About One Hour One Life
This game is about playing one small part in a much larger story. You only live an hour, but time and space in this game is infinite. You can only do so much in one lifetime, but the tech tree in this game will take hundreds of generations to fully explore.
This game is also about family trees. Having a mother who takes care of you as a baby, and hopefully taking care of a baby yourself later in life. And your mother is another player. And your baby is another player. Building something to use in your lifetime, but inevitably realizing that, in the end, what you build is not for YOU, but for your children and all the countless others that will come after you. Proudly using your grandfather's ax, and then passing it on to your own grandchild as the end of your life nears.
And looking at each life as a unique story. I was this kid born in this situation, but I eventually grew up. I built a bakery near the wheat fields. Over time, I watched my grandparents and parents grow old and die. I had some kids of my own along the way, but they are grown now... and look at my character now! She's an old woman. What a life passed by in this little hour of mine. After I die, this life will be over and gone forever. I can be born again, but I can never live this unique story again. Everything's changing. I'll be born as a different person in a different place and different time, with another unique story to experience in the next hour...

Omg, I played today for the first time in over a month and just happened to end up as the leader of 30 people. It was complete chaos! It was babysitting for the majority of the time - trying to teach, keep people alive, overall trying to function. But also so many mean trolls with constant slur throwing. Luckily I was a male, so it didn't kill my gene score too badly 🤣
I just curse those trolls so I don't have to deal with them in the future

I love your videos. I came across them two weeks ago and have been binging so many. Unfortunately I don't have a computer to play OHOL, but I did download You Are Hope. It's been a crazy learning curve.
I started with farming, keeping berries alive, planting crops. Moved to making pies and stews.
Finally learned to smith.
Craziest thing to learn so far was making a bowl of noodles in turkey broth with sliced eggs and chopsticks. Someone in town had made the noodles, and filled a bowl with them making it unusable until the meal was finished. I made it my life's work to empty that bowl.
It seemed like every time I figured out one step there was one more. I ended up doing a lot of things if never tried, like crafting a bow and arrow, hunting turkeys, force-feeding people slices of turkey to get the bones for the broth.
Finally finished broth and tried to eat my soup, no good, needed eggs!
That part was easy and when I added sliced eggs I still couldn't eat it, needed chop sticks.
At this point someone had lured a bear into town and here I am trying to craft chopsticks while standing on an item while a bear ran back and forth over me.
I never did end up eating that stew, but I did finish it.

Thank you for this video. It gives a great overview to start with. Me as a fairly new player I face some difficulties which may have an easy solution:
1.1 Is there a different way to get baits for rabbit traps, other than burdock?
1.2 Do Burdocks regrow in an area or are they gone forever?
2. When there are already onions growing, is there a different way to get new rows growing instead of getting wild onions blooming?
3.1 What can one do, when the town (cistern, well) ran out of water and one doesn't have a horse / delivery cart?
3.2 Is there a way to use diesel water pumps or newcomen pumps to get water? I guess I would need to use Kerosin?
4. When I don't know every little detail about the game, how do I make sure to not waste valueable resources/opportunities? I.e. getting the last drop out of a goose pond, which will make the goose to leave, is a bad decision.
1.1 You can make bait either from a burdock or from a bowl of berries + carrots, check onetech for the exact recipe - onetech.info/3180-Flat-Rock-with-Rabbit-Bait
1.2 Burdock doesn't regrow, in fact most natural resources don't respawn at all
2. Planting a wild onion gets you seeds, planting those seeds gets you five regular onions, planting regular onions gets you more seeds.
3.2. Town wells have a linear upgrade chain (shallow -> deep -> newcomen -> diesel). You can try upgrading it to the next level, but often times you don't have the resources to do so you you need to get water from the wild (filling buckets from ponds or making a backup well ~100 hundred tiles away). If your town doesn't have carts that's kinda bad and you should try making more
3.2. Diesel water pumps need kerosene to work, newcomen pumps need rubber + water bucket + charcoal + fire to work. You also need an iron tank to get water out of them.
4. If you're new the most important thing is to learn, and the best way to learn is from mistakes. Don't worry about it too much, one goose doesn't make that big of a difference in the long run.
1.1 Yes, you can also make rabbit bait by filling a bowl with berries and adding a carrot to it, mashing it with sharp rock (or knife) and adding that to a flat rock instead of burdock.
1.2 No, unfortunately, burdocks are not renewable. But you can always explore for more, assuming you can still make it back.
2. Yes actually, you can replant the onions you harvest and they will give you seeds just like planting wild onions.
3.1 Well, that's a difficult situation. Usually you can upgrade the well with things you have but if that's impossible, you can drain nearby ponds for water as a temporary solution or you can build a second, nearby well but that is not permanent either. You will eventually need rubber or kerosene so you will need to make a cart and look for other towns or hope that someone finds your town and helps you. Alternatively you can use outside of game chats to ask for help, such as discord or from a mod called hetuw that has a chat of its own.
3.2 You can upgrade an exhausted deep well to Newcomen pump, which requires a constant supply of charcoal and rubber to produce water. After that drains, you can use a diesel engine and use kerosene to get water. You can alternatively skip the newcomen if you have a spare engine and kerosene lying around. You can even build a kerosene wick burner which is basically a newcomen engine that consumes kerosene but it's usually not preferred.
4. Well, that's mostly trial and error. I learned that way. Sometimes I wasted entire buckets of water trying to learn smithing with newcomen engine. Sometimes I wasted eggs by leaving them on hot flat rock for a long time and they got burned. Most things are common sense but sometimes you have no way of knowing without experiencing it. For any questions you have, you can use the official discord to ask them away.

Twisted- I never ever ever die of starvation in this game- someone find a video of him dieing of starvation
I'm sure there's a video of him tempting fate by trying to wait till the last second to eat so that he gets the most benefit of the food, only for something to happen and he starved to death.
I remember in a stream a few months ago, he went out looking for something, and misjudged how much time he had, and didn’t find a green biome in time, so he died of starvation. He said it was the only time he had died of starvation in 2020, besides moms refusing to feed him occasionally.

Don't know if you're still curious, but the leader died and a new person was selected to be leader. Leaders don't have that much of an effect, but they can order their followers to do something and all the followers will see the order as a chat message above their heads.
