The box came open during shipment. FedEx is shitty and they don't attempt to repackage... Unlike UPS which actually will attempt to repackage and ensure contents. If UPS looses your package it either got lost in the miles of belts/conveyors/shutes, or is damaged beyond repackaging. Sometimes the sender doesn't even respond to UPS's request to reship a customer's order at the expense of UPS. YES... UPS attempts to pay for damages to contents that are damaged in shipment.
Hi mjd! I really like your vids.

This is a scam ,some knock off .
Gateway was epic back in the day .
Kyriakos The Awesome Teenager Edit: I think the i5 10300h will do well with the 2060 but I feel like the i7 10 series if it has one would be better. I assume it doesn’t have a Ryzen option either?

The 10$ Gateway Windows 10 Machine - A retro rarity or rubbish?
spoiler alert: Rubbish.
No way is anyone going to even remember this next week.
I have 2 gateways from 2009,
They are missing both 1 gig of ram...

Gateway was the last PC my father had before passing away in 2009. I'll always remember fondly this brand.

and thats how these companies will take advantage of your love for your father :(
My Gan Gan had a gateway
I've gotta admit, even if the computer sucked; I do admire the attention to heritage with the cowprint box.
Also: more recently, Gateway updated their actual website to completely cut off mentions of it's Products and Shopping tools and it is now strictly for support, driver downloads and a history page.
When the package thief takes pity on you for your choice of laptop.
Exactly my thought 😂
Exactly what I thought. Someone decided it wasn't worth stealing 🤣

I was going to comment the same thing.
Now we just need "compaq product USA"

I'm utterly disappointed in myself.
What about Compaq US Manufacturing?

You know, in a way, this is actually pretty insulting. There was a time in history where Gateway was one of the best of the best. They brought Gateway back from the grave only to soil its name and make it look weak. To us fans of retro computers, this is indeed pretty insulting. Acer, pay attention to what people are doing to one of your brands and put a stop to this.
What would you recommend for computer manufacturers nowadays? I built my own PC, and I didn't mind it, but it's not something I'm *super* interested in doing again.
@@olbluelips well, building your own computer to me is a very enjoyable experience, but I can definitely understand where you're coming from. As far as what I would recommend, that really depends. It depends on what you'll be using it for.
@@MaoTao well, that's kind of a waste I guess. Could have given it to someone that needed a computer or given it to Goodwill or something. Oh well.

Considering the fact that the shipping label was covered up by the flap, I have a feeling that somebody opened it and closed it back up after it got close to its destination. That package has definitely been tampered with. I've ordered a ton of stuff from Walmart, and never once received a box packed like that. I'd have refused the shipment looking like that, or at the very least, document it and send a complaint to both Fedex and Walmart.
Worked at Walmart in a previous life. While I cant stand the place I can confirm their shipping standards are better than that. Looks to me like your package got searched in transit I've seen that happen alot from the shipping companies and even post office.
But if it was searched by fedex wouldn’t they of taped it back up?
@@bixbabble3935 not always some just open everything up an throw it all right back in and move on. I do admit usually they do throw in a card that says item had to be inspected.
backslashxy1 but still you would think it would be taped instead of the box being folded. It’s like if your bag is checked at the airport and your suitcase comes back on the conveyor belt wide open not zipped up.
Yeah, you can even see the tape on the top that was cut, that tape wouldn't be there if it had just been folded originally. Combined with the actual laptop box being ripped open as well, this was clearly opened during shipping. Either for legit reasons or otherwise, certainly wasn't shipped in that condition.
GenKumon I would call FedEx or Walmart or both
Nice to see that THX means _absolutely nothing_ now.
It really never meant anything besides being a “peace of mind” label for high definition audio. It was pretty cool when select DVDs had THX demos, which has become sort of a meme.
THX select II (ultra) still means something. But I agree they should not put their name on trash products. Maybe something like "THX certified - basic mobile sound" to certify phones/Laptops for having an at least somewhat ok sound.

