    I would usually have had a lake trout video from Lake George out by now but I lost some footage on my first trip which meant I didn't have enough to share sooner. A common theme for this year is slower fishing, having to work hard for the fish and dealing with a lot of wind!
    I've also been hear a LOT about people going through the ice this year! One of my good friends was one of them and 2 other people who follow our channel messaged me about falling in this year! PLEASE be safe out there and get a float suit to protect your life! I just got mine from Striker Ice.

    Try a teaspoon or so of pink windshield wiper fuild in the hole when temps are like that or I drill a few holes around the shack and use the slush to Hold down the sides and that stops the drafts

      Yeah... it's fairly common. But when you get the days where they chase and crush all day you appreciate it so much more after having tougher days.

      This takes me back too. On schroon lake and otsego lake( Cooperstown, NY) I had it happen to me at times too😅😊 even in depth between 25-50 feet. But their nature on how they hunt and able to see them chase makes the experience even more exciting, meaningful and memorable.

    Wow! When that wind blows it looks like you’re up in the Arctic Tough day but you did get some to the hole. I can feel your frustration as they follow the jig quite a ways then they just lose interest all of a sudden. The Baileys did work for a bit. Lol. Still a great video and a great day out. Beats sitting on the couch. Keep up the great videos! And be careful out there! Tightlines!

    I have had a lot of fish chase for about 20 feet and then drop right off. They are motivated to chase down, but only up for 20 fr or so. I went with a smaller set-up and it helped a little. Any other recommendations when it continues to happen over and over again?

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Před 2 lety

      I definitely have days where I get lots of chases but only a couple of bites. When they are not biting I drop to the bottom and try to get them off the bottom a lot. You saw in this video I missed one doing that. Scent is always a good idea too and I try to make my bait look as natural as possible. I also have other baits at the ready to change things up. If they're chasing but not biting change something up and see what works.

      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Před 2 lety

      I'm not in tune with that area of the lake. In general ice has been good and is thick this year and despite a few warm days with rain is holidng up. We have cold weather now through the beginning of March so we should have good ice for a while. I don't want the snow that's coming though... I hate having snow on the ice.

    float suits are ore than just the float. Mine and my friends suits (all strikers) they are made for ice fishing. The pockets, the hood design, warmth for stationary fishing. The proverbial sitting on a bucket in -15F i wasn't cold in a full Striker predator suite. under garment was polyester and a poly sweater, on Schroon lake NY. I was hot after the mile walk... all zippers open to variable amounts. Striker outfit, and gloves with korker boots. If anything it's been to warm even. I like it cold so YMMV. (your mileage may vary). The climate suite for the extra money is worth it over the predator and hardwater.

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah.. definitely. It is really warm for those terrible days. I thought I would heat up more on the walk out and back but I really didn't. I got the Climate version and love it! I can kneel in water and never get wet. It is highly padded for comfort too.. and yes, it has tons of pockets! I really like my suit a lot!

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah... that is definitely the trick... especially this year! I would go as realistic as you can... I like the 4" keitech swimbaits because I think they look like smelt. I use a scent like smelt oil or you can tip your jig with part of a minnow... and don't be afraid to adapt your approach... when they won't chase try bouncing bottom a lot. I had to do that on this trip for sure and it got me an extra bite. Change up baits too if they won't chase and move holes a lot of if you aren't seeing fish come by often enough.

  • @marshallkise6852
    @marshallkise6852 Před 7 měsíci

    I love the tutorials and footage good man🦾🦾🦾. I'm curious. Is there a reason why you prefer medium- medium light rods instead of medium heavy - heavy action rods? And whats your prefer amount of jig head weight ( oz) to use on all your swim baits and tubes?

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Před 7 měsíci

      I really go with Medium action rods... I only had one medium light. I want enough back bone and length in the rod to get a good hookset on a fish 100 feet down but a soft enough rod to be forgiving when they're thrashing around at the hole! I would go with a longer rod that I do but they won't work in my shanty because the shanty is too small and since I pull my shanty by hand I'm not getting a bigger one! 😂😂😂 I usually use 3/8oz jig heads but I am trying out some 1/2 oz tungsten jig heads this year (if the lake freezes). Tungsten is heavier so I get the same size head and hook but more weight in them!

