To add a bit of knowledge:
This Codex was the first book ever to mention a (then) enigmatic entity named Ynnead living in the infinity circuit.
GW really played the long game with this one.
I just flipped through the codex and couldn't find it, what page number? There's only about half a dozen pages worth of lore in this thing anyway.
@@SCHMALLZZZ IIRC it was a story at the end of the book about a Farseer (maybe Eldrad - not trusting my memory) connecting to the infinity circuit and listening to the choir of Eldar souls forming the voice of Ynnead.
I actually think that was from the Craftworld Eldar supplement. But yeah definitely from one of those two books.
@@drinkupnerds yup, Codex: Craftworld Eldar
Pls no
The codex compliant series is hands down the best 40k stuff on CZcams, even beating auspex tactics in my opinion. Please, do more of them!
This is correct
@@GazpachoTabletop As is this
@@joepaineok another correct comment, what are the odds!
Yes. Auspex Tactics is too much on the neckbeard metacheese side of things. This channel just appreciates how weird and wonderful the game is.
@@ScooterinAB ew I don't care for rules or meta or anything like that. I just like to appreciate old things and see where the seeds for today's game was sowed
This video has unironically motivated me to paint those rad flame patterns on eldar guardians that have been in my pile of shame for months.
DO IT DO IT DO IT
Did you do it ?
The Web of Skulls is the most Imperium thing I've ever heard of the Eldar having, more so than the Harlequins getting Land Raiders in Rogue Trader.
Web of Skulls be like...
Farseers: _sweating_
&
Kheradruakh: "Interesting"
Seeing how fabulous the Harlequin jetbikes were, I can only imagine how fabulous a Harlequin Land Raider would have been.
@@ScooterinAB I once saw a Harlequin paintjob on a Hemlock wraithfighter that was just _chef's kiss_
It changed me, man.
I ENDORSE THIS MESSAGE!
*embarrassed face*
Of course avatars are daemons. They're fractional parts of a greater entity from the warp, just like Chaos daemons.
Wow, Eldrad's opinion on humanity has changed over 30+ years of the lore changing. From we will kill all humans to sending ambadsadors to the Imperial Regent and having Ulthwe fight alongside the Imperium often against Chaos, Orks, and Tyrannids.
Yeh, much better 30 years ago
I mean, that gyuy was interrogated and probably tortured by the Inquisition. I would have told him the same horrible shit.
Also, nothing's stopping you from using the mon'keigh to fight the greater foe, then stabbing them in the back when they're weakened or distracted. Eldars aren't stupid, they play the long game.
To be fair, a LOT happened in those years in-universe as well; two more Hive Fleets hit, Failbaddon succeeded, and suddenly the Eye of Terror was the goddamn full-bodied Terror of the Cicatrix Maledictum. Plus, an Imperial regent with the unusual combination of Authority and Common Sense which made diplomatic relations possible. After all, anybody other than a Primarch would have been shot for heresy if they tried to buddy up with Xenos outside of an immediate tactical alliance of convenience.
So, not so strange after all.
@@sebastianrubin7476 Also eldrad died, but he got better
"One cannot deny it is most certainly the third edition Eldar codex"
Dropping the hot takes today
Good book - when I started into 40k during 2nd edition I'd just kind of thought of the Eldar as 'the good aliens' (Orks were 'the bad aliens', and Tyranids 'the eat-everything aliens, like from Aliens'; I was quite young), this codex was the one that got me interested in their more nuanced maybe-help-you, maybe-kill-you inscrutability. I even started an army... and never fielded it, since with all those different Aspects I'd keep getting bored of whatever I was painting and move on to a new one, so every squad ended up with like two guys in it, every time I bought an Eldar vehicle I ended up hacking it to pieces to serve as the basis for new Dark Eldar vehicles, and (as always) got distracted inventing backstory rather than just finishing anything (their Farseer's got a starcrossed-lovers thing going on with my Chaos sorceress, it's hilariously awkward for both of them). They look good on the shelf though - Guardians in all-bone armour, Aspects with bone helmets over their usual body colours.
Also I'm absolutely taking it as fact that the Eldar 'falcon' is a wolf-bird.
One thing I think is worth bringing up here to contextualize the vibe of this codex's lore is something that Gav Thorpe said in an interview around this time. He noted that a lot of people seemed to think of the Eldar as "good guys" by default in earlier editions, and when writing their third edition codex he tried to make a point of emphasizing their at-best indifference toward the fate of other species if not outright hostility to those they see as usurping their former position of galactic dominance.
