- This time in the shop I have a 1981 Chevy K10 4x4 that will not move forward. Watch me go through the diagnosis process on this Turbo-Hydramatic 350. And I find that the devil is in the details, a small little part caused allot of damage to this transmission.
Gosh, I’ve been trying to figure out the same thing on my 78 gmc pickup and guess what, I checked the fluid all the time, said it was full. But my dipstick is completely missing that cap, so the dipstick is not even sitting in the right position at all. Gosh, really unfortunate you have basically confirmed that my transmission is burnt up. Thanks! Side note, I very much appreciate the video, if I rebuilt it, I would have never even realized the dipstick issue haha thanks!
It has the rubber plug, but no cap, thought I’d mention that.
Sitting here right now with a 79 gmc with the same exact problem. Reverse no forward gears .DIPSTICK!!!!! YOU ARE ON POINT.GREAT VIDEO AND I ONLY HAD TO BACK IT UP FOR 2 MILES LOL!!!
Good luck with the rebuild. I am not a transmission expert, but they are a fun challenge to rebuild.
My 76 c20 pickup has had so many issues since yesterday. The dipstick doesn't have a cap . I think you solved my problem. Thank you so much.
✊Right on Man! Thank you, great advice. Don't only treat the symptom, treat the cause! Now if only we could get the Medical industry to treat us the same...!! 🙄 Till next video, Thank you
Awesome video and info 👍 I'm having an issue on a buddy's 1970 Chevy Monte Carlo.. it shifts gears, no noise or binding. But won't move in any direction.. forward or reverse. Fluid is clean and full.. but his lever stick has the cap loose just like the one in the video. This video helped me out a lot. Thanks Pal 👍👍
Great video, thanks for your knowledge RJ👊🏼
Hard work is still short on respect and appreciation.👍great info bud .and thanks
I own a 1975 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 with a TH350. Before the car is able to shift to drive and reverse. Later on the Front seal of the transmision was leaking so my Dad and I had to remove the old seal infront, pain in the butt without a garage to have space. Now I know why the car isn't shifting. Thanks for the info!
Excellent discovery work. Sometimes as simple as that.
Same exact problem here on my 55 belair ! Thank you ! Im gonna have my forward fixed and check the stick . Ill update with results
Great tip and troubleshooting video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Joel for the watch and the comment.
Ty sir very good advice I am 70 still learning
Nice job man keep up the good work
Thanks. It was an interesting project.
I just bought a 90 k2500 with a th400. Ecerything seems fine till it gets up to temp. Than it starts to slip. Any advice?
Good job and thanks.
I guess they didn't notice trans was slipping until it just wouldn't move anymore. But yeah, check fluid and dipstick is broken would still result in low fluid.
I also learned these clutches could wear considerably before they no longer engage, that's a huge amount of wear.
I've also seen these dipsticks damaged in this way.
I don't rebuild allot of transmissions, but I have pulled a few apart that had nightmare looking clutches, but they were still driving. Pretty robust system. Thanks for the comments.
Im trying to but a 70 c10 from a friend and i hear it only goes in reverse. He says it is the clutch pack but is there anything else i should be warry about
My 78 k5 is exactly the same way as the cap is loose but I know to push it against the seal and I’ve been to busy to simply put a few tacs on it so someone else won’t screw it up if I ever sell the truck. I think I will do that tomorrow morning.
Do you have any idea as to what would happen if someone were to install the trans filter backward? Asking for a friend
What causes torque converter failure? Opened mine up...looked Like a rock had been inside, lots of broken and bent fins...
After a fresh trans rebuild what would cause car not to move at all but go in gear and start? Rebuild kit installed. New torque converter also
can the wrong torque converter cause a broken crank
I wish I could get an opinion on the material in my pan and filter.
Ok mine want go in reverse but I do have forward what should I do?
Had same problem reverse only, backed home remove trans disassemble intermediate clutch bad . Pressure okay. Clean install kit an assembled trans worked fine for many years. The fluid was never low one of those shit happens issues.
Good catch
Thanks Scott.
Nice job man very impressive keep up the good work
Hey , I have a 87 Chevy blazer 4+4 it 350 engine I think 350 trans I have all the forward gears . But very slow going into reverse any ideas
Watch the video
I noticed the cap on the dipstick was loose and repaired it but the seals are all shot. 😢
What if you have no drive or reverse at all and plenty of fluid. Could a clogged filter cause this? Need help..
