He was the longest reigning pope of and the transition between the old regime papacy and the modern papacy. He laid the pattern for a lot of things to be. It is sad that towards the end of his life he was sad and disillusionned but he kept his winning personnality. Just imagine! Born in 1792 under the pontificate of Pius VII (the victim of Napoleon) he was pope during the most challenging times of the awful 19th century....and ultimately won the the admiration and the respect they wanted to deprive him....

He was a dreadful person ,not a good person , one of his acts alone is disgusting. A Jewish family had a little bit who became very I'll. they had a catholic maid who secretly baptised the child,he recovered, and because according to the pope he was now a catholic ,he had the police go to the boys home and kidnap him, and despite their protests he was never returned to his family. What a dreadful human being. the way he treated others he had no right to takes child from his parents that was child abuse
