"If you're smart, you don't take advice, you pay attention." - Dawn Richard 2017
If you wanna be somebody, if you wanna go somewhere...
you Betta wake up and paaayy attention!;-)
kjdnyhmghfvb yes indeed, pay attention and make your own decisions.
chanel charity YEEEEESSSSS!! Come through with Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit
Yes, yes, yes!!!
EXCELLENT!
Can we take a moment to appreciate Nessa as an interviewer? She really let Dawn speak and gave good prompts for Dawn to extrapolate on alot of stuff and she did her fucking research too. Loved this interview. Dawn is such an interesting soul.
this is probably her most sincere interview ever!!! a lot of times she has to "put on" cause a lot of artist in her past interviews have bad attitudes
Alex N-S right best interviewer
I completely agree. Although she was able to expand on a lot of stuff, not extrapolate.
She really let DAWN express. She was fantastic. Interviewers either they do their job or they connect. She connected and clearly was interested in hearing what Dawn had to say.
Yea she definitely gonna do great things in the interview world
I don't know a lot about Dawn but what I DO know is she works hard af and she's naturally talented. That's basically all one needs to know.
Raye Will
#Yup
Raye Will FACTS AND MORE FACTS!!! YOU ARE SO RIGHT 👍
#FACTS
Raye Will she's incredibly talented
people were so worried about her skin, nose, and glasses that they didn't even receive the positive messages she gave!! SMH!!
i dont know what it is with Dawn but i can listen to her talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and still dont get tired of it
shes a really smart woman, thats why she has lasted so long!!!
Life-changing insight into GOD'S expectations of mankind COOLBLAKE.COM
She has an amazing voice...
She's super intelligent and passionate. She's what we miss in a lot of music, artistry.
Dawn is that type sister that brothers should be fighting over, breaking down the door for her to be apart of your life. you know what's funny is that it's women who are on here talking about her appearance. when Kendrick Lamar made that humble video i bet these were the same women complaining like he was a member of the Migos.
Why is everyone being so negative? Y'all are listening to a strong black women that had to deal with racism from black people to the point where she felt she had to change herself. She then self actualized and realized she is beautiful The she was/is and is now an independent artist. She makes music that spans R&B and Electronic. She's breaking boundaries and doing things in technology to combine with her music yet y'all are here hating. Luckily she's reaching her own success and is very successful and is a hard worker. She's an inspiration.
Y'all needa support black women like Tkay Maidza, Dawn Richard, Azealia Banks, Dai Burger, Junglepussy, Tink, And even other indie black women.
Jayy Sonata EXACTLY!!
Trey516 But they never claimed soul. Dawn has a R&B/Soul EP titled Infrared. But you have to remember the Grace Jone's, Janet's and such in the world. Black art takes many forms as long as you open your mind to it. Freeing your mind of the boundaries you create introduces you to a whole new world of black art and black expression.
Jayy Sonata and Kelela
Azealia Banks? Are you kidding?
Why the fuck don't people under 25 understand that *women* is *plural*?
She literally has NOT stopped! She is determined along with the talent to back it and I want her to win. ♥
Such a great interview. She's dropping jewels & great advice. Her art is not for everybody and that's ok. Those who get it are rewarded with brilliant artistry and a genius talent. Hats off to you, Dawn. You're not only a survivor, you're a warrior. Your talent, hard work & hustle will take you anywhere. Keep shining, queen!
it's so true what she said about danity kane fans, as many times as they fucked over the fans if they said tomorrow they was getting back together the fans will come running
Major Key Alert: If you're smart you don't take advice, you pay attention - Dawn Richard
DAWN is fuckin DOPE and REAL. Black Girl magic! She's intelligent, beautiful (inside and out), multi-dimensionally talented, and passionate. She is a true artist! We need more individuals like this. Like she said, we need to get behind these dope ass black women and supporting them. Stop with the shade, follow that wave >>>>>>
Thanks. Support and/or continue to support Dawn.
Dave Knight 💯
Dave Knight wtf is black girl magic
Chase Mathews you aren't a black girl so you would never know.
