The Truth About TDS

  • Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in water include inorganic salts and organic matter that dissolve during water's journey from source to tap. While TDS levels don't inherently indicate harmful contaminants, their types are crucial. High TDS in your drinking water could be beneficial minerals or it could be toxic pollutants.
    Multipure's water filters effectively remove harmful contaminants while retaining beneficial minerals. Understanding TDS and using quality water filters ensures safe, clean drinking water without losing essential nutrients. Multipure offers a range of NSF-certified filtration solutions to maintain optimal water quality.

    Good video, but you leave us back to square one: What is (or are) the best way(s) to test for water safety?

  • @peterpiper487
    @peterpiper487 Před 2 lety +31

    This experiment is carried out under the premise that minerals are good for you... which they are IF they are organic minerals. The added minerals he has in the last two example are INORGANIC minerals... which are NOT good for you. You should get your minerals from vegetables because these minerals have already been 'digested' so to speak, by the plants. They no longer have a POSTIVE charge, but a negative charge... which means they are good for you. So the trick to know is that you need NEGATIVELY CHARGED (organic) minerals from plant... NOT positively charged minerals from rocks that they have traveled over during their journey over land, underground, in springs, etc. The BEST water (rainwater) has a zero reading on the TDS meter (unless you have caught it in a dirty container). However, let it rain for a few minute before catching rainwater so that the rain has washed all the pollutants out of the atmosphere. I have been using a water distiller for over 12 years and it has improved my health tremendously. Distilled water has a zero reading on the TDS meter.

      Peter Piper - the point of the video is to demonstrate that a TDS meter does not measure if there are harmful contaminants in the water. Some water filtration products use these meters to lead customers to believe that any level of TDS is harmful. I'm not really qualified to comment whether organic or inorganic minerals are better - I'll leave that to other experts. Thank you for watching the video though.

      so you're saying that water filters such as Pro One and Berkey, that leave minerals in the water, are not good? I've always drank reverse osmosis water, because my belief is that you should get your minerals from foods, not water. But I can't install a reverse osmosis system in my apartment, and can no longer lug around bottles of water. So I bought a ProOne system because it removes 81% of calcium, at least. I only want calcium from food for sure, due to a propensity for kidney stones.

      Actually ZERO TDS is bad for you to drink, if your doing it for decades and its the only thing you drink or your an infant. But its not lethal, and it wont immediately cause problems(unless your an infant), but you need to make sure its ONLY WATER(as you have seen NAIL POLISH REMOVER HAS 0 TDS). You need to understand, your body had both intracellular fluids(fluids inside of your cells) and extracellular fluids(fluids outside of your cells), both needing different types of minerals. When you drink water with ZERO TDS, your body cannot absorb any mineral. This causes the minerals outside of your cells to move away from the crowded cells to an open expanse of ZERO MINERAL WATER, that causes the minerals inside your cells to literally rip your cells open, as the minerals move out out your cells basically in the path of least resistance.
      SO in tern, drinking water with no minerals actually causes your cells to literally explode, as the ZERO MINERAL WATER steals the minerals from your cells and kills them in the process.
      DID you know over 75% of all TDS is actually the good dissolved minerals that your body needs, and the 25% are harmful minerals and most stuff that the TDS Meter doesn't detect is actually lethal......

    So the lesson here really is about the health relevance of TDS. Filters will lower both healthy and unhealthy inorganic materials. Using a filter may be recommended for some people who use well water with higher lead and arsenic levels. But it's always an individual case- and if you are not using treated water you should get your water tested by a lab to determine what contaminants are present (if any). This infomercial doesn't endorse that, and fails at due diligence. Zero Water does removes particulate compounds like lead and arsenic (and healthy minerals you get in your diet) , but do your own research.

      It’s proof that TDS is not an end all be all when it comes to safe drinking water. Just because something has 0 dissolved solids does not mean it’s great drinking water. Chlorine, for example, is not great for drinking. It is known to cause kidney damage and cancer when you drink it long term. However, it is not measurable by TDS rating. It might not be removed through the ZeroWater filter. And there are some TDS that you WANT in your water, such as potassium and magnesium.

