In 1984 I was listening to CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) radio when they interviewed a very young woman singer from Alberta who was on her first tour. She was quirky, a bit hyper, and caught my attention. She told the interviewer that she'd always felt a connection with Patsy Cline and in fact thought she was probably Patsy reincarnated. Her band was called The Reclines for that reason. Fascinating. That weekend I was having glass of wine with a friend with a friend in a downtown venue, when they started setting up for the evening performance. We were free, so we decided to stay, not even knowing what we were about to see. It was kd lang, the young woman from the radio interview, and I have NEVER had an experience like that in my life. She was a bundle of energy, dancing, singing, doing costume changes onstage including into a wedding gown and then in that gown jumped on tables and danced and sang. All the while the vocal peformance foretold this person who you see in your video, younger and less polished but already a jewel and bursting at the seams with life. I am so lucky.

Not only is she an absolutely brilliant torch songstress, she so incredibly humble. My own personal top 5 female vocalists of all time.

The most powerful female voice I've heard with unbelievable control. Love how she looked upward and mouthed the words "thank you, Roy."
Her and Whitney I think are in a special place in female vocals, they are so iconic, when you hear them you know who it is immediately.

kd was in a movie called salmonberries and she sings this haunting song from the movie, 'barefoot'. it is beautiful and she howls like a wolf in it. her best country work is from the shadowlands album with owen bradley but i love her 'torch and twang' album too. one of her first tv appearances was on johnny carson singing 'three cigarettes in an ashtray' and blew everyone away. it is here on youtube somewhere.

I beg of you please watch her first solo version that she did in tribute to Roy at the Songwriter's Awards. That is more emotional because he had just died. His widow Barbara was in the front row. kd FELT like crying when she was singing it TO Roy. I saw it live when it aired and knew without a doubt that it was the best performance I would probably ever see in my lifetime. I have seen her twice live and she is AMAZING.
Loved your reaction. I envy you because I cannot discover her vocals again. It’s like religious experience. You could not pick a weak version of her covering this incredible song. Her voice is unmatched in power and emotion. kd lang is one of God’s gifts to the world.

Yes...I love this version, too. In 1963 I was 13 and spent part of the summer at my grandmother's house in Vermont. My uncle, who was 6 or 7 years older than I, played a lot of Roy, plus Timi Yuro. I've loved Roy ever since...I remember exactly where I was in October of 1988 when I heard he had died. Timi was my favorite female singer for decades, until I started listening to Billie Holiday twenty years ago. I'm enjoying your AJ reactions!

I was introduced to KD when she appeared on The Late Show with Johnny Carson singing Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray... he later claimed she was one of his favourites.... it's still one of my favourite performances of hers and it's almost 35years old. I'd be curious to see your reaction to that song.
She didn’t only do a tribute to him. She did a duet WITH him before he died.
