Is this it? www.google.com/maps/@53.4637905,-2.2868489,3a,15y,186.72h,90.09t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1srweLgfmq-XKBSctXZ_z45A!2e0!5s20080801T000000!7i13312!8i6656?entry=ttu
That antenna actually looks like it's still there in 2023, so it might not be.
Yes! How did I not see that!!
How times have changed. This would be behind a paywall now.
Legend has it, that during cold nights they would broadcast Sir Alex’s halftime “motivational speeches”, as it provided more heat than the gas board could.
Even though I have no interest in football, this is an interesting piece of history.
So that's why the Soviets had that big jamming station...
Love a bit of local radio via what was called the... "restricted service licence" ....although a lot of us also see this as a great "qrp experiment and certainly the signal was not restricted...
Some clubs even sold little radios with earphones fixed on the channel ....great archive lewis 😊
😂
I used to be a member of two hospital radio stations that had LPAM licences. One was on 1413AM & the other on 1431AM. The 1431 station had an AM50 transmitter located in Sheffield, and a similar antenna but the pole was fibreglass. This was supplied to us by Radica.
Had a similar set up from Radica on 1566AM for Touchdown Radio in Bradford, broadcasting the then Super League Rugby team Bradford Bulls' matches. Enjoyed the live radio aspect of this though trying to manage the only two studios we used at the time of BCB when a game was on turned out interesting in the engineering side of things in getting the signal from the centre of Bradford!
What is a hospital radio?
Nice piece of nostalgia, I'd never heard of this station and I guess no-body had unless they lived near to Old Trafford. I'm imagining a parallel universe where the internet is never invented, United and City start building more and more powerful transmitters, and keep trying to jam each others signals. 😁
I used to listen to it occasionally when I was able to pick it up in Whitefield, especially for the Saturday 3pm matches that weren't on TV. The signal was *very* weak however but still clear enough to follow the match!
Great video! As an American Manchester United supporter and a radio nerd, this is awesome.
Glory Glory Man United!!!!!
Not from the UK but have always been a Man U fan and this was a great story. Thanks for sharing
Crystal Palace FC had a station called Palace Radio on AM, don't know if it's still in operation. I used to pick up the signal from where I used to live in Brixton
I work in Leeds and on my commute to and from work I pass Elland Road the home of Leeds United. They used to have match day radio station that broadcast around the Leeds area. But now I think its all done online now.
I didn't get any on the quiz. Though I'm not a huge sports fan. And not from the U.K., so my performance is level is about right.
This would be an awesome idea for my local club in Australia. Probably over the Internet rather than over the airwaves though. Get some more interest in the club.
When our club started up in the late 1990s, it became a sudden sensation and even had a short-lived TV show, hosted by a sports broadcaster who is now the mayor of the city!
A fellow “radio nerd” checking in.
Never knew it had a radio station. Nice vid lewis.
The 5 players at the end, i need some help...
I think 1 was Jordi Cruyff? Not sure though. 2 was big Pete. 3 Irwin or Keane, I'm going Irwin. 4 Phil Nev? 5 was clearly Becks.
Brilliant - somehow never knew of this station! Always thought Century had the rights for the United matches.
Matt & Jayne were a great team.
I remember it as you always knew you were closer to the ground when you were in range.
I'm a fan of radio, your channel and MUFC,,, triple win... back of the net!.. Siuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
Actually, this LPAM station was a covert message outlet for the Manchester branch office of the Ministry of Silly Walks.
Nottingham forest fan myself i know good work lewis
You always knew when you were getting close on match days when you could pick the station up.
Ah, the glory years.
I'm pretty sure the antenna was on the opposite side of the ground, somewhere around the location of where Hotel Football is now located, if not on that site (as it would have been over canal) but on the edge of the East Car Park? ( between the canal , matt busby way and the A5081)
I worked in and around the area and remember driving past and wondering what the Cap. Hat Antenna was used for, I suspected it was for LP Broadcast, but as football is not my bag I never 'tuned in'. I've just had a root around on google street view on the older images but they only go back to 2008 and I can't see it. It definitely did look like the image at 05:58
Found it! www.google.com/maps/@53.4637194,-2.286142,3a,32.8y,226h,85.51t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sa4jUc-P-lnc0kiqKpUAluQ!2e0!5s20080801T000000!7i13312!8i6656?entry=ttu
If that doesn't work
Drop the 'map man' on the current map on the point where the entrance to East Car Park is, change the map view back to Aug 2008 and zoom in to the south in the direction of the brown office block with the roof of Evans Halshaw Ford dealers to the right.
And it's still there on the latest maps Oct 2023 @Ringway Manchester
Yup. Look for East Car Park E1. In the compound in the disabled car park section is the antenna. Can be seen on Google street view from the A5081.
@jaytee7773 Yeah I Found it 10mins after my initial post and edited it but it looks like the edit didn't save
I think it could be said that the station could be replaced by a stone tablet.
"Is Manchester United winning?"
"Answer: No"
Fans all over the world, 5 mile club radio station... DOH!
That’s because of the licensing restrictions
Thanks RM. a Very Cool Blast from the Past.....GOAL*****
Didn't LUFC have a station as well