I paid $2400 for my first Gateway computer in 1995. I loved that machine! How far we have come.
This isn’t Gateway coming back. This is Gateway getting the Disney treatment. A larger company is using its brand image and logo while making its corpse shuffle about for a bit.
You mean Nokia treatment? I mean those Nokia-branded devices are not as great as the true Nokia one or even that already have Microsoft brand on it
@@muhamadrizkyananda Disney revived Star Wars but its just a shambling zombie of what it used to be.
@robloxguy453 Well maybe, their current feature phones series are doing great and I actually liked them, but HMD Nokia are only doing great as OG Nokia/Microsoft Nokia for their early/debut devices, well the current one just feel like some random phones with Nokia brand slapped on it. And even (idk this is HMD or not) Nokia's new Booklet aka laptop but it's actually just random laptop that purchased the brand license similiar with this Gateway one.
Their devices doesn't have much selling and unique points that interesting enough and price to performance make non sense especially in my country. Like they are just selling nostalgia. I do miss the unique design and form factor of OG Nokia.

I've always wondered why Acer never used Gateway as a lower end, more affordable computer brand that could be sold at Walmart or Target. That's what Gateway was as a company initially anyways, so why not take advantage of it? Thanks for another great video Michael!
I agree. That name has to be good for something. People still remember it and back in the day, for a short time at least, they were a pretty well respected brand. I remember Dell and Gateway being competitors in the custom home PC market back in the 90s. Dell figured out how to move on. Gateway not so much.
They just sell it as Acer, because it's a more popular brand
@@flame2385 Seems like it's still popular enough for a random chinese brand to want to use to make their laptops somewhat recognizable. Although, their designs don't seem to come even close to CHUWI's.

Cause acer IS the low end brand. Gateway should be thier luxury brand
I remember when everyone wanted a gateway laptop. We would even rush over to the computer lab to make sure we were one of the ones using the laptops instead of the old desktops.
I remember being all excited when the Gateway "Cow Boxes" showed up at our house.
My parents kept theirs and we use it to store Christmas decorations. What a lovely box

I had so much good memories back 20 years ago at my grandmothers house in Nashville by playing on her Gateway computer. Overall Gateway was one of those good PC brands from the 80's and 90's that faded away in the mid 2000's like Packard Bell, and a few others.
Keep it in the box in mint condition so in 30 years someone with a retro computer CZcams channel can unbox it 😉

This is essentially a windows 10 Cromebook.
Yeah it looks very similar to my 4 year old Acer chromebook.
This instantly makes it better than even the $1000 pixel book because it can run applications that don’t run on an android phone or inside of chrome
@@victoriamorrison5454 Im pretty sure you can run WINE on Chromebooks.
@@Isopromptyl yes, Crossover Office is available for ChromeOS. I have the new release but I haven't installed it yet.
I have a similarly spec'ed but older Dell Venue (11?) tablet/PC. It's very handy for typical functions, looking up things, watching video, or anything where you might need a PC rather than an Android tablet. If this Gateway's build quality is as good as it seems it would definitely be useful, especially after slapping a less resource intensive Linux distro on it. Doubly so if you can upgrade the memory.
That’s exactly the same with current Nokia phones. They have absolutely nothing to do with Nokia. They are cheap generic Chinese phones but they bought a license to use the name Nokia. Many well known brands sell their name to being put on cheap ass crap devices.
I have a cute story.
Right now I'm watching this on a computer (duh) that has a "Gateway 2000" logo on it. It's not really a Gateway anymore. It's what was left over from a broken donated machine. Over the years I've swapped out, changed, upgraded, and replaced so many parts that it no longer has any Gateway guts inside, but the case is still here. There are so many "auxiliary" random holes drilled in it (lost the cover many years ago) for accommodating so many different parts that "just didn't fit right" as I modified it over the years. I think this was supposed to be a server tower at some point. It has room for two power supplies, four 5.25" cdroms, a 1.44M floppy (oddly enough I have still have one installed and actually working), and four internal 3.5" hard drive bays. It's gone all the way from a 486DX to a present day AMD FX-8302E eight core.
That’s really awesome! It would be cool to build a modern system in an old PC case like that.
I work for FedEx so I can add a little relevant information.
Walmart packages are a bit prone to coming open during shipping. The paper tape doesn't always hold up when loaded with other packages on a trailer. I've personally taped up hundreds of open Walmart packages.

