I think the intermediate inner rockers are one of the reasons these rot out of course road salt in our winters helps thing along getting ready to do both sides on my 05 dmax keep up the good work
Nice video, one of the better I have seen on these rockers. I'm getting ready to replace a set on a 2002. Great to have access to this. One thing I have not really seen anyone address is the fact that there seems to be two layers of inner rockers on the OEM set-up. No one seems to talk about this. Your video clearly shows that the inner rocker is being welded below the rail, and to the floor support brackets. That is the detail I was looking for, as there seems to be a panel between this and the outer rocker when I cut all the old OEM metal out.
as you may know vans ar ehorrible for rocker panel rust through yay!! thats what i get to do before this minnesota winter hit again and being from this city built on a hill, lots and lots of road salt but ive replaced whole panels but as you know its always nice to watch or listen to other advice so great videos i just subscribed but have been watching for the last year thanx keep it coming
The weld thru primer is a cold galvenize type of material. Supposed to work, but I've never cut one back apart to see if it holds up. I planned on oil spraying inside the rockers, cab corners, and door bottoms as I normally do. I think the rust fighter is a great product and I may use that in conjunction with my technique to give some added protection. 3M makes a real nice spray wand for a schutz gun that is 3 ft long with a 360 degree nozzle that should work sweet. Thanks for the tip

I like using winshield weld for panel bonding and waterproofing seams.Works like the expensive panel bonds for 20 dollars a tube.awsome vidoe attacking that same problem on my 98 jeep Cherokee. Inner and outer panels roached.
Filiberto Barrera Thanks for sharing that tip! I like the panel bond product because it has built in corrosion protection and glass beads to prevent over clamping the panel
Velvethamma Ten four window winshield weld is awsome over 2k primer. And over clamping the panel is a myth been doing panel install for years and their is no such thing the tighter the better.I'm I car certified and can speak from years of experience.
Velvethamma 10 /4 their are two repairs in the automotive industry. STRUCTURAL REPAIR AND COSMETIC REPAIR..Winshields are considered and have to meet structural repair criteria. AND windshield structural repair and quarter panel STRUCTURAL repair have to by law meet structural repair methods. But yea your videos are very helpful when your on a budget.
@sanchtech I'll have to pick some up. I used the regular SEM weld thru and had trouble with it. At $30the plus a can for 3m, I'm willing to try new things.
Hey buddy. Don't know if you remember me or not, but I started on the rockers on my 2005 GMC Sierra crew cab. Driver side is getting done first. The inner rocker is not to bad. Couple spots were I took an air chisel along the bottom was a little thin, so I cut them out. One spot was about 10 inches long an the other was around 7 inches. But it was strong about an inch up from the bottom for both areas. So I cut them out and replaced the bottom. All is strong now. Now the rocker an cab corner is a different story. There is a place below the drivers door about 22 inch hole that I had to cut out, an under the back door about a 24 inch hole which goes into the cab corner. Tomorrow is going to be the cab corner, all being made from the skin of a water heater, which is thicker than the slip on rockers that's on e-bay. Been taking pictures to show you but have know idea where to send them. Having a great time doing it. Wish I had a metal bender, but Oh well. The edge board along the porch works fine. How has your truck be holding up? Hope to hear how things have been going for you. Later.
+JOHN WALTER Glad to hear you are getting your truck repairs done. If you want to send pictures, send me your email thru a pm or leave it in the comments and I will send you my email. Check back in my videos... I put up a recent video walk around on the Duramax truck that I did all the bodywork on. Still just as nice as when I finished it over 2 years ago
I've rebooted the router several times, and I eventually did an upload/download speed test and found it to be the provider. Called them and they agreed that they had sold more bandwidth than they are capable of providing. They claim they're working on it. Thanks for watching buddy
I live in a suburb outside of Detroit, Where are you in Ohio? I will make the drive for the kind of work you do man, I am IMPRESSED by your honesty and "Do it the right way" state of mind. PM me your contact info.
Thats the same weld-through primer I am gonna be using. Lots of guys use the needle scaler to remove undercoating. I think those big holes are meant to be factory alignment holes.
There's a couple ways to fill a hole that doesn't have any metal behind it. You can take a piece of copper and hold it behind the hole as a backer. Weld doesn't stick to copper. Or you can turn the wire speed up and the heat down on your mig welder and start putting down tack welds on the edge of the hole until you can connect them and grind them flat.. hope that helps
Do not buy the chrone cheaper angle sander./ drill..(cookie holder)... I've got 3 and none work right. Always had to mess with them. Got the black one and haven't has a single issue.
hi, great videos, i am currently doing the same thing on a 2002 silverado. i didnt notice in the video, how is the outer and inner rocker connected at the bottom where the outer rocker wraps under the body to the inner rocker?
Man this is a really really hard job doing it on your own for the first time did someone teach you how to do this it takes skill to do this kind of work the peices dont line up right its so hard to tell where to cut and welding is a skill with in its self and getting the filler right so so so much goes into this work it will take a long long time to complete this jod if its your first time ever doing it looks so easy but very difficult at first i dont see to many people even attempting to do this job because its a nightmare the first time how lobg does it take to learn this
Getting some aftermarket rockers and cab corners to fit decent is a challenge for every job I’ve ever done. Welding and fitting up panels is trial and error. Probably takes someone with welding sheet metal experience less time to get the hang of it. Being patient helps for sure
@@Velvethamma thank you its very frustrating i have a 2000 chevy s10 extreme and i cant find inner rocker panels anywhere online do you have any alternative ideas your work is good i like your video's thanks for posting
Not sure what exactly looked like it might be warping but I suppose it's possible. The rockers are 18ga steel so they are pretty robust and have plenty of bends in them to limit the kind of warping you might expect in a larger more flat panel. You have to be careful for sure! Thanks for watching
64impalaSS 3m Weld Thru II is overpriced but it's what my supplier carries. If I would have had time to order online I could have saved a buck for sure.....
Velvethamma how long would it take and sense you have done it do you rust proof the inside of the rockers to keep everything coated i would like as little body filler as possible and do they make the middle piece im sure mine is gone
tunercars3 It probably takes me a week or two to finish one. I coat the inner cavity with a cavity wax for rust inhibiting. Rocker panel and cab corner replacement really doesn't have much filler work involved. It's mostly welding. The middle panel is not available the last I checked
I’m getting ready to do my 99 gmc, so your video will help me a hell of a lot. Thanks

Yes. And as far as I know it is an oem only panel. Could not find them when I did these rockers on my truck

If the body is the same as the regular S-10 then Rustrepair dot com has them
Oh yeah... little by little
I only watched this one in the rocker-series can you tell me where you purchase your rockers? LMC truck?

Mill Supply in Cleveland Ohio. Rustrepair.com
Oh and by that I meant the holes that you filled because you weren't using them as spot weld holes.
From where did you the panels that you used?

Do it nice or do it twice..... right? I don't want to do this one again! Thanks Stu.
