- I'm sorry, I just had to do this. I love this Vengaboys song. How can you not be happy when the Vengabus is in town?! This is a 90s hit. Let's have a look at this Dutch classic together and really examine the true meaning of this song. I think you'll be surprised to learn about some of the hidden truths within in, disguised by excellent choreography.

That first lyric reminds me of When the Going Gets Tough from Billy Ocean.
Yeah seconding that.
Yes!
Thank you! That was going to bug me all night.
Spot on.
Came here to say just this... 🎯
Justin going through his phone eliminating songs it could be is so relatable.
I think the rip in his shirt is a kind of metaphor, a look into his soul, he's most vulnerable and exposed like his arm pit covered in hair like the tangled webs we weave...or something maybe.
I saw the Vengaboys live (accidently). I went to a nightclub in Mallorca, and they were the special guests. It was followed by a foam party. Jealous?
Mucho :-)
Si :) extremely
Yes.
Had a foam party at my university freshers ball with Urban Cookie Collective playing….. i think you win
@@MikeTheYokel did you lose...you key?
Congratulations, Justin. You have somehow managed to redeem the “Six Flags Song.” A Nobel Prize is in order.
They ripped off the lyrics for Boom Boom Boom Boom from Baldrick's war poetry. Justice4baldrick
What I've learnt from this is we absolutely need a cover by the Darkness. Make it happen :D
That's a really great idea 💡
Need an equivalent band to the brilliant No Way Sis.
I believe he specifically said the song wouldn't work if done in a "guitar way".
He literally said in this video how bad of an idea that would be
@@mrbig1022 well that just makes me wanna see it more...
I'm only three minutes in and I need a break from laughing. Come on, it's Monday and we all needed this.
“Walking with all the enthusiasm as someone disposing of a bag of dogshit” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
What a happy accident to have recently found Justin’s CZcams musings. “Going through depression - it’s something we go through - we will come out the other side. Happiness is just around the corner.” Thank you.
Same - I’m loving having stumbled on Justin’s musical musings. That who would you invite to dinner if you could ask anyone question.. Justin Hawkins is there!
What the world needs right now is Justin.
When I awoke this morning I was unaware that what I would need to get me through my day was Justin Hawkins covering the Vengaboys acoustically and on the fly…turns out this is exactly what was required.
I would love to see Justin do a few full on acoustic covers TBF
The verse of this also has a "When the going gets tough (the tough get going)" melody
Definitely- The verse is very similar
agreed, I came here just to comment the same.
Exactly. It's Billy Ocean almost word for word.
3:37 Billy Ocean - Going Gets Tough
7:31 Cyndi Lauper - Girls Wanna have fun.
Mash those bangers on the Vengabus and happiness is surely just around the corner.
I was thinking that as well about Billy Ocean. No idea where he got Kylie Minogue from!
I worked with a guy who was in his 70s when this came out and he LOVED it. He said it reminded him of when he lived in St. Croix and musicians would play whilst walking down the streets. He'd jam whenever it came on.
being new to the guitar I love the way JH just listens to a tune and recreates it on the guitar! genius.
Justin is elevating you tube one upload at at time. We love you Jussy!!!
🥺
That takes me back to Euro Trash, I used to love that. BTW love this podcast, your ability to reproduce riffs always astounds me, you have a fabulous talent.
Podcast?
In my defence. I’m am of a certain age, ( probably 20/30 years older than you). My understanding of the technology is only a little better than the terminology. I’m blond and elderly. I don’t really stand a chance 🤣
It kind of is a podcast. It just hasn't been released as one. Just ignore them Karen!

I used to DJ back in the late 90's/early 00's and I had a banging remix of we like to party, it used to fit in well at the start of my hard house sets!!
Don't worry, I got right back into the guitar and good ole rock n' roll with the advent of trance music! I was off my nut at the custard factory in Birmingham having a great time when all of a sudden this trance tune came on, made me feel like I was at the funeral of house music and put me on such a downer that I left 3 hours early and sat in the car on my own and finished off my biscuits!