Marlea Burke i know. i am a young black man who hates seeing the term black girl magic used in regards to successful or accomplished black women as if its a rarity. you guys are selling black women as a whole short when using that term. thabks for not answering my question
I love her energy, you can tell that she's living in her purpose and doing what she loves. The way she speaks and her whole vibe is really giving me female Lenny Kravitz. I salute this sister for being her authentic REAL self in a world full of people who don't understand originality. 💯
THAT is the best damn way to describe her, if one was to compare her to another person in the music industry!!!!
That Bad Boy curse is serious
Hasani O 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
HAHAHAHA! I always say the same
Hasani O she hasn't had the curse. shes successful in her on right.
*own
Hasani O that was a typo but thanks for the correction.
Such a great interview. Can't wait for more people to recognize, not just Dawn's genius, but the all the other underrated "Brown girls". She spoke some REAL truth & people are going to either get with it, or stay focused on dumb shit.
DawnRichardNC ya know Dawn keeps saying she didn't know she had to put on this personality for tv but I truly understood who she was when the group unveiled their name and said that Dawn drew DK out. I was a kid living in the ghetto going to an art school for music with a book full of games synopses hoping to be understood. I'll always be disappointed that each girl didn't allow what they brought to the table to exist in this dope space in comparison to Dawns solo accomplishments but knowing Dawn is sacrificing so much for the eclectic brown kids out her is comforting and exhilarating. Best interview of this era!!!!
She is so different from most artist. I love the passion in her work. It's like you can feel the passion radiating from her. Proud of you Dawn! Black Heart was the best!
Dirty Money was lit, they had some bangers 🔥
Bobby Brown like 3
You obviously didn't hear the "Last Train to Paris" album. High key modern masterpiece.
Bobby Brown sweet
Bobby Brown whole cd LTTP was lit
Ryan Gordon facts
All the negative commentators need to get a life. Dawn just talked about being yourself, loving how unique you are. Also talked about black girls in tech, and not fitting the stereotype, and still going hard, BUT all you seem to care about is her shades and her look..please, y'all are PATHETIC. Anyways love this interview, very inspirational for me esp as a black girl who is currently learning computer programming and had doubts. DAWN continue to do your thing
KayBassie This interview was 100% unfiltered. She is giving you her truth in the industry and I love it. She looks great, and I love where she is at with her music. Of course people will talk trash about what they don't know. Her music is great, and I would love to see
her get noticed more mainstream, but her time will come.
KayBassie AMEN 💯
KayBassie did she talk about the plastic surgery?
KayBassie i myself recently notice when black men put us black women down it's the 1s your speaking of . if youre not falling out your clothes, talking about penis, being loud, trashy or doing everything to bring black women further than what we are like our black women predecessors you're not worth their time. everything is about appearance or money. this is why it's so hard for those like dawn to become well known and respected like their no talented counterparts. you see it all day on social media , especially here on YT where they're co-signing low budget females and unbecoming behavior. i stopped trying to understand or respond to it. its the dumbing down of black women.
KayBassie well #noshade if that was the case why did she get surgery to fit that very stereotype
Fact is some people say they no longer like her because she isn't out here being some basic R&B singer. Dude those waters are overcrowded. Dawn's electronic sound has always been present and I love that she followed that path because its authentically her. She isn't trying to fit into some R&B or Pop cookie cutter roll. She is out here being herself and people unfortunately don't get that style of art. They think that sound is for weird white kids. And it's because their ears aren't tuned to anything different. When our radio stations are inundated with whack rap and the same old sound you have to venture out to allow your palette to taste something different. Dawn is and always has been thee truth!
Naturally Latrice
👏👏👏
Naturally Latrice GIRRRL YEEES! Dawn has always been unique and so very talented and just so naturally beautiful. I always loved her realness and voice and sound. Her writing game has been on point. She didn't have to sacrifice anyone to get to where she is. Or step on anybody's toes. God bless her. She been one of my favorites from Danity Kane. I always took to her personality. That's my girl always! 😍😍😍💗💗😇👏👏👏💪💪💃💃🔥🔥💞💞🎶💯💯💯
I so agree
She looks like a regular sistah respect ❤💓💕💖and wishing her well on her journey.
Dawn just has a magnetic presence to her . It's so easy to get drawn into what she says.
I Said What I Said exactly
Nessa is honestly one of the best Interviewers in the industry, she's so likeable and has such great Charisma!
