  • You can't attach the Manfrotto 323 RC2 Rapid Release Plate to many tripod heads without an adapter. This video shows you how to make that adapter.

So this was an awesome video and exactly what I wanted to do but I just don't understand how you can make things like this easily using Imperial measurements. All these fractions blow my mind!

That’s a lot of work to get the plate to do what it’s supposed to do.

I enjoyed and got some ideas out of this video. First, a 1/2" thick adapter plate is not needed. I picked up some 3/16 x2 aluminium. 1/8" thick should work by eyeball measure after holding the 323 base with a piece of 3/16 in place.
McMaster-carr has socket head captive screws that will work, I ordered 1" and they are a little too long, so reordered today some 3/4 and 7/8 so I can fit them without cutting off threads. The socket head is a little too call and might require filing a little off to fit under the 501 plate without contacting the head. The 1" screw i got would work if i had gotten a 1/4" aluminum plate, and is probably too short for a 1/2 in plate. I prefer to keep the adapter as thin as possible, and using a piece 2" wide will fit the width of the 323 base better. I plan on drilling and tapping for 1/4-20 and using one of the existing screws to keep the adapter plate from twisting. and will think about a stud for to keep the 323 base plate from twisting later. I have a nice drill press and a band saw, and have a metal cutting band saw blade on order as i like to keep things neat and professional looking. I probably can use a little piece of welding rod for a stud, or may drill and tap the plate and install a short set screw.

Looks like I have to get the tools out also! Just bought a 502 head to find out that I can't put a 323 on it AND if I mount my Canon 5D directly on the slider plate I can't turn the screw to fixate it because the camera is in the way! Of course I can slide camera all the way back on the slider plate but then the head is very unbalanced. So I have an expensive setup and need a piece of cheap modified aluminium to let it all work together? Come on Manfrotto!

I had the same issue with the fixing screw hitting my camera, pull the thumb screw out slightly and it will turn freely

Surprised no one is manufacturing and selling these (*hint). 323 plates are so much better for DSLR-style video cameras, but you're limited on tripod head options.

    Another way.....
Wow. Lots of hard, awesome work!
Sadly I do not have a machine shop, bars of aluminum to use.
All I did was chop in half (along its belt line) with my Dremel an old Sony USB wall charger which dimensions is an exact fit to the underbelly on the Manfrotto, scraped off the bottom plate paint and epoxy glued, clamped overnight the two pieces. Then I drilled a hole for a bolt to go through and voila, problem solved. Oh yeah, I used a paint stick and the whole thing looks like store bought. Solid to hold my ginormous 150-600 brick lens and DSLR.

You really don't need a machine shop to do this, just a hack saw, drill and tap. But with that said, I'm happy you found a solution the 323 is a great system

What if you move the orientation of 323 so the locking lever is not at the side but at the back. I'm sure it can be mounted on 501, however it's far back not at the front of fluid head.... no fabrication is needed :-)

its what I did, but I could not center the camera so the fluid tripod was not front or back heavy. I cant believe Manfroto does not have a fix or adaption for this?

How much for you to make one of these that will use the brass pin and one the first way you mentioned? How does Manfrotto not have a quick release plate adapter for this fluid head that they can overcharge us for is beyond me? I just got the fluid head with tripod. I love it, but taking the camera off quickly is a pain. I feel i got too large a fluidhead and should have went for a smaller one or something.