That was a bit of a tangent!
Ah when trance was cool. I was right at the age where I should have loved it, I tried, but I just couldn't.
This song is one of my guilty pleasures. So glad that Justin talked about it.
Next song to analyse please, Cheeky Girls Touch my bum? Surely the meaning of life is hidden somewhere in this song? 😭 Brilliant
In the interest of research...into the breach lads... :-)
Billy Ocean-"I,ve got something to tell you,Ive got something to say"Complete lift from thr Romancing The Stone soundrack. When The Gping Gets Tough.I hope I'm not too late to the party:).Love your show and content Justin-please keep it going.
Yes, Billy Ocean. Just what I was coming on here to say!
I literally laughed out loud on the tram watching this, and everyone around me thought I was a complete weirdo. Thanks Justin
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I never thought that I'd spend an evening watching a professional musician trying to deconstruct a Vengaboys song on an acoustic guitar. I'm beginning to question my life choices (and also the output of TV broadcasters).
😂
When on the party bus, nothing else exists in that moment. It's just the music, the movement, the good vibes. We all need an escape from life's demands, so join the party and bring yourself back to remembered bliss. And just think - you can play the song anytime to enjoy the sense of freedom in being carefree.
Justin is happiness! Unconditional love for this channel. 👍
Your sarcasm is so vital and fresh 👍
This was used in the Six Flaggs Old Man Dance commercial!! Very upbeat & catchy! Great one Justin, thank you!👍🏻😊
The melody line you play at 5:35 reminds me of Redbone's "Come and Get Your Love" 😄
When the going gets tough - billy ocean.
“I’ve got something to tell you, I’ve got something to say”
You’re welcome.
"You see that Vengaboys?"
"I am aware of them."
"That's your best group ever, that is."
My wife and I first heard this song on our vacation in Puerto Vallarta many years ago. Love it!
I didn't expect this one to be so much fun. Loved it! 😄
Favorite quote: "I mean, there's nothing clever about it - it's just brilliant" 😂
I just read you live in Switzerland in order to be close to your daughter. This is really beautiful! ❤️
Never apologise. This is amazing, absolutely made my day
You sir are just awesome. That's all, have a great day.
Happiness is just around the corner. Your insightful videos always make me smile, so thank you x
This song made me wince in ways few other songs could achieve. But after watching this and hearing Justin talk with so much passion for the Vengabus...I'm desperately trying to find my Oyster card so I can jump on.
The thing about the Vengaboys is that if you split their songs into Choruses, verses, and instrumental bits, they’re all basically interchangeable with each other which makes them wonderful to DJ with from personal experience.
Da Formula Works
"adorned with the daubings" - love it.
My fav is the scene in the war documentary “Restrepo” where the guys are all dancing to Gunther and Samantha Fox singing “Touch Me”
(We used to slam dance in Wales in the guard shack during the Libyan Crisis)
Thank you very much Justin, I have realised how much I can underestimate a song. An absolutely riveting analysis, I wil go out looking for the "the just around the corner" epiphany! You made my day, thanks again!
The melody to me sounds like the first part of the verse to Billy Oceans When The Going Gets Tough.
That’s what I was thinking.
You’ve saved me saying the same thing.
Definitely!
You are a total pro critic huge respect Justin in analysing music.
When I was in the US military and when stationed in Kuwait I watched a lot of MTV UK and other music video stations. I was hooked with their first single 'Up and Down'.
When I was finally sent back to the states I still remember the look on the face of the airport record store cashier in Ireland or England (forget where had a change over) when I bought the Vengaboys , The Wildhearts 'Endless Nameless', and the All Saints self-titled. Mind you was wearing some death metal related shirt (think it may have been an Earache label shirt) and the customary US military haircut.
what years? I’m looking for a video that was on Mtv Europe @94-95 that had visuals of Dresden
@@searchindex3438 Sorry, though I was in and out of Middle East, I was in a headquarters company so we were always supporting something from 94-2000 my longest stay was in '98 and don't recall any vids with Dresden footage.