Diddy milked them while they were hot
Gerald Jordan and diddy made sure to milk dawn first!
Jona than Yea but Diddy is still on top and richer shady business
Paco Yea she was the most talented out of Danity Kane
dawn is def the beyonce of danity kane
Diddy drinks only the finest of breast milks
Damn. I never really cared much about Dawn when she was in DK, but home girl articulates her thoughts so well and seems so down to earth. 👌🏽👌🏽
She was in Dirty Money also
It's so refreshing to see someone hold an intelligent conversation and not just shaking their ass
Well it’s an interview.... most of those go this way
I'm so proud of my girl Dawn!! She's doing so many amazing things!!! She's such a beautiful soul and amazing artist! Love you Queen!
Awesome interview. This is the backside of an indie artist. This is how you maintain a successful career. You can learn a lot from this. She is everything, nothing but love and positivity.
true
Louis Cianciotto Shes Not Indie.... Wtf... She's Electro House. When She Says "Indy" Artists She Means INDEPENDENT ARTISTS.
Louis Cianciotto EDM also sorry (House/EDM/Electronic)
Helplessshi yes. Indie artist. Independent. . I know this.
Louis Cianciotto yyyaaaaasss
I got mad respect for this girl!
DK3 was a fire ass album tho. They can pull each others hair out and still come out with a good ass album
CBookem I'm so MAD because that album was so good!!!!.....GEEZ!!!!!
I've never seen this side of Dawn
I followed her in all through DK & a little in DM and then I kind of just stopped. But then I looked at this & wow! Her insight & just the ways she views life, her career and everything is so beautiful. She's grown TREMENDOUSLY & I'm in love with it. I'm gonna check out her later stuff. She has a beautiful voice. She's amazing
dawn was always a really sweet girl... I remember taking dance lessons from her mom Mrs Debbie then later dawn as she got older and piano lessons from Mr Frank... really cool to see her doing ok
what does that have to do with what I said???
Penny Pinkston REALLY? Her voice and long winded-ness are irritating.
why y'all hoes being some haters??? grow up and re read the thread... If you are a black female why not support the sister instead of tear her down... I swear the internet makes me sick sometimes
P Auluknow go over to them dumb blondes
P Auluknow You sound like a hater
I love Dawn. I've always rocked with her. Her voice is very special as Diddy once said back in the day. Her music and aesthetic are flames and I fuck with them heavy. I'm glad more and more people are catching on.
Dirty Money was EVERYTHING!
tbarret320 faxx
soo she did dirty money to pay diddy back for all respect of buying her out her previous contract. thats wassup
The growth and wisdom this woman has! The woman she became. Such a humble beautiful black woman. Love you Dawn. Thank You for staying true to you❤️
I never really heard her New Orleans accent until I heard her say "ok" in this interview lol. Dawn is a dope artist. Very creative and unique. 💯🙌🏽
lol I love how her New Orleans accent comes out when she gets annoyed/mad
I love the fact that you never gave up on your dreams in the midst of hurricane Katrina the obstacles your family faced I mess with you the long way and pray for you more success that you can handle
Dawn is gonna win! I love it.
Dawn one of the realest artists out there in the industry
Lowkey, brought tears to my eyes when Dawn spoke about feeling like an outsider as a Black child and labeled as a “Oreo” for having different interests and don’t get me misconstrued I love my Black/African descent people we just need to understand that as being Black we are versatile in every form.
I think she looks fine and I really enjoy what she's talking about. Both her background and what she's working on for the future are really interesting. Also she listens to Abra which is a plus!
I love Dawn and always have loved her. She was so gracious when I ran into her and Q from Day26 @ the mall in Maryland. Years ago. Yes, she's been making music and never stopped. I commend her. Diddy literally gives everyone two albums and then shits on the artists. I'm glad she keeps going.
Watching this and listening to New Breed in 2019 and it ALL MAKES SENSE. Dawn is the truth and the light. 🤯
I remember when Danity Kane had two #1 albums but for some reason Diddy chose to split up the band and kicked everyone out except Dawn. I never understood that, Danity Kane was and is still Diddy's biggest profitable investment in the last 8-10 years
mikeymike Dawn dumb ass was writing and doing all the work Diddy didn't want to pay for. He used her, maybe even sleeping with her. She should be something bigger than she is. Diddy is a serpent.
