Yes, an old Aussie trick is to add a bit of Vegemite to a stew. you picked that. The other thing that made it Australian was that after WW2 when the POWs came home malnourished from Singapore etc - they used Vegemite as part of the process to bring them back to health.

The thing with Vegemite is that everyone dislikes it the first time they have it, the more you keep having it the more you’ll end up liking it. I have seen rellos from Italy over many times who end up wanting it on toast for breakfast each day after initially hating it. There is a bit of a craze happening of late of having it on pizza, which is not surprising as it goes perfectly with cheese (Vegemite & cheese sandwiches is a school yard staple) hence isnack 2.0 (Vegemite with cheese) which quite rightfully was renamed cheesybite

I don't think it's actually made from the waste/leftovers of beer production, more that the extract is from the same yeast used by brewers.
I've often found that people that dislike vegemite (I love it), often also dislike other salty products like soy sauce.
Despite the salt content (there is/was a low-salt version), it's still one of the best sources of B vitamins (unlike marmite)
And Rob, you are correct, vegemite works great in stews, sauces, and it makes an awesome gravy.

I'm an Australian and I'd prefer to have what "vegemite" is the let over product from. That's probably because when I was a little ticker (school age), I spread the stuff to thickly on my toast, thus turning me off it. It adds an umami flavour to some soups and stews, however used sparingly in my opinion.

Remember, that just like Wasabi, ginger or soya bean sauce, you do not use too much. Just a smidgen, a very tiny amount, about half a teaspoon only on one slice of toast & always use heaps of butter OR olive oil spread to reduce the potency of the spread

Fun fact, vegemite is the best hangover cure around. It's because of the salt, and B group vitamins.
Heston Blumenthal was one of the judges in a cooking show a few years back. The contestants were given dark, light, and white chocolate to make a dessert with. The mystery ingredient they had to use was vegemite. One of the desserts was so good, Heston was going to use it in his restaurant.

Vegemite is good!!! Also Vegemite iSnack2.0 has been relabelled Vegemite Cheesybite after a poll was carried out to rename the product. Vegemite Blend 17 was a limited release version of the spread that was apparently “richer and sweeter” in flavour. I don't know anyone who spread their vegemite thinly; it needs to be spread thick or even better straight off the spoon. Vegemite chocolate is AMAZING!!!! It's like a salted caramel filled chocolate with a hint of vegemite (what more could anyone ask for??? Well except that Cadbury need to bring it back). You'll be surprised how well it goes with chocolate. In our house, we put it in our bolognese to give it more depth.

A lot of people eat Vegemite and cheese. Kraft decided to combine the Vegemite with their cheese spread in the jar and call it I snack 2.0. Unfortunately the ratio of cheese and Vegemite was something like 50 50 which made it completely inedible for snacking the way it was intended. A few people like the combination but most people found that there was too much Vegemite and not enough cheese. It went off the market as fast as it came on.

Putting a teaspoon of Vegemite into a stew just disappears and you can’t taste it. Most Aussies who hate it are children of migrant parents who never knew about it.

    A) I've had marmite and it is rubbish, vegemite rules. B) Any Australian who doesn't like vegemite is just un-Australian and probably doesn't like lamb either. C) Vegemite is also good on a raw celery stick. D) 1 teaspoon of vegemite contains 5% of recommended daily sodium intake (if you're eating more than a teaspoon a day, you're a flamin' nong). E) Vegemite contains no fat, sugar, fibre or protein. F) 1 teaspoon of vegemite contains 25-50% of your daily (4 types) of vitamin B. G) If you drink beer (or in your case cider), don't knock the brewer's yeast, you are consuming yeast farts... :-)