    • @marshallkise6852
      @marshallkise6852 Před 6 měsíci

      I see. Really understandable. Medium actions rods has been an all around adequate inland big fish blank. Parabolic but back bone from large perch to lake trout. Seeing this reminds me of my time spent in Schroon lake ( left side Clarke island) and lake, Otsego ( Cooperstown, ny,/ glimmerglass state park) in my earlier years. Love the lure chase part but most of all just understanding the nature of this animal is worth even more. Definitely miss my diving days around Diamond point, Rogers rock, North Bay and glen Bernie region.

      What lb braid do you prefer to run as the mainline when targeting hard fighting lake George Lakers? What's the largest lake George Laker you ever took through the ice?

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I think I use 15 or 20# braid on my rods. Lake George is not known for big lakers but it is known for its numbers! I think the biggest I've caught there is around 29". Any time you land one over 27" it is a really good one for LG!

    • @marshallkise6852
      @marshallkise6852 Před 6 měsíci

      For inland lake trout any time an angler gets a nice one between 25-34 inches is still considered a gorgeous fish. Even at that size they still fight for their lives.☺️😝💪💪. It would not surprise me at all as long as it goes well, lake George Lakers will not only be abundant but bigger within 5-8 more years due to this species being a slow grower. But still a blast. For those who are hole hoping outside the shelters I am hoping to test a 40 inch medium blank from 13 infrared( either the red foam blank /cork blank. Both have screw reel seats) company on walleye, big perch or big pickerel around the lakes where I live. So far it has balanced bend and plenty of backbone on the bottom. Between $17-$25.00 depending on shipping tax, it's a nice starter to cover inland toothy predators.

    So when you are using your fish finder you obviously need a special transducer on your fishfinder for ice fishing is that correct? How does the fish finder see your jig?

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Před 2 lety

      I actually have 3 sonar units 😂😂 The one is this video, Humminbird Helix 7, is my main unit. The kit I bought came with 2 transducers... one for ice fishing and one for a boat. My original Vexilar FL-18 (flasher) is made for ice fishing and has an ice transducer. I also have a Garmin Striker 4 which came with a boat transducer but it can easily be used for ice fishing. The key is making sure the transducer hangs perfectly straight down. All of these devices pick up your jig very easily... even when you're fishing a tiny jig for panfish.

    • @joecruse4531
      @joecruse4531 Před 2 lety

      @@WhiteDogTrailCompany So you try to align the jig up with fish Image on the sonar? I’m assuming the jig and the fish are not exactly lined up perfectly but close to each other.

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Před 2 lety

      @@joecruse4531 The sonar doesn't show anything about horizontal position (is the fish close or far from the jig) but shows what depth it sees something in water column and it can easily distinguish multiple fish and lures. The sonar is projected in a cone shape so the deeper the water the more area it covers. With the technique we use, when a fish shows up you take the bait away like a fleeing baitfish. The lakers will typically give chase and if they want it they eat it while the bait is on the run. I leave my lure about 10 feet off the bottom and when you see a mark rising up to check it out it is a laker. We start reeling and the idea is we want the lower line to catch the upper line (lake trout catching the bait)... and when the lines become one you expect the bite! So fun!

We never left the shanty until dark and by then the lake had a highway of snowmobiles that we had to get across somehow. We almost got hit about 3 times. The snowmobiles couldn't see us through the heavy snow. We were flashing lights at them but it made no difference... we were literally dodging them. • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Před 2 lety

      So... in general they are good on Lake George. Other lakes did not fare well in the warm weather and rain (I've heard bad things about Sacadaga and Saratoga). You have to be careful around pressure ridges on Lake George though. If you're going to cross be careful, use a spud and pick your crossing wisely. In general, Lake George has 12" of ice in most places.

    You definitely reminded me about how dangerous ice can be... I was looking at a beaver removal job up around Cossyuna and the the ice was definitely thick.. So I was getting an idea of what was going on, dams, bank dens etc.... And I stepped onto the ice over a beaver run... 14 inches of ice to a 1/2 inch in one step. About two weeks before that a guy went through around Binghamton checking beaver sets. He got out but when he got back to the truck he had a heart attack from the shock.