He truly is. He sucks all the money he can out of his artists and ditches them, thats why any artist that has signed with Bad Boy is broke. Diddy is the king of 360 deals. His current artist French Montana is broke he gotta rent his jewelry and cars. Idt Dawn was smashing Diddy dont believe she would sleep with her boss to stay under contract she aint Cassie.
It's all because he didn't want them to have a voice; when Aubrey & D Woods felt that clout; they felt like they had more say in the direction of Danity Kane. He will always want absolute control & no one; in this day & age will let a tyrant continue being a tyrant. Unfortunately, that's how I perceived it.
Terrance Prescott Barnes thats crazy I really liked making the band danity kane dirty money and all. He always taking money.
How do we know they were the most profitable? With it being a 5 member group of females I highly doubt. Hair, make up... that stuff cost a lot.
Great interview! I've always been a fan of Dawn she's talented!!!
Danity Kane was dope !
I love her she's so humble and authentic. Beautiful person!
#TeamDawn since DAY FUCKIN ONE!
eyedotzeedotem yassss 😆
eyedotzeedotem for sure ever since making the band. 👌
Great interview!!!! Dawn is speaking the stone cold truth, not just for the music industry!
I’m gonna side bar and say. What an amazing, beautiful, intelligent woman. I love her with her real but still respectful responses, everyone is an individual that shares all parallels. She sees everyone, and as for music I am not a fan of electronic etc, but my girl has still enlightened my ears with this art and still I play her music. Amazing. This woman gets nothing compared to the respects she deserves. 2 piece in the back of a chicks head or not she’s owning her stuff
I'll always love DK cus the music was fire and the dancing on point..... DAWN has a superb musicality mind of artistic expression. I like her alternative sounds that she incorporates through music but her tone comes through best for me with Danity Kane tracks. Super Dope. "If you're smart you don't take advice, you pay attention"!! LORD SHE SPOKE THAT. Trust me when you pay attention you learn the best lessons. Advice is great also but using you vision, ears and EYES so vital. Unfortunate the personalities didn't mesh as well as their music did. Dawn you done great and smashing choreography on a regular. Well done to her.
Welshy King u nailed it👌🏾 I agree
She is beautiful and resilient, being an indie artist isn't a walk in the park. I have so much respect for artist like her.
One thing I get from this is that she is honest. She admitted wrong doings and reasonings. Nothing but respect.
alotta ppl dnt realize that tons of artist make more money overseas with music
Tye Blk yes she should sale her music worldwide
Tia Wessells she does! she tours world wide! been doing this for years ahead of the delayed game!
Mico, The DON oh ok she's so underrated
I wish I kept up with Dawn after Danity Kane and Dirty Money...watching this interview I have so much more respect for her. She is so real and relatable.
*I love her Delivery on the music game... Brilliant... Her voice is like silk to the ears!!!!!*
Im not sure how it matters what she looks like, but this is a QUEEN, the definition of dope, the definition of an artist amazing!!!! I love her, and this interview just proves work well and you'll be good!
True artist are never afraid to share the ugly, because we find the beauty in it. Love u Dawn, for always being open with the truth. It Inspires authenticity!
Dawn new the assignment and she followed it every time. She was not and still not
In it for the fame. Love her energy

I love Dawn's versatility. Her music speaks to so many people. I love her great art. Keep up the great work Dawn Richard.
GREAAAT! Thank you for this. Glad to see her. I remember Aubrey ridiculing her about the pronunciation of her surname etc. Good to hear all she has to say for herself.
That Dirty Money Album still bangs.🔥 I love Dawn's music😍
Sorry but Diddy is a joke. Only good thing he did was put DK together. FACTS.
The fact that she's into or been into the Dance / Electro music scene is dope, a sista with an alternative mind state, I can relate in being different than the "typical black" kids. I'm a definitely look up her music. She's nice.
Corey Harris start out with a tale tell heart
okay thanks. I think I heard parts of it before. The title sounds familiar.
I absolutely love Dawn its good to hear her "voice" real talk she is beautifully crafted
I cannot with this interview!!!!!!! Dawn is giving me so much just by telling her truth. And I just want more Dawn. More of these kinda conversations from ppl period
"I thought of her many of days, to back out. 'Out' sounds good, she's a cute little girl." That's sounds like a verse, so poetic and metaphorical of the dome. Dope.
