A job of a coach, like a manager in a regular workplace, is to provide feedback based on observations. The coach theoretically sees things the player doesn't because the coach has distance from the play and perspective that the player, who is in the middle of it, does not. So if the stars are not getting it done, then the coach needs to give them the feedback in order to modify their play in a way that the player will understand. (In other words you can't just scream at the player that they suck and expect them to change.)

After this game, I actually deleted my recording timer for Leafs games. After almost 60 years of watching the Leafs, for the sake of my heart, I'll wait until the playoffs (and I will actually be surprised if they make it) to watch/attend any more Leafs games. Unless of course, they hire a new coach... Not because Keefe is a bad coach, but he clearly has no control/influence over his players. These players clearly need a more "tough-love" approach... a coach who isn't afraid to bench a "star" player in favor of a player who is actually willing to die on the ice for his team (I see Nylander is back to his old lazy ways... no surprise there!). I'm so sick of the team not being ready to play or waiting until the last 10 minutes of a game to actually give a sh!t. This is NOT a playoff team, although it could be with a very different attitude and that typically comes from the coach and/or team leaders. But I can't watch this BS any more, it's just too stressful and frustrating.

As an Ottawa fan, Toronto is so strong offensively it really showed in the first, but once we started getting the puck a little more and sending it deep, we started dominating physically and it paid off. Of course Matthews scores, our D is kinda crap so he can just exploit it easily. Also notice how many chances he denied us by backchecking? None of the other leafs did that, he cant backcheck all 60 minutes himself lol. Makes sense a guy like Bertuzzi got a goal with the way he plays. Domi scored against us last time and hes a gritty guy so makes sense. Also Korpi and Zub are the goats. Also also screw you for ruining Norris goal streak lol

I like how the team is starting to mature to the point where they could strong-arm a game from another team after a rough start. Still having trouble stringing together a full 60 but it’s nice to see it not be a collapse and instead be the opposite of that.
Martin’s getting to the Sens and it’s good to see. The D may still be meh, but the structure is slowly falling into place, the D-men themselves are very talented, so some structure will only bode well.
The Leafs are a great team when they wanna be. They don’t play mature hockey, the two teams are much more similar than you realize, but the Leafs have benefitted from more players following through on plays. The Sens may become the more mature team by the time the dust settles on the season.

I think they need to trade Nylander and get some much-needed talent back on the blue line. But of course they won't trade him, and in fact, Nylander will get his 11 million dollar contract because I believe Shanahan/MLSE will ride out the short-term cap pain until Tavares contract is up. Then Tree will try to get Tavaras to sign a team-friendly contract. And let's not forget that Marner is next up after Willie. You can't win a cup with this core. I hate saying that, but it's true from everything I've seen so far.

    Steve...
Cmon man give the Sens a little credit. They are not a bottom feeder team. The standings do not reflect their talent. Those guys ARE probably one of the greatest Ottawa teams we have ever seen. When they are on, they are in beast mode. For some reason they trip on themselves, become very hard on themselves, very fragile... but dude... they should be right up there 2nd or 3rd to Boston/Florida. Referee'ing has been a joke to both teams this year(thanks BETman) and every year it gets worse... so there's that true fact... but here's another fact.. The Sens are a great team and the league is foolish to think otherwise or dismiss it. Sure they dont have 10M dollar players, but thats because its spread around better. The salary allocation is distributed better, which means the talent is stronger overall with less failures or questionable players.
The Sens are a lion with a thorn in their paw... should that thorn fall out.. watch rankings and don't blink.

(It infuriates me so much when he tries to sell the shot on the pp cuz everyone knows hes not going to shoot) Why is Robertson (who has 0 goals since Nov 24) still on the 3rd line, let alone the starting roster? @SteveDangle I did some more thinking on your question. I've only been following the team close starting this season because I enjoy your videos/podcasts and thought following along with the games would add to my enjoyment. So I don't have the long-term experience with this team that you do.
But I have been covering sports for 25 years and have seen plenty of teams with "consistent effort" issues. It almost always starts with the team leadership, and not the coach(es) but the star players. When it comes to effort, the rest of the team almost always takes its cues from the stars. If there's a consistent energy/effort problem, it's a leadership problem and the leadership dynamic has to be changed (which almost never happens during a season).
That means this is a Core Four problem, which goes back to what you were screaming from the rooftops all last offseason, that the Core Four has to be broken up, it's not working. Matthews obviously isn't going anywhere. Tavares isn't going anywhere. Nylander is having his best season by a mile, but is a free agent this summer. Marner has been inconsistent.
I'd try to trade one of them (preferably Marner but I'm open to Nylander given his impending summer) for a respected veteran leader with a high motor who may be able to energize the rest of the team to more consistent play. That's not going to be easy to do, but when it comes to this issue, it may be the only way to address it.

We do tend to get quite down on these type of losses. Reality is a lot of the top teams this year (Boston, Vegas, avs, rangers) have lost games in similar fashion where they just play one good period. It happens and yes it does seem to happen always for this core from time to time but for me it would be about how often in a season. To date I would put 6 of their losses in that category. Either gave up or didn’t show up enough and laid an egg.

This is why I was saying for years that they had to break up the core. They should've entertained the idea after the Ayres game. They should've probably figured out a move after Game 5 in the bubble. They should've really figured out a move after Game 7 against Montreal. They should've already blown up the core well before Game 7 against Tampa.
It's obvious the problem is the core, but Dubas didn't make any moves and the second he wanted to, he got fired. The problem is Shanahan. He's overseen a team that has 1 second round GAME win in over half a decade. It's time to Shanacan the Shanaplan and get someone in there willing to actually make moves.

@@Outta-hz1ej Yes, after a regular season game. That comes after a season where they got embarrassed in the 2nd round, only winning 1 game. Which came after losing in Game 7 against Tampa where multiple errors in games 6 and 7 cost them. Which came after losing in Game 7 against Montreal when they had a 3-1 series lead over the worst team on points in the playoffs and blew it. Which came after laying an egg in Game 5 in the bubble against the Blue Jackets. Which came after losing to a 42 year old Zamboni driver who works for them. And so on and so forth.

Early lead, lull to sleep, Opponent gets physical, ties it, collapse defensively on leafs in Neutral and O-Zone, early goal in 3rd, opponents goalie makes some big saves, Leafs get “engaged” again because they’re losing , too late and the other teams squeaks out a W. infuriating
