How versatile were these guys, regae , ballads ,heavy rock , they did it all
It was the songwriting team of Chinn and Chapman that was versatile. They wrote songs in many different styles. The Sweet did not play on Co Co or on any of their single A-sides until Wig Wam Bam. Funny Funny, Alexander Graham Bell, Little Willy, Co Co and Poppa Joe were all performed by session musicians with vocals by The Sweet. Strange because they were excellent musicians. In the UK the first single written by The Sweet was Turn It Down and it failed to reach the Top 40.

I used to live in Harefield, Middlesex when I was at school early 70’s. Brian lived on the same estate. Great talent, so sad that he had a troubled life. Soul & Motown has always been my scene, but Sweet were brilliant. Thanks for the music guys, so pleased that I grew up with this music.

Hi Tracey, I recall seeing Brian a few times (I was only a boy then ! ) but I remember he dressed smart casual, T-shirt & jeans, sometimes leather trousers, which were quite noticeable ! Also, his striking trademark long blond hair (though most guys had long hair late 60’s/early 70’s). I only recall seeing him by himself, can’t ever remember seeing him with the other Sweet band members, though I know Mick lived in Ruislip, and Steve lived in Hayes (both towns just a few miles from Harefield,, Middlesex). I remember seeing Brian once with a group of young lads, all dressed in trendy clothes, could possibly have been members of one of the pre-Sweet bands. That’s really all I can recall, I believe Brian moved from Harefield in the very early Sweet days ( possibly around the time of “Funny Funny” & “Co-Co”) .
Certainly a fantastic lead singer, visually and vocally, with a great band, brilliant that they started with pop songs then moved on to rock (which I think suited Brian’s vocals perfectly) while keeping the fun in the music. I just found out that Steve Priest died yesterday. Another great talent lost.......but their music lives on forever.

I'm 55 so I only remember them as a child on top of the pops! 😃 but I love them because they remind me of better times!! I too am so gutted to hear about Steve 😪 he was so funny! Tracey De La Haye Hi Tracey, thanks for your nice reply 😊 Not sure where you live, but a South Coast Radio Station called “Radio Solent” are broadcasting a 4 hour special containing all the Sweet hits, plus lots of info on the band, and listener contributions. They are playing other stuff as well, mainly early 70’s. It’s on now 10:00 - 14:00. Or it can be downloaded on BBC sounds app “Mid morning on Solent. Saturday 6 June Alex Dyke Show”. Regards. Brian
Yeah, Brian's story is heartbreaking. Very sad that he died at the young age of 52. Love and miss you Brian!

I turned 18 in 1973 and what a great time we all had with the music and discotheques. Every weekend we danced til 3.00am to music like this!

I saw a vid of him with his SP Sweet, I would not have known him, so bloated, and waddling about on stage with dyed hair and having to sit down on the drum riser to get his breath back. So sad to see. If only it was possible for us to all go back in time!

Sweets Hits hörte ich jedoch nur im Radio Ö3 und vergaß dieses Lied. in den frühen 1980 gabs auf Ö3 "die Sendung die 70'er HIts eines Jahrzehntes mit Liedern aus der Zeit, täglich eine Stunde , leider kann ich mich ebenso nicht mehr erinnern ob sie "Sweet" spielten...

It's criminal how underrated this band remain. Later rock bands like Motley Crue site them as a major influence, it really does amaze me how they aren't held in the same esteem as other rock bands from the UK. Sometimes think their glam rock edge cost them credibility, which is bullshit because glam rock was more than just a fun glitzy phase. It was a music movement with memorable and genuine talent - Bolan, Bowie, Roxy Music, Sweet, Slade, all of which have influenced later musicians. Without these acts music would never have progressed as it did.
Absolutely spot on. Sweet we’re so talented. Seeing them live was an absolute privilege.
So lucky to have grown up in the 70s.
I like Motley Crue, but The Sweet are about a thousand times better than Motley Crue!