It’s in her that’s why puff wanted her for both danity kane & dirty money
DK3 was such a bomb album. I wish they could've worked it out because I wanted to hear so many of those songs live. Dawn was always my favorite from the jump, even before she made the group. I just knew that she was going to get in. Keep doing what you're doing because your material is so fire!
I love her music!!! Glad to see this interview.
This is surprisingly amazing and is now one of my favorite interviews. So incredibly dope!
DOPE ass interview. I love Danity Kane Dawn. i cant lie but i respect Tech Dawn cause that girl stay working! #Salute
Regardless of whatever happened with the situation with danity Kane dawn is the true winner of the group because she is the one who has has been releasing the most quality music/ visuals since the group has disbanded.
This young lady is so underrated.... had the opportunity to hear a few of her songs all I can say is I wish you the continued success... Bombs Away!!! Awesome
Dope interview! Dawn is truly something special!
Dawn your a dope an inspiring artist especially for independents, keep the dream alive.
Can we appreciate the fact that she appears to be makeup free 🙌🏾
This was a great interview she's such a well rounded and grounded humanbeing!!!
Awesome interview!! This just shows if, you work hard, & never quit one can see/be successful.
I respect her so much! I am going to look up her music pronto
Her voice is beyond beautiful 💛
Dawn you inspire me so much as an artist, shows so much strength+beauty to create simply because it what you love
I've loved dawn since mtb3 audition! tbh at first i wasn't feeling her music but when I heard blackheart i was in love and started to appreciate her previous material! cant wait for her success to blow!
Corey Cammon me too. That's how it happened with me.
I just like Dawn! So passionate!
This was an awesome, straightforward interview. I love what Dawn stands for. I like how much drive & commitment she possesses towards her craft. The......don't take advice, pay attention......comment was brilliant. I been a fan for a long time, I'm pretty proud of the artist that she has became. But.....some of these comments....SMH....you people are worrying about something that had nothing to with nothing. Why is it so important for her to tell any of us rather on not she had work done? Like who really f#%@ cares? I clearly don't give a damn about that. It's about her musical artistry. Let's leave it there shall we? Worry about your own faces.
I can listen to Dawn all day. How did I miss you in my life? And what I heard in her music is what she's confirmed in this interview. Allllll of those styles in one person. You can't get bored listening to her records.
Yess Dawn with all the New Orleans mentions, beautiful interview 👏🏾
She is so chill.
I dig it.
Her music is so good yall frfr. She is amazing. Open ya minds and get into it. Her tone,runs/riffs,beats and videos. The only black girl in EDMR&B doing the damn thing She is an innovator
Booked my tickets for the London show as soon as she announced she was having a world tour, I can not wait to see her 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Yes, i love your energy girl. You are so natural & so true to who you are. I love that. Very inspiring.
Yessssss, give us life in this interview!
This interview made me loveeeeee Dawn!!
Dawn is mutha! Point blank. She's ALWAYS PUSHING so I acknowledge and commend her for that aspect of her craft and for putting as much work as she does into driving her own creative dream! An inspiration quite simply! Stop living for the fueled hate and decide for yourself to welcome the love that's all around you people. More vibes!
This is Amazing!!! You go Dawn!! I knew you and Aubrey were stars... blessings!! and you shine . Love dainty Kane but I knew you would never stop and I so happy for you. I hope your the next chance and get that Grammy!! Much love ❤️
I absolutely LOVE this interview.. #loveDawn
I love this interview. Nessa is always on point with the questions. Dawn has always and will always be dope. I'm happy she keeps doing her thang. Last train to Paris was a fire album. I appreciate her honesty. I remember growing up I enjoyed alternative rock. My friends would ask "wtf are you listening to?" Like..music bitch. Needless to say I had to cut them off. Stay true to yourself..surround yourself with people who understand you and love who you are💜
How is one person so darn cool?! Dawn has had my love since the 1st Danity Kane album. She is so beautiful and pours her heart onto her work. WAAAY better than most of these mainstream "artists".
I’ve always loved Dawn her dance her eclectic voice and style. She is so dope.