As a former walmart associate, that's definitely unlike what we usually receive. Especially if it's a walmart brand (I would group this in since it's a walmart exclusive laptop) we often deal with a ton of products within boxes within boxes. If anything, that's a lot better packaging than what we receive, since we receive laptops just in the laptop box, not in a standard brown box. If I had to hazard a guess, someone tried to steal it but may have been caught red-handed by FedEx.

My very first computer was a Gateway in 1999. It had a Pentium 3 processor. I'm pretty sure all the ram and storage numbers were measured in MB... This beast ran on dial up. We had AOL and the whole 9 yards. I remember we ended up putting in a 2nd phone line for it because my mother didn't like not being able to talk on the phone while we were using the internet.
I also remember before we got the 2nd landline, we had some type of program on the computer that was basically Caller ID and it would tell you when and who was trying to call you. And you could click a button and choose to end the internet connection and allow the call to ring the house. Or you could ignore the notice and stay connected online.
Man, those were some times...
Hi Michael. I have a video idea for you. A while ago, you did a video on trying to get Windows 1 apps to work on Windows 10. Why not try running Windows NT3 apps on Windows 10, and vice-versa to see what happens?
I'd like to see this as well, maybe 4.x apps too.
@The Scoot Not true. You can have some 'modern' apps (not Modern), that may work with Windows NT3. And he's even managed to get Windows Vista apps running on Windows 98...
Any program compiled with a recent version of Visual Studio almost certainly wont work on NT3.. The c run time uses windows api functions introduced in versions of windows newer than NT3. NT3 apps on 10 should generally work fine, unless they to do something like try to execute code from data segments which has been prevented since xp for security reasons.
@@Locutus Tell Michael that if he doesn't do this:
_Resistance is futile._
Can barely run win10 apps on win10 without net and clr freaking out, so can't imagine. Really bad design, impossible to repair the kernel
Baffled that these aren't on Walmart shelves. One would think the whole point is for older folks who recognise the Gateway brand to pick these up.
Gateway was the first computer I bought for my kids and I back in 1999 on a payment system. It was so slow but we loved it. The packaging that looked like cows was cool. We had it for a super long time.
By the look of that box, I have a feeling it was tampered with after being shipped. The tape used to seal the box is on the flaps and cut, no bubble packing is another indicator of tampering, boxes don’t typically leave the facility I work at without packing and a fully sealed box
so its a typical rebranding. Sometimes these rebrandings are quite good. Ive bought some Philco rebrands that are quite good, they have more and better features and overall look way better quality than the generic version. (battery powered screw driver and drill). The generic ones sometimes cheap out too much, so the rebrand usually also adds some quality control and common sense features missing.
Congrats for surpassing 100k subs.
Thanks!
hi 1st windows version i used
With the way this laptop was packaged... It reminds me when I bought a "new" copy of Project X Zone 2. When it arrived, it certainly looked the part, with shrink wrap on it and everything. But when I popped the game into my 3DS, there was some save data on it. And when I looked through the instruction manual, I noticed that some kid had scribbled in the "additional notes" segment in it, saying it was like Smash Bros and stuff like that. Turns out the seller I bought this from had a habit of just taking used games, packing them in shrink wrap and just marketed it as new.
About your initial touchpad issue, I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T430 (2347-DT4) that used to be part of my local school district. I've upgraded it down the road, such upgrades including an SSD. And here's the thing, I've had it hibernate and do "fast startup" on the SSD, and it did wreak some havoc on the touchpad and TrackPoint mouse. When I restarted it though, it was working fine once again.
The screen folds back and the laptop runs the same specs roughly as my 2015 HP Pavilion x360 Convertible. Nice to see Gateway's branding for sure, but I think they could of done it with some better quality products to better represent the brand.
If you think that other brands give more quality for $200 than oh boy, you're so wrong,
@@gorjy9610 Considering I paid $3 for mine, it's a bit better. Although yes, I get what you mean.
This sure is an oddity. I guess they're bringing this back for nostalgia? Honestly just feels bizzare to me, why not just sell these under the Acer name? After all, that's a much better known brand these days.
I also would never suggest buying those garbage $200 laptops, they really can't do anything. I guess you could put a really light Linux distro on it, even then the experience wouldn't be ideal.
A refurbished ThinkPad or Dell Latitude is much better in that budget range for a laptop, especially with SSDs.
@@MLGKid420 Yeah, you're better off buying an old Dell or Lenovo from or newer than 2009 (Windows 7 era), put an SSD and Windows 10 in it and it will be better and sometimes cheaper than these "Gateway" China garbage
I guess they’re trying to use the Gateway brand for some slight recognition as well as to sell cheaper stuff that doesn’t tarnish the Acer brand
Probably they don't want to tarnish the main Acer brand. Otherwise people will use one then thereafter be like, "I tried an Acer once, it was shit".
Pink blue furret :D i like ur profile piv :D
Looks like a simple case of a delivery sorter/security/customs checking the package and making sure it's a computer and not something contraband. It's easy to see someone like that not being careful with the package, instead of the original 'packager'.

