- Spring is here, which means it's time to learn how to split a hive! This technique allows you to control the "swarm" and gives the flexibility needed for a successful hive split on YOUR time. In this step-by-step beekeeping tutorial we temporarily place the queen of a hive in a queen catcher (clip), and utilize resources from the current hive to start and supplement the split hive. John gives excellent advice for anyone attempting to split their hives this Spring. 2022 is your year for maximizing your bees' health and wellness.
You'll see us label certain videos as "Beekeeping 201", but that doesn't mean you have to be a professional apiarist to understand or follow the directions/advice. These are simply techniques that you may need a little extra knowledge, a certain tool, or some preparation to perform. Don't be intimidated, learn as much as possible and you can absolutely raise a healthy, vibrant hive of bees.
We're glad you're letting us show you what we know. Thank you all for watching and subscribing to our channel. If you have any questions, please give us a shout by leaving a comment or visiting our website at centralbeekeeperssupply.com!

I'm a subscriber and an online customer
I was given a very very old swarm trap that is full of bees. It doesn't have any frames in it and it's wide open. It was hand made. Very docile hive. I wonder if it's to late December 28th to try and get them in a hive box. Thank you for any help.
I am so much interested in this business based on what I have seen. Thank you so much. Teach me how to connect with you eanextly. I want to be a farmer
@@ZelmaBees We appreciate it very much! Thank you!

Had to give up my bees 25 years ago, now I'm an old man. Your videos bring back a lot of good memories. Thank you.
So nice of you to tell me that.
It means a lot. Thank you
As a novice beekeeper 3 years in, this year I'm going to make a couple of splits from my five hives. This video has been so well presented and laid out it's been a pleasure to watch. Your level of calmness and ease in which you work is something I aspire to.
Thank you so much! We're happy to be of help. Let us know if you have any questions.
This guy is like this all the time. We are blessed to have him in our area.
Nice to see how fellow beekeepers in other countries are working. Greetings from the Netherlands
We love talking to our international beekeeping friends! Thank you so much for checking in. How are the bees in the Netherlands today?
I am very surprised that you don’t have that many subscribers on your channel. You have one of the best quality videos editing and information out there. Thanks for your time and knowledge sharing. 🙏🏽👍🏼
Wow, thank you! We are still kindof new around here, so thank you for finding us! We appreciate you watching.
totally agree- great video- thank you-will subscribe and watch more-
from England
Great channel, excellent tutor. Subbed; greetings from South Africa
He's got another one today! Awesome videos!!
Well, the intro music is really annoying. But the rest is good. I almost navigate away when loud music that I have to turn down starts off. Then having to listen to music during intro narration is just agitating. Bob binnie doesn't need any of that.
I'm a new bee keeper this is the best video on how to split a hive ,thank you.
Thanks for the compliment, Joey! We're glad to have you along on the journey. Please let us know if you have any questions, or would like to see a particular subject covered on video. Have a great week!
There are several reasons these video's are of such high quality. Professional filming, knowledge of the subject, and clear communication. Because John listens to our questions, all day everyday, he understands our needs. He methodically explains and demonstrates, step by step, when, what, & how too. John isn't trying to show us what he knows, he obviously wants us to succeed in our Beekeeping Journey.
Thanks, David. That's one of our favorite things about John. He explains things clearly, takes his time, is patient, and has a world of knowledge between his ears. We're extremely fortunate to have him!
Very well put ,and I do agree
And so are we
Thank you, i do the same as you do in the Netherlands. But we have frames with longer ears take 1 ear in my fist and clap on it al the bees fall in the box and then i put that empty frame back.
One of best hive split explanations I have heard, well done 👍🇭🇲🇭🇲
Thanks! Glad it was helpful. 🐝
Very Professional Presentation ! : >)
I've made splits many different ways, but this year I've followed Central Beekeepers Supply's tutorial "How to Split a hive". After seeing Royal Jelly in a queen cup, I quickly caught the queen which was isolated in the Brood box per the "Pre-Split Inspection" video. I marked the frame (CBS) I took her from, and moved frames of brood, bread, food sources, and bee's exactly how John suggested. The split hive is 20 miles, from original location, and blowing up.. Capped Queen Cells were located on the marked frame, 9 days later, with plenty of brood and bees. This is an easy way to split and advert swarming. Whether you are a beginner or just tuning up before going into the field, these video's are like having a mentor with you. Thanks for taking the time to make them.
David, thank you for the extremely kind comment. We're thrilled to hear about your hives this year. Glad the method worked for you! We really appreciate you watching and commenting. Keep us updated on the progress of your hives, please!
Thank you so much for applying a common sense approach to splitting a hive. Leaving behind the frame that had the Queen on it was A Ha moment for me. That's the frame with the freshest eggs ready for the Workers to change it to another Queen.
My problem was I moved the entire frame with queen to the destination hive and the original hive failed. Then to add insult to injury, I moved a Brood Frame back into the failed hive which caused both hives to fail.
Thanks for opening my eyes.
Beekeeping is sometimes a trial-and-error job. I'm glad to hear that you're not giving up. Keep going!
Roll That Beautiful Bee Footage! that’s really a sign of a healthy colony and a healthy queen bee with all that brood seems like that’s what you wanna see!
Bee 🐝 keeping is a lot of work people think it’s just gathering honey 🍯 but
It’s so much more than that!
I'm a new beekeeper looking at attempting my first split. I've watched many videos on this but your video has been by far the best. Thank you
You are welcome. #RTBBF
I am about to do my first split as well. A little nervous about finding the queen and I don't have a clip but I do have an old queen cage from a purchased queen years ago.
really well done video. I like his slow and smooth style. I like how he explains it first, then shows it. I also like that he covers stem to stern. So many other videos just skip over really important steps.
Much appreciated!
#RTBBF
Evening reader. I am planning my split within the next few days. I will keep you posted. Thanks for your willingness
to help, Cobus🐋
Please let us know how it goes! Best of luck!
Well this is probably the best video about splitting hives I’ve seen. Very good
We appreciate that, Chris. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much, that was an amazing video. I'm just getting started with my research before I get my first hive and I will definitely be watching the rest of your videos l.
Best of luck! Give us a shout if you need any help!
You can use an old-school metal thumbtack as alternative to marking the keeper frame with a sharpie. This way you can take off the tack after the split is established. I’d imagine otherwise after a while you might have a bunch of random pen marks.
Excellent advice! Thank you for sharing that! 🐝
As a first year beekeeper, this is much appreciated. Thank you for your time and effort in posting.
So nice of you! Thanks for watching. If you ever have questions, you know where to find us. :-)
Best splitting video I have seen - well done sir!

