    Building a case for my zippo in this video. Starting with old steel wire/cable and carefully forge welding it together with anvil and hammer. Once I have a nice big chunk of cable damascus Martin takes it and machines it so the whole Zippo can slide into it. This makes a very cool pattern and protects the zippo! Hope you enjoy watching this video.

    I cut my cable, then just mig the very ends.
    Throw the pieces in the forge to medium red untwist slightly & bang out all the rust/dirt. Flux, retwist if you can & throw back in the forge. Then just stick one end in the post vice & twist at welding heat.. couple times. Then forge weld into bars, stack, repeat until big enough.
    Normalize.. forge whatever piece I'm doing. Normalize again, ht, temper, grind.

    This is definitely a timely video. I just picked up a zippo with a very cool applique, since getting it I've thought about making a pattern welded case for it.

    It's so nice to see somebody push through on a bad day. I was wondering if on cold days, if you preheat the face and dies? It just seems like you're shop is always a little cold, and I'm wondering if that might be hurting you.

    Ps. The little hole in the bottom of the lighter is so you can stick the tip of the lighter fluid in said hole. Just a useless knowledge that some people don’t share but I do💪🏼❤️🤣🤣👍🏻

    Looks like the wire rope you started with is hoist wire rope which is typically performed so adding heat to it could be release that preform as you work it cause problems in it not wanting to weld. Just a idea I could be completely wrong.

    I'd recommend barricade from birchwood casey for the first oil after the etch. Some find good results from soaking in kerosene, but wd40 sucks

    Not a smith here, but I'd recommend hitting that cable harder to begin with, seal stuff up before oxides are able to form deep inside of those strands.