    Human sense of smell and sight is also very important in what water is safe to drink on the surface level. Nail polish remover has a strong odor , like chlorine or ammonia or gasoline. All very deadly liquids no one should drink and also should avoid prolonged periods of inhalation. TDS are mostly heavy metals or metal chemical elements such as Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Aluminum (Al), Arsenic (As). Using a TDS water tester specified for testing whether metal elements are present in a glass of water contaminated with nail polish remover is not a good test. The particular TDS water tester that comes with a Zero Water pitcher does not claim to test for bacteria in water . Not sure if this person is using a TDS water tester that is included with a Zero Water Pitcher. Reading instructions and manual disclaimers always help inform as to what a product is capable of performing. I do not believe this person is trying to mislead anyone and appears to be attempting to give some help. There are also bacteria sometimes in water sources. "Beaver fever" (Giardia parasite) is one such sickness that can occur in water. I agree that testing the water that is used for drinking is important. It should be also noted that understanding what use a particular water tester or water filtration system actually removes should be understood before performing a test. Example. Animals usually use sense of smell before drinking water. Of course PPB (Parts Per Billion) regarding metals in water might not be the understanding of an animal, be if an animal smelled nail polish remover in their drinking water source, most likely the animal would avoid drinking it. Finding a water tester that can check for TDS and bacteria and man made compounds like isopropyl acetone, methyl ethyl ketone found in nail polish remover would be really good.

      @@angiepattillo3599 I usually recommend Waterdrop to everyone. I’ve had nothing but great experiences with their systems. You want a tankless RO system even though they’re slightly more than a traditional tank RO system-they’re so much more efficient and there’s no chance of secondary contamination from microbial build up in the tank.
      I live in a apartment and was still able to install a tankless system-you’re just required to drill a single hole in the drain pipe that can be easily patched, though I wasn’t able to install the faucet fully, but I believe they sell countertop tankless RO systems as well that don’t require a normal install.

    I've been buying Arrowhead spring water and also the crystal Glacier Spring Water I recently bought a Home Forest TDS EC & TEMP Meter Tester. I tested both of those Waters and they're really high up in ppm PARTS,PER,MILLION
    red like >😡500 which I thought was good water, even my sink tap water and my refrigerator water with filter is also in the red I have always stayed away from purified water thinking it was dirty so I bought a couple to test Sam's Club purified water was at a level 22 ppm PARTS,PER,MILLION
    Costco's purified water was 17 ppm PARTS,PER,MILLION
    and another store brand of purified water from Winco came at a level 4 ppm PARTS,PER,MILLION.
    So now I have to regroup and get purified water but I have bought the reverse osmosis water that comes up super clean as well testing PPM at 4
    But the refrigerator water filters Everydrop 3 don't work it's ppm PARTS,PER,MILLION it's TDS >500😡
    Everydrop is 50 bucks I'm not buying anymore. Now I'm gonna test the ice from stores and my frezzer.
    But I be buying more of the reverse osmosis and Winco brand water.
    I live in Arizona hard water here I also have a water softener.
    So if the TDS Levels in water is 500 PPM according to the EPA's maximum contamination level, why would I want to drink anything that still has some type of high particles in it even at 500 when you can find other sources that's a lot more cleaner. They sell water filters for Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerators when the filter number is so high they're not getting no more of my money I'm keeping my coins.

    How can you say "high TDS" when the light comes on when it comes on when it's above zero and the only zero water could be the distilled water. Tap water has 125 and pretty much most waters you will test will have above zero, so to me this measuring tool is absolutely useless. Even if it's over 200 it doesn't mean the water isn't safe to drink. Any mineral water will have over 100 TDS. I don't understand this at all. And the nail polish remover probably doesn't have any minerals in it or heavy metals and therefore shows zero but it's toxic to drink. So what good is that indicator? TDS doesn't show presence of chemicals or toxins.

      Thank you for your comment! You are absolutely correct on your observations. • @kentonjones2190

      @Bez Nervoze RO does indeed remove a lot of contaminants, but nothing (outside of sophisticated lab equipment) removes everything. One thing RO excels at is the reduction of TDS. The Berkey's contaminant reduction claims are dubious at best, and typically overstated. No, it will not remove TDS, and may even likely increase it.

      That's not what he's saying. He's saying that TDS is basically meaningless because the particles detected might be either good or harmful. There's no way of knowing with just a TDS reading. A glass of water having zero or one hundred TDS does not let you know if it has harmful substances or not because many hazardous substances are not detected by TDS. He also points out that zero TDS means the water is depleted of minerals. Of course that you also get these minerals from your food.

    • @Le_Sourpuss
      @Le_Sourpuss Před 3 lety +1

      @@dJ.kNiGhT23 That's the thing. The TDS doesn't let you know if the water is good or bad because it doesn't identify the particles it detects - It can be a lot of inocuous particles or a lot of harmful particles, or even a lot of beneficial particles (in the case of minerals). To know if the water is good or bad the only solution is to find a lab which can test your water for quality. In my country, at least, the tap water I drink is regularly lab tested (govt norms) and the test results are publicly available. You would need exorbitantly expensive lab machinery (such as a mass spectrometer for instance) to actually identify the chemicals in the water yourself so the only solution is to hand the job to a lab, which has that machine and more and people who know how to use them but, generally speaking, if it's tap water, it's govt tested so I wouldn't worry with testing unless it's obviously bad. Look for information about your tap water with local govt.