This codex is also a notable inflection point in which we start to see some divergence in both naming conventions and mechanics of the equipment that the Eldar used to make them more distinct from other factions. For example, this is where Eldar lasguns become lasblasters, Eldar lascannons become bright lances, Eldar plasma guns become starcannons, Eldar missile launchers become reaper launchers, etc. It seemed like part of a move to create more mechanical distinction between the factions when in older editions different factions would often share similar kinds of rules.
Avatars being Daemons maskes sense to me. After all, Celestine herself is basically a loyalist daemon!
The Chaos Gods are basically Daemons, being collective manifestations of thoughts and emotions, the Eldar Gods were the same, just created by more 'Sophisticated' minds. Its why Khaine is basically Khorne, but less into Thrash Metal
There's an awful lot of things that should probably be daemons. All the primarchs for instance...
That doesn’t really explain the reasoning behind why the Avatar “makes sense” to be a daemon. The justification would be that the Eldar Gods were warp beings that had bodies of Wraithbone, which would make the Avatar a smaller fragment of that same reality for Khaine.
@@ImrahilToChaos my point is that "Daemon" is just the Imperium's conception of a warp or supernatural based entity
@@weldonwin probably prefers later Opeth and Porcupine Tree
100 shurikens per seconds? That's just an elaborate shotgun.
I love how wib has the Australian Siri, presumably because it reminds him of snipe! So adorable lol
As a fellow Australian I can say that Aussie Siri is best siri
Love Arbitor Ian too, but y’all are the kings and queens of this shit. Walk with pride.
When I see Eldar art from the 90's my mind always goes to Rites of War, the turned-based strategy game that came after Chaos Gate. I played the heck out of that game! EDIT: Oh, you actually used music from that game around 08:00!
For all intents and purposes Celstine and Guilliman are also kind of Daemons since you know warp stuff involved in creating them
I like to imagine that the Legion of the Damned are Imperial Daemons; created in the Warp by the collective unconsciousness of humanity.
Guilliman is not a daemon, he is a human, difference is Guilliman is Guilliman, he is not powered by thoughts or faith, he is his own person, in theory all life is just warp stuff, that what a soul is, difference between a human and a daemon is one has free will and the other is just thoughts taken form.
How Guilliman was created does not change the fact he is still a independent life form. If people stop believing in Guilliman he would still exist, daemons are not the same.
@@Fourtytwo4242 Primarchs not really human. Guilliman explains this himself to Fabian, the man he makes own of his historitors in first the Dawn of Fire. There made from human genetic material but that's where it ends. Vengeful Spirit and First Heretic confirm the Emperor made a deal with the 4 Ruinous powers to create them and there is a Warp based element of there creation and then reneged on the deal and that's the reason the 4 Chaos gods put aside their great game and work together to cause the heresy as revenge on the Emperor.
Of you have read the final Dark Imperium novel GodBlight, the Primarchs being somewhat Daemons of the Emperor becomes even more explicit, I do not want to spoil the novel thougn
Do we really think the model on the right at 12:50 had a black undercoat? I bet they just blacklined one with a white undercoat. Imagine trying to lay down a yellow like that over chaos black using 90s paints. It would have been a foot thick.
TBH the 90's paints were just better. I still use Sunburst Yellow because... it works. It hasn't dried out even though the last time I bought it was *1997*.
@@Arquinsiel They really weren't. Your pot of Sunburst Yellow that was created before some of the current staff were born has just dried out some and thickened.
@@ScooterinAB That's odd, because it went on fine directly over black in 1997 and I specifically mentioend that it *hasn't* dried out yet.
Or maybe 1998. It might have been after New Years before I started painting my starter box Orks.
Seeing as the wearer of the Phoenix Lord's armour becomes them literally, it is very possible that they are trans too
Wtf...
Tha alphabet mafia strikes again!
@@justarandomname420 No, seriously. This is ooooold lore all the way back to 2nd edition in the 90's. The body, gender, personality or really _anything_ of the person who puts on a Phoenix Lord's armor doesn't matter at all, because the spirit of the original Phoenix Lord is contained in the armor, and it completely overwrites whoever puts it on. Basically if you're an eldar putting on Asurmen's armor after finding it then you're basically comitting suicide to give Asurmen some fleshy bits which can be used to make his body (which is really the armor) move again. Originally even the exarches were like that. The spirits of the previous exarches to wear that armor were drawn into the spirit stones embedded in it and every time a new exarch donned the armor following the death of the previous wearer they and their experience and skills were added to the armor's, but the personality would normally always be the first exarch to wear the armor because it was usually the strongest of them.
I suppose this old lore can be argued to be more a case of being possessed by a ghost, but yeah, any eldar can don the armor of a destroyed Phoenix Lord and if they do they will become that Phoenix Lord no matter who or what they were before that moment.
