’ve noticed a few have referenced your videos when we find a particular thing in their hives. Several I know have subscribed to your channel as well. Anytime your spending the extra time it takes to set up, record, edit and post these videos, just KNOW that they really are helping many.
I am fairly new at bees but everyone told me they would die off the first few years I tried it..but they are incredibly healthy. I swear they left a ‘digital’ note in the caped wax cells that said “Keep listening to David Burns and we will do just fine!” I agree with your philosophy. Our motto is “Speak the truth, act ethically, behave morally and if you get some happiness, be grateful and share what you can.” Satisfaction in life is so rare that it is worth working for!
You're a great teacher, David! We love your channel! We just split two of our hives that overwintered, looked healthy, and ready to start swarming. We did a reverse Queen split where we put each queen in the new child hives. You mentioned that when bees swarm they take the queen with them. Therefore, wouldn't a reverse queen split be most natural way to perform a split of your colonies? We're a regenerative, organic farm so we're always trying to promote the most natural systems and mimic nature as much as possible on our farm. Thanks again for all the knowledge!
Well I must be a looser, I've never won a trophy, but my life go's on. The trophy I'm after now is to have a bee yard for my golden years since I don't have gold I can have golden honey and thousands of friends.
My hive swarmed today too. Our Missouri weather was too wet and cold to check them this week, was anxious to get down there today, and boom! There they were... up in a tree! My husband and I managed to get them into a swarm trap and will get them in their new home tomorrow. Still looked like quite a few bees left in the hive. Newbee here 'less than one year' beekeeper. First time ever seeing a swarm. It was exciting to say the least! Thank you David for making these videos for us!
Good for you Theresa. Yes, experiencing a swarm is almost other-worldly stuff. And you up your experience/skill in being able to catch swarms. Makes you feel empowered.

Hi David I commented about a week or so ago about fearing my hive was worker laying. You mentioned that what I described sounded normal and that I should wait a week and check again. Turns out I do have a laying queen (very small) and the workers had just already cleaned her mark off making her harder to find than expected. I’m hoping they fatten her up and she starts laying a little more because there was still very little egg presence. I’m sure she’ll figure it out and be just as awesome of a layer as this queen was before your swarm. As a side note I’d love to hear your take on Vinofarm (fellow CZcams beekeeper) and his bee barn. I’m thinking about possibly attempting to construct something similar for my specific climate (not as heavy duty as what he needed)

David, I REALLY like your videos. I like how you take the time to EXPLAIN it in simpleton terms that a rookie such as myself can understand. My daughter and I have 2 hives and have to do our FIRST inspection on Wednesday since the installation of our nucs(PRONOUNCED NUKES,LMAO). Can't wait to get into it and see what's a going on. I'm from Southeast Iowa, so we have prrtty much the same weather as you do. Again, I REALLY APPRECITE ALL YOU DO FOR THE HONEY BEES and PEOPLE THAT ARE INTO IR GETTING INTO BEES. I do have to tell you a really cool story. I also had the situation where I knew the girls were planning their escape. That morning sure enough there they went. I had a swarm trap set up and they started to fly over to it. So I thought ahh what the heck .so I put out a whole hive body on top of the swarm trap and closed it up. Believe it or not they all flew in and made themselves at home. That swarm was about 30' away from the original hive. I have a teeny tiny yard so I had no where to where to put it. I had to leave it where it was. They're still there busily bringing in pollen. I kept Shaking my head saying this is not happening and it's no way gonna work. it did. the end.
You are one of the very best youtubers of beekeeping videos. I really enjoy your videos. Here in the mountains of nc I've been splitting like crazy. I've also been catching my neighbor's swarms... free bees are the best bees.
Thanks for sharing. What a colony! My one hive that came thru winter strong swarmed about two weeks ago. I was able to capture the queen and made a split. Then, the original hive swarmed again last Saturday. However, all the bees came back. I. checked it on Sunday and moved 3 frames of bees/brood into the split hive to create space. I checked this week and the split hive is doing well. Saw lots of capped brood and larvae. Checked the hive that swarmed and did not see any larvae. Saw at least 2 capped queen cells. Giving timing I think the new queen should emerge this week and start laying by next weekend. I will check next weekend to see what's happening. Like Illinois, here in Se PA our weather has been cold and rainy. This week it should be nice and the bees should resume their foraging.
Perfect timing on the video David :) One of my hives died about 3 weeks ago, Im assuming from Starving maybe :( . I was feeling defeated and then I came home a last week to swarm 20 feet up in my tree. I decided to keep going! I caught my first swarm and my hive that swarmed looks very strong from the outside still. So, today I will inspect them and see what happened. Thanks for the refresher!
i dont have a lot of upper body strength... so rather then picking something up from the ground... i put it on a box or a cinder block or whatever is handy. that makes it easier. i just love watching you with your bees. i can almost hear them say... hi david! how nice of you to visit us! and i always keep my pad and pen at hand... for those little pearls of wisdom.
Tip : For those who can't lift heavy Bee Boxes, or have dexterity to actually lift a box with both Hands (I do.) Always have an Empty Box at Knee/Hip height, eg rested on its Roof, on top of a Bin, Tote etc... even another Hive. Take each Frame out as you "Inspect" and keep it in the same orientation and location ! Newbie Beeks : 👀 Did you know... Bees put Brood near the main Door (Front) and Honey out at the Back (Rear Wall) mostly when in the Brood Nest ! SIMPLE way to check if you got it correct in placement ! 👍 * Only if you Run Frames Cold Way (Front to Back, not Side to Side ! That's Warm Way : Depends on Hive Type. Here in Scotland 🏴 UK some Hives can be 'square' and take Frames either way!) Not USA Langstroths... 🙄 You can also just use Nuc Boxes in your Tiers.... SEE a Beek on CZcams called Steves World (Beekeeper in Fla, USA.) Only uses Towers of Nucs. Easy to Lift and Manage... (and he's no Spring Chicken !) However, he does have buckets of humour ! 🤭 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2022. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 I have an injury, so am very limited in dexterity terms, but if it takes me X amount to do a full detailed Inspection, then I do it taking each Frame out one at a time. Enjoy the slow pace, say Hi to the Bees, and hardly get Stung or have angry Bees. Last year I had "NO" Swarming, whatsoever, just lots of Splits and Nucs etc. So doing everything from a Box, into a hold box, then Back to its Home Box, is more effort but achieved without hassel or more injury ! Excellent David. Installed the GA nuc last Saturday, removed the queen separator & despite the wet, chilly weather had several very good flight days. Seeing young bees out on the ledge taking first flights. Expecting the Rural King Carniolan bees from Utah to ship UPS early this coming week. R/K customer Svs claims the producer guarantees genetics. We'll see shortly. My 3rd nuc from FL is scheduled for p/u the 14th.