Both included free Windows 11 upgrades and are powered by Pentium N5030 Silver processor, 4GB ram 128GB eMMC and free 1 year of MS365. I don't use any 3rd party software, just the internet and usb. The computer so far has far exceeded my expectations. Model: GWTN156-11BK
It's shit with windows 11, barely meets the minimum spec. stuttery mess just trying to play 1080p CZcams half the time. Runs much smoother with win 10, but downgrading breaks the touch screen even if you get the drivers from their tech support.
I got mad and just started using it with Linux, no touch screen. On Linux its a great little web browser and emulation machine.
Good video
Thanks!

Old Gateway was much better.
I remember Gateway ads being everywhere when I was young and I even used a Gateway 2000 machine with Windows 95 before. Sad that this is what's become of the brand.
I had a Gateway all in one with a Core i3-2100 until recently, I do know that they only really died after they released a few Haswell PCs before ceasing.
Moral of the story: DO NOT BUY COMPUTERS FROM WALMART!!!!
I've made that mistake approximately 1.7 years ago. In fact, I'm typing this message on the same laptop I got from there. And let me tell you, they are crap.
Please, nobody buy laptops from Walmart. Even better, don't buy cheap laptops from Walmart for a higher price than the laptop is worth.
@@ITAC85 amen lol
I've repaired too many
I don't buy electronics in general from Wallymart. They have a chronic habit of selling used/returned items as new.
They need to ship it with Manjaro instead of Windows 10. Or at least some Linux distro. i7 2600k system with 8gb DDR3 took 25 seconds to respond to Windows 10 start menu with an old 5400rpm 2.5" HDD out of a PS3. Manjaro however, made it feel like I swapped it with an SSD on the spot. (Arch ftw).
That's not the CPU or the ram, that's the shitty hdd
It doesn't matter what your cpu is or what your ram is, if your HDD is crap and is 5400RPM then you're gonna be experience slowness
It's the Hdd, you should get either a 7200 rpm drive or an ssd.
My GWTN141-3 arrived just fine, excellent performance for the price ($280), had a foam pad over the keyboard and everything, I did a teardown to find out it was running SpecTek RAM modules at 2400 MHz, and included a single SO-DIMM slot. Even though it has an SSD running windows 10, the port is capable of PCIE*4 NVME so you can always upgrade and move their default SSD to the expansion m.2 🤓
Pro tip: compare all the CPU's, make a spreadsheet if you want, I'm finding the best value for dollar is the Intel 1005G1 cpu.
Someone tried to steal that laptop but the the pawn shop won't take a Gateway. LOL!!!
i'd love to get one of these over here in the UK, they look brilliant!
