    We do have specific terms in Shona too :) from siblings, family members and wedding terms, it's semi-long (especially if you're on a phone)
    = SIBLINGS =
    sibling = hanzvadzi
    sister = hanzvadzisikana ("female sibling")
    brother = hanzvadzikomana ( "male sibling")
    older brother = mukoma or bhudhi
    older sister = taita (ndau/karanga), sisi (shongrish) or wakoma (standard)
    younger sibling of same sex = munin'ina
    younger sibling of opposite sex = munun'una
    =Family Members=
    family = mhuri
    relatives = hama
    bloodline, line of descent = dzinza
    male ancestor = tateguru ("tate" is "father")
    female ancestor = teteguru ("tete" is "aunt")
    grandmother = ambuya or gogo
    grandfather = sekuru
    father = baba, bambo or tate
    mother = amai (or mai, mhamha, mhai)
    son = mukororo, murumbwana or mwanakamona
    daughter = mukunda or mwanasikana
    nephew or neice = muzukuru
    cousin = kazi (shongrish - there is no cousins in Shona, they are siblings)
    mwanakomana and mwanasikana are more terms of endearment, almost like saying "my baby boy" or "my baby girl". Mwana is child, while -komana (boy) and -sikana (girl).
    father's brothers = bambo (father)
    father's older brother = babamukuru (bamukuru)
    father's younger brother = babamunini (bamunini)
    father's sister = babakadzi (aunt/female father) or tete (aunt),
    In Deep/Old Shona father's sister was also called "sangadzi, samukadzi, bambomukunda or babamukunda". The prefix Sa- is for any male person, whilst Nya- is for women. Example "Samusha" would mean "male head of the house", whilst "Nyamusha" is "female head of the house".
    mother's older/younger brother = sekuru
    mother's older sister = maiguru
    mother's younger sister = mainini
    = Wedding Terms =
    friend = shamwari, mungani (Chindau)
    kin = mubiyangu (my kin), mubiyako (your kin), mubiyedu (our kin)
    true/best friend = sahwira (friend of the deepest part of your heart)
    girlfriend = chimoko (or musikana wangu)
    boyfriend = chikomba (or mukomana wangu)
    fiance (guy) = muroori
    fiancee (girl) = musvitsa
    bride = mwenga
    daughter-in-law = muroora
    groom = muroodzi
    son-in-law = mukwasha or mukwambo
    bachelor = tsvimborume or tsvukachin'ai
    old bachelor = tsvimborume hora
    bachelorette = ?
    old bachelorette = ?
    brother-in-law = tsano
    sister-in-law = muramu
    mother-in-law = vamwene
    father-in-law = vatezvara
    wife = mudzimai
    husband = mwamuna or mamuna
    widow = shirikadzi or chirikadzi
    widower = pfunda or pfundarume
    virgin = mbonga
    OTHER RESPECT TERMS
    Mr, Sir = bwana, changamire
    Mrs, Madam = bwanakadzi, shekadzi
    Master = tenzi
    Mistress = tenzikadzi
    Lord, chief = she, ishe
    Chieftess, lordess = shekadzi
    Prince = muchinda/muchanda
    Princess = Mamoyo or Chindakadzi/chandakadzi
    Queen = mambokadzi
    King = Mambo
    Emperor = Bwami/hwami
    Empress = Bwamikadzi/hwamikadzi
    Miss = muzvare
    Young woman = mhandara
    Young man = jaya, jaha
    Midde-aged woman = ambhuya (not ambuya)
    Middle-aged man = mudhara
    Old man = mutana or harabwa/harahwa or muhora
    Old woman = chembere or muchembere
    Teacher = mudzidzisi
    Preacher = mufundisi
    changamire is also a term for the leader of warriors or an army (in deep/old shona usage), it's influenced from the Arabs we traded with from the word "amir" or "emir" like in emirates, meaning "commander of an army" a chief, or prince. chang-"amir"-e.

  • @freelanceteaching1641
    @freelanceteaching1641 Před rokem +3

    I’d like to add that similar to xhosa, shona has different names for the aunts on your mother’s side and father’s side as well.
    Tete : is used for you father’s sisters.
    Mainini/amainini is used for your mother’s side it means “little mother” this how you refer to your mother’s younger sister/s
    (If you think of the word kancinci in Xhosa it makes sense)
    Maiguru: means big mother this is how you refer to you mother’s older sister/s.
    For the uncles :
    Your mother’s brother : is Sekuru
    The reason for sekuru (uncle on mother’s side) and sekuru ( grandfather ) being the same ) is because you are considered a grandchild to your mother’s clan and not a child per say. They lower you in rank as you are not part of their clan.
    Your father’s younger brother/s is : Babamunini
    You father’s older brother/s is : Babamukuru or Ba mukuru.

    That Zim girl is still learning Shona. She isn't familiar with basic words. Best to research and rehearse before shooting.

    Mmm the Shona girl is quite lost. Maybe she's now a bit out of touch with real Shona. For relatives we have exactly luke the Xhosa lady explained. Different names for different sides of the family and depending if they are older or younger to your parent. Anyway good try.

    Shona translator was very poor. Absolutely awful translation. These are the Shonas who want to identify themselves as South Africans and have sadly lost their own identity. Very sad a whole grown woman can't translate basic Shona. Nxa!
    1.Molweni (heboi) ninjani (makadii)... no need for henyu.
    2. Ilwimi (rurimi or ndudzi).
    3. Igama (zita - singular)
    4. Mna (ini). Inini is used where emphasis is need.
    5. Brother is hazvanzi in Shona
    6. Sister is sisi.