You not only tell HOW to split but all the important reasons WHY and the RESULTS. Thanks. I will be trying this this week in Missouri.
Glad to hear it. Let us know how it turns out! Best of luck!
Great instructional video. After losing all our bees several year ago, I decided to try again and ordered new bees for 2023. After watching this video, I will try to split the new hive in the future.
Best of luck! Let us know if you have any questions!
I'm not a beekeeper yet. I'll be looking for a new homestead in about a month. After finding my new property I would like to have bees. Your video is the best as far as showing & telling the needed information. I hope this will help me be successful. Thank you.
Congratulations on the homestead. That's a lot of work, but it is very rewarding! Let us know if you have any questions. Thanks for the comment!
Enjoyed your presentation, very clear and understanding
Thanks Melvin! We appreciate you watching.
This is going to help us a lot because we will be 2 splits this week
Good luck! Let us know!
At 75 I am not a bee keeper and never will be. But after watching some of your well explained I would not have to many problems starting . I am in the UK and we need many more bees.
It takes a lot of patience and time, but it's well worth it. For the bees, the beekeeper, and the environment!
Hello@Alcoopop100, Never say Never! I am 65 and my husband is 73 and we just became new bee keepers! Got our first package 6 days ago. Please tell me we are Not insane! LOL

I’m a first time bee keeper. Very much enjoyed the video thank you for your time… not to that point yet but getting as much knowledge as possible. Great video Jason I’m surprised you only got zapped 1 time…. They were very non aggressive this morning - I like it way too…. Slow moving and just a little smoke…. Thanks again Middle Tennessee area

You're so welcome. We're glad you're watching, Paula. Let us know if we can help you!
Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge
Very well explained! Tkx.
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching, David!
For a new beekeeper it is good to see that you are using full size hive to make split raven than nuck as most people. I have 5 spare hives and was going to buy some nicks but now I know this doesn't matter and can use my spair hives.
It all comes down to ease of use for the beekeeper. Do what YOU feel is right for you. The bees will adjust and carry on. Thanks for the comment! We appreciate you.
Thank you. Very informative and helpful to a new beekeeper.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
Great Video! Thanks for sharing.
You bet! Thanks for watching!

Thanks David! We've been truly blessed with a calm bee yard. We've had some angry boxes in the past, and that's no fun. Thanks for watching!
I like your method of splitting. It makes sense!! 😁💕

Thanks, John. Very timely and goes along with our conversation last week.

@@CentralBeekeepersSupply Well I'm in Germany on the Mosel in a small wine village with slightly warmer temperatures due to protection from surrounding mountains and the river however the Arctic wind has brought lower temps and the coldest Spring in 30 years. (probably a Russian plan to make us buy more gas!!) The effect has been that Spring is late starting and kept bees cosy at home! Now sunny days have started the bees are very active early and keep their heads down in the cold evenings (night time 2°-6°C, day 14°C) At the last weeks inspection no Queen cells but brood, drones, capped and uncapped honey, pollen and the Queen seen but the warning signs were there so next inspection is Saturday and a split could be possible. I had to cut out a large frame of drone brood to reduce the Varroa threat and replaced it with a frame with only a third wax comb. I think I'm set up to avoid a swarm this year but who knows!
Thanks you are changing lives globally
Thank you for watching!