This book was my entry into 40k, back in 1999. I looked at the Falcon picture in that sweet Biel-Tan paint scheme and it turned me into the professional nerd I am today. I'm still madly in love with it to this very day.
We love both of you, drummer Matt and Arbitor Ian all equally. All of your content is great fun, at least for us who long for the nostalgia of the 90s.
I still play third edition codex Eldar.
The thing was when that came out the Tau had never been heard of and the Necrons hadn't started to wake up and crawl out of their tombs.
I especially like Wib’s impromptu impression of Arkwright from ‘Open All Hours.’ (Ccccc-catacombs) 😊
Gggg-ranville fetch ya cloth!
I believe there was a piece of flavour text in Codex Craftworld Eldar that clarified the pronunciation of Saim Hann as "Sam Hine". Usual caveats apply but I think they might have been trying to be Gaelic with these made-up space elves' ship names.
Then it probably should have been pronounced Sow Win - but that is not the most commonly known fact
@@grievuspwn4g3 the name "Vlka Fenrika" sounds more Slavic than Germanic to this Dane, compare to the Russian word for wolf being "volk" and the Danish word being "ulv"
i always assumed that "saim-hann" was meant to be like "samhain, but eldar"… samhain being the celtic festival marking the end of harvest and beginning of winter (but now basically interchangeable with hallowe'en in some parts, unless perhaps you're a practicing wiccan), which is pronounced a bit like "sowin" or "sow'n" (ow as in "ow! that hurt!", not ow as in "sowing seeds")
Yeah, several of the eldar craftworlds are based on the festivals of the celts. Yme Loc is Imbolc, Biel Tan is Beltaine, Lugganath is Lughnasa and Saim Hann is Samhain. I always presumed Saim Hann was pronounced "same hahn", which kinda makes sense (to me) as it basically swaps the vowel sounds of how you would pronounce samhain if you didn't know the correct pronunciation. xD
Celtic derived names are something of a running theme for Eldar, a lot of their worlds and character names are Celtic based.
Ahh the nostalgia. This was the first codex I bought, I think I even still have it somewhere. Fun fact, despite wave serpents being in this book, they didn't get an actual GW model until the 4th ed codex rolled around some years later (though iirc there was a forge world conversion kit you could get).
GW probably expected players to convert their own Wave Serpents from Falcon kits at the time, remember seeing quite a few fanmade Wave Serpents at that time
You missed a golden opportunity to mis-syllable the term 'sweet-ass flames' to 'sweet ass-flames'
This is the first codex I played with properly.
It has:
- The lovely quote on the side about arrogance and firepower.
- Doom wasn't here!
- star cannons were the core of the army, but I couldn't build pewter wraithlord models so I just bought a bunch of falcons.
- wave serpent rules and bright lance rules didn't affect each other, so clearly eldar did a lot of infighting at some point.
- fireheart, who is amazing and we're still waiting for a model over 20 years later.
I have always put hot rod flame effects on my eldar jetbikes! I don't know if I saw those paint jobs and then forgot about it, or whether I had a wacky idea that was vindicated, but either way I'm glad I watched
This series has inspired me to to collect all the 4th and 5th edition codexes and I’m currently halfway through that goal
It's a great excuse to go to second hand book shops and car boot sales (as well as hunting for old minis) :)
@@vattmann1387 definitely I’ve been able to find a lot of them at Half Priced books
@@doctoradventure413 I'm rather jealous of one of my mates who works in the oil industry as he has an archive of all the old Warhammer books and shit loads of RPG games :)
I love the love between this channel and ArbitorIan, discovered both around the same time and really enjoy both channels styles.
"I am Stephen Murphy" "I AM Stephen Murphy" "I...Am... Stephen Murphy!"
"I'm Stephen Murphy and so's my wife!"
“It’s not confusing shut up” is my new reaction image
You guys are great. Ian is great. It's great to have both.
Ah, my first codex.
As sparse as those early 3rd codexes were they sure knew how to do a lot with a little.
Not gonna lie, those black flame designs over a field of yellow are _fucking sick._
I wanna let you guys know that I finally noticed the squishmallows in the intros and I enjoy this one the most because of how derpy and happy he looks.
Destructor was amazing, and absolutely disgusting in the hands of a Craftworld Eldar Ulthwe Seer Council. Just a wall of psychic heavy flamers...
I remember dreading that with my IG army whenever my mate brought out his Eldar list.
This was my first codex, I didn’t even know what warhammer was at the time. I got it because I liked the art on the front
this is the first time I've actually been able to read along with one of these, which is wild because I only own two codices and neither are for armies I've owned
Aw da lil screaming ork charging da tank!
