1947 Maytag 72D

1947 Maytag 72D starting cold. The only things I did to this engine after purchasing was to oil where needed, file the points, and install new spark plugs. For anyone who doesn't know, these little engines were used to power Maytag washing machines in households that did not have electricity. This 2-stroke engine is rated at 2/3hp and is designed for a 16:1 fuel/oil mix ratio with 30W non-detergent oil. I am using a 24:1 mix with good 2-stroke oil mix, which should be sufficient. RPMs are controlled in a hit & miss style by shorting out the ignition at a certain preset speed.

I know that you are averse to the smoking but the 16:1 mix will be better for the engine. Lots of trouble to change the brass bushings in the crankcase when they wear out from lack of oil. When you run it long enough it may seize up. Hopefully you won't have scored the bushings at that point. But it's your engine so you can do what you want with it.
A governor in the crankshaft regulates the engine speed in a Maytag Model 72. Very ingenious design.