🤣Absolutely brilliant, I love the way you can swim the depths of a 1/2 inch puddle.
Reminds me of a lot of things.
From Kylie- cant get you out of my head.
From Savage Garden in one of their demo songs "Magical Kisses" there's a bit at the end "Hey woman how bout it, your magic kissing now" almost exact same music phrase.
From a old 90's Mexican TV host and narrator; Paco Stanley, he had a bit with a sing-songy chant "Que lindo soy que bonito soy, como me quiero" also very similar.
I think it's an absolute treat to se your loving this poppy pop out haha. Love it
Much love to you Mr. Hawkins!
Justin dancing with the Vengaboys tunes will live in my head rent free for the rest of my life! 🥰
Justin knowing all the words made my day
Thank you Justin. This unexpected and entertaining review has made my day.
No need to apologise, I love this song. It was interesting watching this video after the August Is Falling one from a few days ago. In that Justin was talking about how the band tap into universal themes by making their subject ultra-local, singing about something that happened in their hometown; it transcends geography because the listener can relate to negative or heartbroken feelings wherever they are in the world. This is the same but with happiness instead (just around the corner!) because the beauty of the Vengabus is that it can seemingly turn up anywhere on Earth at any time, just like joy.
One of the few channels where I hit like before I hit play. Always a treat.
Justin, you got us fooled for a moment. I believe this is one of yours 'BE NICE' series. I vaguely recall you mentioned in your past videos you're not a fan of Vengaboys. Well played...well played. Looking forward to see the Darkness in Perth, Australia next month!
I love that you are always so positive.
"The Vengabus is really shifting" 😂😂 don't know why but I laughed so much at that bit!
I think the song you were looking for was "Too Many Broken Hearts" by Jason Donovan...so kind of Kylie by association.
Although it also sounds like "When The Going Gets Tough" as well.
Yes! More Eurodisco analysis! It's great fun!
Y'know I've always believed writing a pop song this good and timeless is its own craft that doesn't get the respect it should.
Never thought I’d hear this song again 😂
You're wearing my favorite shirt again... I own a short sleeved shirt that's shares an uncanny resemblance to this one... love it
Hi Justin, my wife and I love your videos and we can’t wait to see The Darkness next month in Wellington. Question for comments day: what is your all-time favourite opening guitar riff?
Cheers Rob!
Yes Justin thank you, hell ends and after that; happiness is just around the corner. To never lose hope and faith is such a powerful message thanks man you're an instant cure for depression.
ps was forced to coverband this and just turned the volume down on the guitar and make silly suggestive moves while mimicking playing. It was great fun!
I've been watchin the videos of this channel for some months now, and Justin always looked familiar to me.
I Just read a comment mentioning The Darkness and then It all made sense!
Lol!
No dislikes ! Meaning 2.2 k people made in on time for the Vengabus ! Thanks Justin for handing the tickets !
Really enjoyed -outdone yourself on this one! What could be overlooked, was ripe for droll deconstruction but also upliftingly positive
YOU ARE AN ABSOLUTE LEGEND JUSTIN! I think we could be friends. They call me LEGEND and i'm a NOBODY!..
It's the classic Billy Ocean "when the going gets tough".
Loving watching your casts every night whilst doing the washing up...before I know it it's gleaming fresh
I think I must be Workingto Seethelight at the end of the Vengabus, thanks again, Justin...
Devin Townsend does a great cover of this.. with a fun video too.
HaPENIS is just around the corner🎶
“I’ve got something to tell you
I’ve got something to say” is out of “When the Going Gets Tough” by Billy Ocean that’s what that but of the song put me in mind of.
