Recent years have shown that it is not possible for a manager to simply transpose the style he implemented with one team onto another. Pep Guardiola had serious teething problems in his first term at Manchester City, before investment in the transfer window allowed him to build a squad capable of playing his way effectively. Presently, Maurizio Sarri is experiencing similar issues imposing the football he became renowned for at Napoli in the Premier League with Chelsea.

@@dani__crocs and they did that because Conte's introduction of the 3-4-3 formation had taken most of the title contenders by surprise. Chelsea was on a record winning streak, which came to an end at the hands of Pochettino's Tottenham. After that fixture, pretty much everyone in the upper half of the table had figured out the style, but that streak propelled us across the finish line.
The very next season, Chelsea was humiliated in the first match by Burnley. And by that time, Klopp and Pep had streamlined their clubs. So a title run was out of the question. With Pochettino's tight grasp on the Tottenham ship and Jose's second season form, we were out of Top 4 at the end.
Even Sarri's playing style gave us the initial momentum, giving a semblance of the three-legged race till October. But the same thing has happened.
The player's mentality is certainly to be questioned. The last moments of the ET in the Carabao cup final had shown the disrespect Kepa had shown towards Sarri and Azpilicueta's apparent absence in the entire matter was dishonorable as the man with the armband.

Chelsea's crossing ability in general is shocking, even (or especially) from set pieces. How do you expect to score against a compact 4-5-1 without utilizing the wide areas? Corners fail to clear the first man. Our fullbacks can't cross, our midfielders don't get into the box enough. What's the point of making overlapping run only to pass the ball back 80% of the time? Way too predictable. Recently there have been more crosses, but the quality is still sub-par, to say the least. Btw Liverpool can load the midfield with 3 box-to-box players and still create more chances than Chelsea partly because their fullbacks are so good in offense

Chelsea lacks quality from defense to attack. They do not have players confident and skillful enough to play a dominating possession game. I also think the chelsea locker room is a bit of a bunch of snakes, a lot of players wanted to leave for ages, and certainly they are not there for the chelsea project, even though I dont even know how to describe the chelsea project by now. It can be a transition period, but usually that is made by buying players and improving the squad, having a strong stable backbone board which I think chelsea dont have at all. Too shady of a board right now, not the right personnel and they are running the club like they are running a falling business. They need to change their approach. @Liam Totally agree. Lack of a PLAN B when shit hits the fan is what Sarri lacks BIG TIME. Pep has atleast five or six ways of playing depending on the oppositions approach. Sarri just uses the same old same old dogshite tacticts against every team. Some times it looks like he only care about that possession stats more than goals and chanches created. Lack of rotation is also a big reason why Chelsea gets countered so damn hard. He just doese the same shit and when he finally succeed he starts braging about how good his tactics are, after about 100 attempts. A premier league team with only a plan A, which doesn't fully work at all, is fucking pathetic. I hope the cancerous board can find some actually good solutions and that the team management board can tell Sarri to have AT LEAST 3 different tactics. Cant play possession football when the opposition sits with 10 men in the box and none of our players can hit a screamer shot from 25+ yards.

Doesn't work? I'm sorry but Chelsea have created the second most chances in the league, and were comfortably 3rd up until January. It's not Sarri's fault that most of the players are just not good enough. They're on course to finish 4th and win the Europa League, a successful season given the expectations at the start. Give Sarri time and some decent players, then judge him.

Easy answer: the club is an oligarchs plaything and the fans at the club are used to instantaneous success.
That success used to be achievable with a blank checkbook in the early 2000s and even up through the early 2010s but clubs have caught on and adapted to the new landscape and so they’re back on relatively level terms. You can talk about tactics all you want but the reality is that the biggest signing they’ve made since Sarris arrival (pulisic) was not even on his radar as a player and was more or less dropped on him because the Chelsea marketing team can sell his jerseys in the US.
This alone explains a lot if you unpack it. Man U is experiencing a similar problem. Business became a large part of the sport when abramovich bought the league title along with the club after his takeover. Since then, many clubs have lost sight of the fact that the business strategy of a club fits in with a larger ethos that the club espouses. Chelsea never really had a culture to speak of, at least not one that created winning teams. So apart from the money there didn’t exist the building blocks of a title winning club. Once the playing field was leveled, these problems reappeared.
A coach as ideologically specific as sarri must be given freedom to choose players specifically for his needs so he can adapt. Instead, he’s received almost 0 support from the club and is crucified for not being able to realize HIS vision with THEIR players. I’m an arsenal fan and even I can see that Chelsea are throwing away a great coach because they’re used to buying ready-made success and not building something that becomes sustainably successful.

Shit club, shit entitled fans happy to be the plaything of a literal mobster, that's the culture at Chelsea.
When the checkbook stops buying success, 90% of their plastic fans will switch to supporting City or PSG, the rest will go back to complaining about how they had to sit next to a black person on the Tube.

