I was just thinking about how insane it is that all of the band aren’t even 30 yet but they’ve been famous for most of my life. I’m 25, and when I look back at how young they were during the band days it makes me feel so sad for them. I can’t imagine being an international superstar while still being in high school like they were

I'm sure that only one of them was still doing their exams, I think it was Harry. We leave school younger in England you are seen as an adult as soon as you left school however they were given this on a plate they were out together as a group they didn't form this band. Simon Cowell put them together they all auditioned as solo artists. But they were sooo exposed to it all sex, drugs and sex with OLDER women. Harry famously had an affair with Caroline flack who was a TV presenter much older than he was, it was quite the scandal.

I’ve been obsessed with them since X factor, I never understood how people could scream and act so wild to them and treat them like they weren’t even human. Even as a teenager it baffled me. I feel so terrible knowing that it was so hard for them :(

To think back to when Zayn left, for his own sake, and girls freaked out and self harmed over it; it's makes that whole thing so much more disgusting. Zayn was trying to get help and to see what the "fans" (obsessive creeps) did must have made that road to recovery so much harder on him 😞💔

Ally Brooke released a book but it unfortunately went under the radar, but she spilled some tea about the dark side of the group. I remember one part where she stated that someone higher up tried to pressure her into having sex with him. The girls were also heavily sexualized while they were still teenagers. I'm pretty sure the moment Dinah and Camila turned 17/18 is when they pushed a more mature image on them.

Harry also let us know last year in a better homes and gardens interview that they had what was called a decency clause..that said anything they did that management considered " indecent" meant they lost EVERYTHING..(imagine the pressure in that)

As much as I've loved One Direction since I was a child, I'm glad they got out of the group and can do their own thing. They suffered so much since the X-factor days. They went through so much as literal teens in the sick world of teen fame. I hope they can get through the trauma 1D brought up.

Louis never wanted to be the leader, he fought with Liam over character differences, I think. And it’s absurd that he considers himself the least important member when he was the glue of the group. During the interviews you can see how he cares that people are involved and often tries to play and make jokes to make sure that the guys don’t get bored but have fun. He wrote many of the songs of the band and his voice is so particular. I think actually he was the leader but not a frontman, the kind of leader who acts behind the scenes. And not only Harry but also Louis was forced to be painted as a womanizer, I remember there was a time when he was papped every night at some nightclub and then he took several girls to hotels (everything was so clearly orchestrated to be ridiculous)

Actually I think Louis had the least experience as a singer when 1D formed, he got interested in singing much later in life, maybe at 16 or so. I heard him say that in an interview.
And some fans said Louis was represented by the boys to told what they wanted. That made him the leader and yes he was hit harder than any boys.
Also a thing that not many people talk about when mentioning Harry Styles is that Harry was groomed at 17 years old as there was this television host named Caroline Flack (who committing suicide a few years ago) and no one mentions it and it is swept under the rug!!! This just shows how groomed and trapped the guys were when they were in this band (which I was and still am a fan of btw as someone who grew up in that era and I didn't even know about some of this it is truly horrifying and disgusting no teens should ever go through this).

Big industries always have this cycle. I don't know why some people try to pretend as if there's no artist who's controlled of their every move and have to appeal to crazy stans by no dating and stupid strict rules. The more these industries give in, the more entitled and horrendous these toxic, obsessed stans become. ED, sexualization of minors, abuse, overworking.. That's why these artists who are famous from a young age grow up thinking they should stay in the spotlight.

My sister who is a year younger than me was a hugeeeeee 1D fan like tumblr famous bc of her fan account. My mom made me drive her to a 1D meet & greet at a mall instead of letting me go to universal with my bf at the time (lol I was pissed). We were there for hours, there was well over a thousand girls there and I’ll always remember how exhausted their faces were. They all had the most tired eyes and looked overwhelmed. Zayn & Niall in particular were so sweet to my sister, but I felt bad for them. Not surprised there was toxicity behind the scenes.