I was just craving a new video from you guys last night.
Eldar are a softspot, so im happy.
I love that you kept the outtake in at the end
The chances of a frog ending your subscription to life is low, but never 0
Like, Saim Hann is just meant to be "Samhain" chopped up and rearranged a bit, right?
A Codex Compliant and an upcoming model retrospective??? You’re spoiling us!
Into cracked me up😂 love you guys, always a big fan
The trans comment isn't even incorrect. Because the identity and consciousness of a Phoenix Lord is based upon their armour and not upon the wearer, many of the Phoenix Lords can absolutely be trans by way of having female or male bearers of the title for a Phoenix Lord identifying as the opposite gender.
I also feel like the codex mischaracterizes the Eldar pretty heavily regarding their view of humanity and also treats them how the Imperium would: With the most reductionist stance possible. Unlike The T'au, Imperium or anyone else, the Eldar are not lead by one or even two or three people. Most Eldar Craftworlds are not hellbent on destroying all humans, and in fact only Biel-Tan tend to be so violent and aggressive. In addition it should be noted they have this attitude towards humans, who are - yenow - the Imperium. Hard to blame them sometimes.
As always great video guys. This was the first codex ever saw from a kid at school and what started my journey haha
My Thousand Sons are very vibrant. I decided that Magenta/Cranberry and Navy Blue are my primary colors, with a Lilac and Canary yellow for accents. Ahriman is very garish as well.
My first ever codex
I knew they were going to mention the blue color! This is why I watch all these videos despite having never played 40K once.
Ah. The nostalgia. My second army, and Codex, after Space Marines.
Back when most people playing Eldar preferred Guardian Defenders over Dire Avengers, despite the stats of the Guardians being, eh, somewhat underwhelming, because of the fact that both units used the same shuriken catapult; a two-shot bolt pistol equivalent.
Scatter lasers were fun in a full squad of War Walkers, 6 to 36 shots a turn was fun.
Sure am glad I stayed aallllll the way to the end. This video made my night! Lots of love.
Neat to see the web of skulls had rules. I only knew about that one existing because of the old model of a Dark Reaper Exarch using it.
I actually have this codex! As well as the Craftworld codex from the same era! I also got the 4th ed version of this dark Eldar necrons and imperial guard all free when I bought some necrons warriors bits for a possible conversion for I think 5$ total 4 years ago. Yay for being able to follow along
Absolute steal
I love your Codex Compliant Series! :D Gets me in the Nostalgia ever time. :) Thanks for the great video, you juciy little nuggets. :3
I've already pre-ordered the codex. Thank you for the wave of nostalgia as I played 3rd ed and kicked the arse of many a newbie eldar player with my old Space Marine army. Brought an Eversor to deal with Avatars...
Samhain is an Irish and general celtic word that is pronounced like Sawin. Its where modern Halloween comes from and is the celtic day of the dead/ New year.
Wow, if this is the Eldars attitude to mankind I can't wait for the Dark Eldar video.
It's entirely possible that I've now watched this three times. As such I feel confident in saying that the phrase "juicy nuggets" does not get better
“…as someone that’s currently undergoing diagnosis for ADHD…relatable…” - huh, who knew Snipe was actually a wraith construct…
😜
Also, regarding trans Eldar; not sure if it was just fanon, but fairly sure that I’ve read canonically some Banshee are trans - when a male Eldar walks the path of the Banshee, they put aside their male identity and adopt a female one for the duration of their time as a Banshee. Implicitly this could mean that all Eldar are actually gender fluid, although unfortunately I can’t imagine GW would address this in modern fluff (then again, depending on the author that could go badly if it was included in a codex or BL* novel).
* off topic - manga/anime has ruined me; as I typed this my brain autofilled BL as ‘Boys Love’ rather than ‘Black Library’. 😂
All I remember of Eldar from my childhood as I almost never encountered them at a GW store or an event being fielded by other players since 3rd edition is that Warp Spiders were OP broken nasty to face; Eldar had crazy psychic powers which made chaos sorcerers look tame by comparison and broken as heck strong jet bikes and nasty zappy tanks. They also had really cool looking walkers which although they look cool and intimidating were actually crap on the table top and were easily bested by the ugly boxy full metal dreadnaughts half their size with no real effort, in fact, the only space marine vehicle they posed a serious threat to were Land Speeders.
The gem painting suggestions also appeared in the high elves 5th edition warhammer army book. Shocking!