The problem with Chelsea struggling to break down opposition sitting deep has been present for the last 5 years. If you look back they have dropped points agianst weak opposition every season. This is a problem in Chelsea, that ALSO SarriÂŽs system has struggled to find a solution for. The later part of your analysis seems valid. That the midfield 3 fails to stay compact, resulting in easy transition againts them. But as someone else meantioned in an earlier comment, the breakdown against City, is probably more of a mental, rather than a tactical. Usually when they conceed, it is because they bring a lot of players forward because they struggle to break down the low block and getting caught on the counter.

I don't agree with the logic that you need to change your formation to *adapt* . That is not true. U can play the exact same formation every week but you can change the defensive and attacking structure and tactics within it because a formation has literally no consequence on a teams style of play. Thiago Motta defined it best saying that these numbers are misleading. The problem is that sarri doesn't change the attacking as well as defensive structure or even alter it which means. That like Mourinho said, they are easy to analyse and create plans for. The space between the centre-half and the fullback (particularly on the left but also right) has been an issue since the second game of the season as pointed out. The biggest problem for me is the fact that jorginho is literally having to make almost everyone In the team into puppets and instruct them. When he is manmarked(which also was tried at Napoli) the other players have not yet acquired the understanding of the system to adjust accordingly and instigate build up like Allan would at Napoli. The issue of the quality of the centre half's is a great spot as they don't have the multi dimensional capacity of Koulibaily who would also help build up. The pressing is also clearly very faulty and they because of the fact that they dont have the physical capability in the forwards to be able to press with the right intensity regularly to win the ball and the tactics aren't perhaps helping solve this issue. Great video guys!!!

Also, he makes too many like for like substitutes and even pep guardiola makes tactical changes to defenders or his attackers based on the opposition and the game. Thus this system doesn't have one so we don't need Kanté in front of the defense. We need him to lead the press, which he's doing and he's been great. Also he's very underrated in the technical sense. This myth that we should put Kanté "where he belongs" (when he's been playing CM next to another DM in any other season and was never lone DM) is just counter-productive and won't HELP or benefit the team at all. 3 games to go and we're currently on 4th. not all is lost tbh. if we finish 4th and win the europaleague I'll be very happy with this season.
we had a lot of problems this season, which is why we have been struggling a bit. for one, I think "sarriball" is a flawed system that lacks variety and flexibility. it might have worked in italy but premier league football is on another level. then there's a lot of out-of-form players who kept starting due to sarri refusing to rotate.
I think the transfer ban (if it happens) could be a blessing in disguise. it would mean that hazard probably stays while great young players return from their loan and put pressure on the "older" guys. abraham, clarke-salter, mount, etc. these boys are hungry and will fight for their place in the starting line-up. this passion is what we need and what I wanna see

    • @DayzAhat
      @DayzAhat Pƙed 5 lety

izzojunior He has too be rigid if he wants to implement this complete 360 overhaul of Chelsea. We've been a defensive, counter-attacking orientated team for years, and in order to transition he needs to be rigid. The predictability is due to the players not performing as well as they should or players who haven't adapted yet. He's also to blame because he doesn't make in-game switches that effect the game but if Plan A isn't working well enough how the hell do u expect them to have a plan B. His system is about penetrating the dangerous areas, quick movement, quick one-touch passing. It will take time.

It isn't only his fault. If you remember, both Guardiola and Klopp struggled in their first season, because they didn't had the player they needed. But then, they bought some and now they have created two amazing teams.Same goes for Chelsea. If Sarri is given the money and time to buy some new players and create a team who can play Sarriball he will create a great team. But with this tranfer ban,I can't see this happening.
Anyways, sucking him is not a solution.Whoever manager comes,he won't do better because of the tranfer ban.Let's hame patience.

Spyros Paraschis okay but they adapted with what they had until they could get the squad that fit their style. Sarri isn’t even open to trying to change tactics even when we’re losing bad that try another method wouldn’t make a big difference. That is the only thing that worries me about him honestly.

impressive how a good chunk of this was devoted to analysing the 'defensive phase' and even the left side is highlighted, yet no mention of the reliance on hazard causing the defensive shape to constantly be imbalanced. also quite interesting how sarris failure to adapt was highlighted, but nothing about jorginho was mentioned, BUT a picture of kante was displayed in reference to hollywood passes needed to unlock deep defenses, which isnt his role, its jorginhos! the same jorginho who is constantly picked despite bad performances and is the reason that the opposition scores so much cut backs and headers

Overall your analysis is on point but there are a few salient disagreements imo.
First of all, our centre backs have been able to pick those 'hollywood' passes from time to time, just no consistently enough. David luiz to Pedro v City at home comes to mind. I think the more concerning part is as you put it, the structure of attack and midfield which then leaves midfield in question and the defense vulnerable. More often than not when caught on transition, Jorginho is too easily out muscles and out run.
Also besides the movement around and towards the ball, there's also a problem in supplementing the attack using our full backs. Napoli's full backs had been very important in providing some good crosses. However Azpi seems to have really struggled in the attacking phase this season, Alonso has been poor and Emerson while better than Alonso, also just doesn't cut it. The over relaince to sometimes play through the middle means one needs to rely on crosses from wingers and full backs.