Saw the Vengaboys in Inverness about a decade or so ago, was such a fun time
This song always makes me smile,,, when it finishes x
Illegal Beach Party shall be my new surf punk project name
After arriving for a year-long high school exchange in Japan, about 300 students from around the world were in dormitories together on the edge of Tokyo. One room was about 30 boys on tatami floors, and as I woke around 3am to use the restroom, an Australian friend's computer started playing Vengaboys. Apparently most students were either too fast asleep from all the travel, or just didn't want to say anything, but I asked him about it before breakfast. He completely denied it while it was definitely from his computer, the only device that was in the sleeping area (this was early 2005 so no one had phones that could play full-quality music). I was like "Dude, I don't get why you're denying it!... It's kinda funny, but even as a metalhead I honestly love that music too!" XD
It is sad when people feel the need to be embarrassed about something they listen to. I listen to some right random stuff. People sometimes laugh, but I couldn't give a damn
The melody at 5:12 is a dead ringer for (and it took me a while to place it), "Gitchee Gitchee Goo" from Phineas and Ferb. Love that show.
Found this channel by accident (maybe it was recommended by CZcams, not sure) and I'm not particularly into rock music (though I did buy Christmas Time on CD single back in the day... awesome track) but thoroughly enjoying watching Justin. Very cool guy, very entertaining. Keep riding (again) Mr Hawkins 😄
You vibing to the song was adorable. ☺
Thank you for sharing. As always, your analysis is spot on and gratefully received.
You have helped me gain a respect for this song that I never thought I’d have
My daughter was three years old when this came out and played it to death. Dancing along like a lunatic. I think I have PTSD with this song 😆
This information will be investigated.jesus Christ

Good stuff thxs again Justin from AZ
Justin, you are too fun! Thanks for covering this blast-from-the-past. Growing up, I lived on music videos. I remember this and Boom Boom Boom Boom playing constantly on a particular channel (The Box - anyone remember?) when I was probably around 10!
Loving the Grados.
Perfect headphones for The Vengaboys and all the great rock and roll you listen to.
Hello Justin,
I just watched a piece of live performance by Uriah Heep in 1973. Dave Byron reminds me very much of you in his physical appearance and style of frontmanship.
Keep up the good work!
❤I STILL LOVE VENGABOYS😂🎉 This is one of the happiest songs on the planet still. A few years back I went to a goth nightclub, and the DJ put this on, and EVERYONE was on the dancefloor jumping up & down together with glee and it was the best night ever 😊 The VengaBus is for everyone😂
Hey JH, that's an awesome shirt. Respect it for the gem it is and get it mended.
Everybody's waiting for a Günther video 🥂
Maybe other hits fom ding dong song analyzed? tutti frutti summer love and teeny weeny string bikini have guitars on it!
You could even keep chrismas song for... chrismas 😁
Hi Justin! I love your „Grado“ headphones!
Got a pair myself, so approve your comment! 😃
Thanks now this song is stuck in my head argh!!
Music was used for a Six Flags Great Adventure commercial, which is an amusement park in the states
Those 90’s pop songs will stay with me forever.
Hey there! First time viewer.
The line "I've got something to tell you, I've got news for you" (and the whole first verse, really) is a callback to Billy Ocean's "When the going gets tough (The thought gets going)" 💚
Yeh thats it, and boyzone did a cover of it
Hilarious commentary, I was very distracted by the extra armpit ventilation wondering if it was a rip or a feature of your shirt.
Oh man, this song used to do my head in, couldn’t get away from it back in the day. It was played non stop 😐
I mostly remember this song from the Six Flags commercial with the dancing “old man” here in the States.
Ahh who would have thought the guy that penned "love on the rocks with no ice" is a comedic genius? Love your content sir.
The lyrics are very powerful now that you mention it. If you do happen to find yourself driving through Hull, happiness is just around the corner.
Ha! While on tour in “Europe,” I had the distinct pleasure of playing to a crowd of six people (four of whom were staff) at the Adelphi. There was a snowstorm, the opening band cancelled, and I broke a string mid-set. That said, I’ll always be grateful to the city for giving us the Housemartins.
Literally made my day. Thank you kind sir!
After listening to Justin play the song through the guitar, I've come to a realization that the Phineas and Ferb song Gitchee Gitchee Goo has the same melody as the Vengaboys😂. The more you know~
Funny and informative analysis. 👍🏻 The Motown bit you were talking about sounds like Come and Get Your Love by Redbone (and prob some other songs I guess)