One of the lasting wielding Iyanden Guardian models in that codex you showed was one of the first attempts at a plastic guardian boxed set. A friend of mine played Eldar and even be thought they were ugly (I think we mutually agreed that the helmets looked like they had been squashed between a couple of bricks, ah, happy days).
Lasgun
Yay! These are my favourite videos you make. I started 40k quite late (8th) but these videos are fascinating every single time.
My first codex and army . No one in our gaming club wanted to play them so I did . They all thought Eldar weak until I won a few games then all the Marine armies hated me . Really great models for its time . I enjoyed 3rd and 4th edition but not the confusing mess of modern rules which have to be constantly updated . Less restricted rules but one had to convert falcons to make wave serpents , great fun trying but at least you could have an individual army
Love this. So much nostalgia.
It’s insane how little the unit selection has changed over the years
This is the Edition I started with. Been Iyanden from the start and still continue to play this craftworld.
I guess that Embolden makes Guardians brave enough to ask out their crush. "Notice me, Warlock-senpai!!"
In conclusion, the 3rd Edition Eldar Codex truly is the 3rd Edition Eldar Codex of 3rd Edition Eldar Codices.
Cheers for another fun video. The total nerfing of all psykers in 3rd ed. was a reaction to Dark Millenium's sometimes broken psychic system (but not as broken as the magic in 4th ed. Warhammer, hoo boy). It had been coming for some time - towards the end of 2nd ed, start of third several new armies appeared with no psykers at all - Sisters, Necons, Tau, and finally Dark Eldar. It took years before the balance swung back a bit (I quite like 9th's pysker rules tbh).
Oh, and good luck with that diagnosis, however you want it to turn out. I kinda get it as five years back I got diagnosed autistic, in my mid 40s. Yes - I am an autistic oldhammer guy. Hoo boy do I like to find technical faults in your videos, but, no, I will resist shouting them out to the world because NO-ONE likes to hear the brutal truth. Smile, be happy...
Dark Millennium was a blast, but yeah, they were some of the most broken rules in the game. But GW's overcorrection in 3rd edition that basically made most psychic powers just a gun was also dumb.
Samm-Hainn in paganism is pronounced Sow-ain, the word for Halloween
Fun video as always. Good luck to snipe for the ADHD diagnosis 👍
You guys really enjoy what you doing and you guys are funny
Spelves! Hopefully this (and the teased guardian retrospective) is the last harrah of the third edition eldar line. GW if you're reading this please finish updating the aspect warriors this year.
"The" Gav Thorpe!? 😍
3:15 Based on the name, I presume that the "conceal" psychic power covers up zits?
Hmmmmm, juicy nuggets of fluff deposits. 🤪
If you have to sacrifice a dude in order to bring an Avatar to life then yeah, its a daemon!!
Wonderful Video. Love you're silly eldar nonsense!
Those Eldar back then were freakishly strong and you could have some really cheesy armies. Or maybe that was craftworld eldar with the council thing. I remember them dominating a lot until Necrons came around and then Grey Knights made everyone cry.
I want Stephen Murphy to see this so badly it hurts
Love it!!! And yeah Arbiter Dan is great but yall are the OG!!!!
My original army book. I still love it. Especially combined with Craftworld Eldar.
Which I really would argue you can't separate out for the legit 3rd ed Eldar experience.
And also Ulthwe Strike Force from Codex: Eye of Terror
I've no idea why I watched this. I own this codex, I know all this. And yet I did, and I enjoyed it.
I feel old.
I'm still upset that the Avatar was tougher than the great unclean one in this book.

That whole, Mon-keigh thing, adds ever growing justification that all elves in fantasy are dingbat, and deserve whatever catastrophe that befalls them. And a couple stabbings.
Two bottles of DAN AKROYD'S CRYSTAL HEAD VODKA attached by light chains.
"We like ArbitorIan more as well"... Awwww.
FINALLY! My first codex and first army!
Give us more jucy nuggets and fluff deposits, script man!
But be careful not to mix them up! No-one likes getting their deposits of fluff on their juicy nuggets.
Thanks for all the juicy nuggets and fluff deposits
This was my first army and first codex and I’m getting horrifying flashbacks.
*Looking at the Eldar lore and the Imperium Lore* ... Yeah, I think Tau are one of the best choices.
This is also the first time we see the term "mon-keigh" show up. So there's that.
Yeah.. When the Starcannons really became annoying.. Remember the Battle Report in WD 236 maybe? Just right after the orks.... ^^
Samhain is a word. It means summers ending, it's pronounced sown.
8:41 the eldar called humanity's homeworld earth and not Terra? Weird.
Excellent video yet again. I really enjoy this series. 👍
Finally! Been jonesing for some codex compliant!