Children are not developed enough to have these strict demanding schedules or be in the industry. My family works in the industry and all of us kids wanted to be “famous” like Miley, Hilary, Lindsay etc….we were never allowed, we were allowed to take singing lessons and acting classes but not allowed to enter the industry. I remember us kids being so annoyed that we had connections to at least do SOMETHING but weren’t allowed. Now as an adult I am SO thankful I wasn’t. The ONLY responsibility a child should have is to be in school. I understand these kids want to chase their dreams and be “famous actors/singers” but it’s literally not natural.
As a directioner during that time it’s so sad to think about the actual torture they went through, child/teen singers should have better regulations tbh
I would LOVE it if you did a video on Simon Cowell Sloan. I was a little too old for One Direction when they came out, but I definitely am appreciating all of the solo work that each of the members have done. They definitely seem much happier and more in control of what they are doing which reflects in their work. No one should ever had to have gone through what they went through when they were in the band. Especially as kids!
Yes! My little sister grew up on 1D. I appreciate their solo work. My boy band was Backstreet Boys & they went through their own fair share of f*ckery.

I’m very lucky to have kind of met Niall in a club I frequent and getting to see him in his comfort zone with no fans bothering him - me included, which is why I say kind of met him because I really just pretended he wasn’t him and just let he be. He’s was just having a good time with his friends, he seems like a very chill person to be around

I didn't realize when I was younger how exploited 1D were. When I learned about Zayn's eating disorder and anxiety and dug deeper I started to realize they were just machines for their management. 5 albums and 5 world tours in 5 years is just insane. They each make amazing music now
What is worse, I see a lot of directioners who were kids thought is normal and even buy the images they were given. Management knew the audience. Is absurd to think but them giving the boys roles( womanizer, mysterios, funny one, daddy of the group, blonde one) and how to dress is almost like they sell the boys to the fans

Okay so I remember seeing them on X-Factor as I was a teen at the same time, but not into them. Recently started listening to their music fr such excellent talent and so much that they had and could have done with them, if only they treated them better.
It's SAD. I feel so bad for them. They were manipulated, put into situations they shouldn't have. The adults / businessmen around them who should have protected them, didn't.
Imo, Zayn and Liam were the best vocalists, and it's sad Zayn seems to have shyed away and Liam spiralled out of control.

What amazes me is when kids first start off in Hollywood the parents send them off with strangers. They teach their kids to never talk to strangers yet they hand them off to one. Forgive my memory but I faintly remember one of the moms crying and saying how she had to let one of them go across the country to live/tour for months. They were practically babies being sent off into the hands of strangers 😢

We all get to make choices to a degree. It's one thing Louis Tomlinson spoke about in an interview last few years that really spoke to me. He said he has learned that success wasn't comparing himself to others, it is doing what makes him happy. He went his own way. Actually, using them as examples, they have all gone their own way.

I was in University back then and did work experience on the X-Factor the year before these boys were on it.
All the male interns were told to be careful of Louis Walsh (Westlife manager and Judge). We were told he would offer to help you form a boyband and invite you to his home in Ireland to discuss it. We were told DONT GO THERE.

Sloan, thank you for showing more compassion to the boys, especially Zayn in this video. I think some of us, will always have a soft spot for him, because he essentially left, to tend to his eating disorder, anxiety that was winning, and himself. What they went through, we will never fully know, but even with the challenges, they are all doing well.

They had so many songs that it’s completely understandable why Niall doesn’t remember a lot of the lyrics. I recently got Spotify premium and was adding a bunch of songs to my playlist, and when I got to adding One Direction songs, it took me about four hours to go through.
Plus Niall didn’t just sing in most songs he also played guitar throughout a lot of them. So I mean when you don’t sing all the lines and haven’t heard them for years it makes sense
The early songs were mostly written for them instead of by them, so understandable he might not remember all the lyrics.
Also "Taken" was not one of their poplar songs so they probably didn't perform very many times.