I’m having the same problem mine just quit out of nowhere while driving still won’t move after it cooled down
I had the same Dip stick I cleaned it up and dropped a mig weld peanut just ahead of the cap on the dip stick so the cap could no longer move up the stick end the problem NO more low fluid level Hey did GM ever use the Turbo 350C lock up on a 4 wheel drive ?
I converted a non-locking TH350 to 4x4 once, the sales guy asked me numerous times if it had the word "metric" stamped into the pan. I don't see why it couldn't work b/c they both look the same to me but check of course before going that route. FWIW, I had to change the rear output shaft for a shorter one, all parts came from Advance Adapters and took me about a day, I'd guess two days if you include removing and installing.
I have a 78 chevy c30 2wd with a 350 engine. Same exact symptoms, reverse only. I believe its a THM350 transmission based on an auto parts online breakout. Does that sound like the one in this video.
Sounds like there is something going wrong with the forward clutches. The only definitive way to know is to run a pressure test. Good luck.
So full fluid the pressures were right? but it still wouldn't drive because the clutch was burned out?
Correct. Proper fluid level brought the pressures back in spec, but the damage was already done to the forward clutch pack. I replaced all of the clutches in the transmission, but I did not change anything in the pressure system, and the transmission has been holding up fine ever since.
“I backed it down the road about 7 miles.” Lol
Not one many people can say they have done! Thanks for watching. R.J.
All Reality 🔥
I did the same today, but only about 3 miles. People looked at me really strange. Hahaha
Customer told me one time, yeah, I checked it a couple weeks ago and it was low.Well did it make a difference when you filled it up? I haven't actually filled it up yet, I didn't think it was enough to matter. Lol Well, you might could have saved us this job if you had. When your tranny fluid is full of tiny bubbles it can't hold the clutches tight enough for it not to slip them.
Also, this was a very good video. And people need to be aware of changing to aftermarket dipstick tubes. Remember they're made in China, where they don't have a real one to go by. Lol
86 Silverado 305 350th same thing
I want to learn to work on cars . Whats the easiest car to work on to get started ? I was thinking an old vw bug
Actually you're looking at it. I'm a huge Dodge/Plymouth guy but I have no problems saying that the '73-'87 Chevy C10 pickup is probably one of the best vehicles ever made. They're easy, they're bulletproof, they're utilitarian, they come in all shapes and sizes, they were made by the millions, they can be dirt cheap. You'll find them laying about rusting in fields or sitting in driveways for the past 9 years.
You will almost always find them with SBC motors (small block Chevy - 305, 350, 355, 383) these are virtually identical motors (305 actually has minor internal differences and is basically shunned bc you cant make them perform for the money to build them. People will literally GIVE you complete 305s that are just taking up space) but SBC's are crazy modular. And the aftermarket is INSANE.
Transmissions are the same story, TH350, TH400, 700R4, 200R4, all use the same bell housing. different guts - same platform. For this reason the transmissions are cheap to build with crazy aftermarket.
Best part, since they're so modular and popular the available knowledge on how to build them from top to bottom exist everywhere. Trans not working? Theres a video for that. White smoke? Theres a video for that. Throttle stiff? Paint bad? Death rattle? Weird ticking noise? Light flashing? Wanna weld up the floors? Take the whole fucking cab off? Theres videos for that.
Find one with *good floorboards* for cheap. Doesnt have to run. Just light rust. Then decide what you wanna build. Drag truck? Street rod? Hi boy? Mountain Queen? Swamp monster? Low rider? Daily worker? Or maybe somewhere in between all of your own.
Then you star with the basics. Drain your oil, trans, drop their pans, change their filters, fill 'em up, change your battery, fuel filter, and maybe starter if she just clicks instead of cranks still. After that the rest is all on you but just as obtainable.
Good luck man, I hope you get hooked like the rest of us did :)
I agree I have a 73 c10 stepside I get compliments every where I go
@@mrcwoodworks4523 Hey.... I have and drive (daily driver for all my life since 1975) a '72 Monte Carlo (1st Generation) Sure keeps the women with their golden shovels away..... Been single for 39 yrs now. No kids either. Ahhh the lack of drama at home. Oh, and this Icon picture is surely not me.
@@-OokySpooky- thanks, really appreciate this
Shift hard from 1 to 2 to 3 .83 Chevy pickup