Question: using the same train of thought as the green drone frames, would you not scrape the capped brood off the other frames you have? I like to scrape all the capped drone comb off the bottom of the frames at least. Every little bit helps !!!
Was 1 Deep body an 3 honeys. Just today I added second hive body they decided to build their own hive in the 2” high feed extension… what a mess…..but i didn’t see a queen pod. But each box was over populated with bees an was at least 300 Between the intercover and the lid
David, are you saying this hive swarmed and now has no Queen? If so, correct me if i saw incorrect, but wasn’t that your Queen on the bottom corner of the frame (Yellow) at 22:35?

Dave, I live in South Georgia with a wide range of warm weather. I have a hive that rejected their queen but I found medium frame queen cups which emerged. I’ve heard your theory on get a new queen quickly back in the hive. But with our climate, I felt I was better off to allow the hive to make their own queen. Do you agree?
Not sure if the climate has much to do with it, but if the queen cell is capped, then you are only two weeks from having a laying queen which isn't bad. But a queen cup may take three weeks and that's a long time to go without a laying queen. But every hive is different according to their population and amount of brood.
BeeMeister....how do you keep your burlap consistently burning-smoking and not going cold?? I use burlap in same smoker you use and I too often times find myself having to drop everything and keep relighting the stuff. Its hi-quality food grade "dry" burlap....perhaps humidity in the rag??? Thanx
Sound like your fire grate at the bottom of your smoker is upside down or you never did spread out the legs on the fire grate. It is flat when shipped and you have to spread out the grate. I'll make a video on that.

Another great video! I just checked my hive for the first time and found some queen cells. I was installing a new Saskatraz queen so I squished them. Did I do the right thing?

Yes, honey bees have two large compound eyes and three smaller ocelli eyes. The ocelli are on top of their head in a triangle shape.Other insects have these ocelli too like ants, some flies, wasps, dragon flies, grasshoppers, locust etc.

I like watching your videos cuz I learn alot...1 question...what do u burn in your smoker. I'm burning pine needles but yours last forever

Why don't you use the flat end to separate the combs and then use the J hook to lift the frames?

Can over feeding lead to swarming? if they have the resources and numbers why wouldn't they?
Hi David Would like to make a comment about your lifting the boxes.You need to bend your knees when lifting boxes (health and safety) I wish I would took my own advice ! Check it out. I have had back problems in the past. Love how steady the bees are i wish my bees were all like that. Love your videos

Another great video! I just checked my hive for the first time and found some queen cells. I was installing a new Saskatraz queen so I squished them. Did I do the right thing?
Yes, IF they do not already have a virgin queen in there or a newly mated queen. Then they may kill your new queen.

Yes, generally. However, I've seem them swarm after the virgin queens have emerged.
Is it OK to get queens from out of state?

Yes, honey bees have two large compound eyes and three smaller ocelli eyes. The ocelli are on top of their head in a triangle shape.Other insects have these ocelli too like ants, some flies, wasps, dragon flies, grasshoppers, locust etc.