I was a big 1D fan since I was 11 years old, I remember my parents used to save money so they could afford my bday gifts related to them, we used to listen to their music in our car and my dad took me to the cinemas to watch their movie so I have a lot of great memories thanks to them so it is kind of sad to know that we enjoyed such a big part of our childhood, teenage years and even adulthood while they were having a hard time.
FIVE was Simon Cowell's first boy band. They were treated just as horribly and encouraged to behave badly as it would keep them relevant.
I love this band and always will… just breaks my heart to hear the torture they all endured. still my favorite concert ever, lucky to have seen them twice with Zayn😍

I was a fan since the X factor days, and I remember a lot of the things that occurred afterwards. Eventually, I felt it, too. It was too much for them, like it was insaneee.
It's such a hard position to be put in. I know all of them are grateful to their fans. But while people grew up with you and the image that you were marketed as, you were quite literally at your lowest and most miserable. It was the most traumatic period of your life. It's like how do you talk about this without coming across as ungrateful or trying to distance yourself from what made you successful? It's like so hard to talk about a past that people remember so fondly but you were suffering silently.

If they do I hope it’s in the boys name and not signed with any contract, they make it a revolution of regaining their freedom and selves so they can still be back with the fans but they have control over the band and their lives now. That would be amazing if they could rebrand themselves like that and reclaim one direction’s name.

So many bands/artists all around the world (especially those who started young) are now coming forward with their stories and those stories all have one thing in common - ironically, they felt the worst while being at the peak of their career. The power imbalance between teenage, highly impressionable musicians and their teams is so wrong as well. Members of some of my favourite bands have spoken about the most horrific things they had to endure for years that we, fans had no idea of. Something has to finally change for the better. Psychological and legal support should be a must. It's so cruel that managements/labels put money above health and well-being of their artists.

Sloan, they actually play the lyrics into the ear piece, not a projector in back. Many artists do it that way. . . Some dont know their own lyrics.. Others it just helps them stay focused on which song while preforming. Kindof nifty, Lil Wayne has written so many songs that he honestly can get confused and not fully remember each song, so he gets the lyrics thru the ear piece. Its quite interesting.

Every time I see 1D now I think that they really are not as close as we thought and that makes me think that 1D fans have forced so much for some reunion to happen and even dare to ask them about the band many times or keep remembering what it was the band, they want a reunion so much and they don't realize that they are no longer interested in what the band was, for them it was a nightmare. It's sad to admit but it's the truth.
I would like the directioners to understand this and stop wanting to force a meeting or whatever.
And I'm not saying that they hate each other or something, maybe some members are still very close friends, I don't know, but clearly they are not interested in 1D anymore and they just want to create their own career without thinking about what happened before although that brought them a lot fame.

I didn’t know this about them….sounds like a horrific experience. It also reminds me of things I’ve read about K-pop groups and the things they have to do to be and remain famous or in the public eye. Just glad they made it out alive because alot of the things K-pop stars got put thru led to severe mental health issues, eating disorders or suicide…shameful terrible industry
Yes, the K-pop comparison is apt. To this day I still think about poor Sulli from f(x), everything she went through before taking her life.

i used to be a HUGEEE fan of 1D and i remember when zayn left. i was thankful i got to see them when zayn was still there and also without him. as much as i was so upset that he left, i feel like i was wrong to be mad cause i see now how much he was going through. I wonder if the same problem happened with little mix cause a member also left that band too and they're under the same management.
Sad but unsurprising, i grew up with bsb, n'sync and all the other boy groups at the time and most of them have sad stories like this.

sloan, thank you for speaking about this. I've been a fan of 1d and their solo careers forever, I think they're the reason why I'm here typing this, because I always dreamed of learning English so I could speak to them someday! it breaks my heart how I'm going to be the same age they were when all of this was happening through them. and they were never given the respect they deserved as a band:( but now they have the chance to do whatever they feel passionate about. I still think about their reunion, but I'm not sure if they would do it, at least not now, but in a couple of years, who knows.
