The Animatrix - Caravan Of Garbage

- čas přidán 21. 12. 2021
- In 2003 the year of The Matrix we got sequels in both Reloaded and Revolutions. But in addition to that there was also a direct to DVD anthology series in The Animatrix. A series of high production animations that tell multiple stories within and around the Matrix including a prequel on how the human/machine war began, a direct lead in to Reloaded with Final Flight of the Osiris and more. Currently still canon it seems as if much of this will lead in to Resurrections. Thanks for watching!

#TheMatrix #Resurrections - Zábava
The second renaissance when the machines were snatching ppl off the battlefield and doing experiments was the scariest shit ever.
The scene with the CGI girl's ass has been in mind, not because I liked it, but because my mom was watching it with me. Probably one of the most awkward moments of my life.
Nightmare fuel!
When the sentinels break into the ship in Final Flight of the Osiris was the scariest shit ever. One just fkn stabs a tentacle straight through one of the gunner's torsos while another sneaks up behind another crew member and prepares these blade things...
I was too young to watch that shit.
I know that now.
Yup. When they rip that guy out of the mech and he's screaming for help. Still bothers me.
@@JesseCuster that’s the scene that got me. The desperation and fear in the screaming was so visceral.
That sprinter literally *RUNNING OUT OF THE MATRIX* is still the most metal shit I've ever seen.
Yes, but is it more metal if a rockstar literally rocked out of the Matrix. Or a porn star fucking themselves out of the Matrix??? The possibilities...
It's so visceral it makes me wince every time.
Even when I watched this as a kid, I was stunned by that scene.
Word. The idea of an athlete pushing themselves so hard that they break out...
As you said... metal
Always been my favorite part of the movie
For The Batman you need to do Twilight, it's got Robat Battinbat playing a bat man in it, it's basically a prequel.
Nevermind my idea. I like this better.
YES!!
Ahhh so he's man bat
Yes!
genius
The tiny clip from The Second Renaissance where the robot tears open one of the manned combat units, only to then rip the screaming man out of it while his limbs remain in it, has lived rent free in my head for almost 20 years....
Yeah that really fucks me up. Horrifying
Like a lobster out of it's shell.
Thank-You! That whole scene where the soldiers are praying to those priests and afterwards haunt my nightmares.
Same here
For me, it’s the scene where that gynoid was beaten by the humans begging them to stop. “I’m real!”
Finish the Rat Pack film series, James. You can’t just review two of them and not finish what you’ve started.
I love how much they hate those movies.
Man everyone working on this channel deserves a break after the stellar year of content. Excited for what 2022 brings!
spot on. they did great this year.
It's been dubbed "The year of the Caravan" M8
You won't fool anyone, Mason! This is obviously your alt account, because we all know you do nothing on this channel!
@@blyzer7373 Nice burner account Mason.....lol. Bloody got em M8
Yes, along with all the other people with full time employment who take holidays at this time of year....fuck this comment is dumb.
Please cover Enter the Matrix, otherwise known as "Matrix: Recorded off-camera"
its fully nostalgia based but its my favorite piece of matrix media
Don’t forget Path of Neo!
@@carter_lovejoy they've done enough path of neo lol
it's pretty cool how they took the time to record 35mm footage just for it
@ÓVITA no
The best part of The Matrix is the first, half, before Neo is freed. The sequels completely ignored the "blue pills" i.e. people still inside, to the point where they do not seem to be considered people at all. The Animatrix really showed the potential of the stories you can tell about them, and a lot of the time it is more interesting than whatever the hell that was going on in Zion.
My favorite was definitely Beyond, the one where the girl and her cat find the weird house that is a glitch in the Matrix. I love the animation style, the slower pace, and the sense of wonder of the girl and the kids as they explore the house.
It felt just like a Ghibli film but this time with the added knowledge that they’re in the Matrix, telling us why the strange things are happening but not the characters.
What's so great about these shorts is that they are basically just exploring those smaller ideas they brought up in the first film and all the better for it, managing to still keep it simple while getting ambitious. It's why I hold it in better regard than the latter too in retrospective.
I always loved this DVD lol
When the fan flicks were better than the sequels. After the third movie I knew I’d never spend another dime on the franchise.
The Final Flight of the Osiris is damn well animated for its time. CGI for human characters have come a long way since, to be sure, but if someone had told me it was made in 2008 or 2009 I'd probably have believed them.
I always assumed the Animatrix History of the start of the War was 100% true. Because it sounds so human to create something, treat them terribly and then complain when they rebel.
"What could go wrong if I abuse these robots?"
I absolutely love The Second Renaissance. It is easily the second best story in The Matrix franchise (even after Ressurections).
Easily one of the best moments in the Matrix history
It’s absolutely great even if I think it’s mostly machine propaganda given what we learn about the true nature of Zion and the Resistance in the later movies. It being an in universe data file from Zions archive.
Well considering there’s only 2 separate matrix stories (the original trilogy and resurrections)…
Resurrections was a train wreck
And instead of those idiot new sequel we got the second renaissance etc should have been made into a major live action movie. Something sad and horrific.
Clicked the notif, can’t wait to hear James and or Maso demand I click like
I love following orders!
30 seconds in....
Your profile pic is adorable
@@brentmoss7360 thank you
Well, did you?!
For me this is the best thing Matrix related. And I agree with Ben, “The Glitch” is the best.
That chapter is actually called "Beyond". I think it and "The Second Renaissance" are the best parts of the movie. The rest of it is mediocre, honestly.
@@ThreadBomb not a popular opinion, but I adore "the aeon flux one" ("Matriculated"). It's a pretty haunting rumination about the danger inherent in opening onesself up to new ways of thinking and forming bonds with other beings.
@@ThreadBomb "The rest of it is mediocre"
Sheesh, I get that you hate Animatrix, you don't have to be a Keanu Reeves simp about it.
Honestly, I think the reason why Animatrix worked so well is that, as you said, the vast majority of the shorts just focused on completely normal, average people exploring the world of the Matrix and giving us these incredibly unique points of view of it. The movies were always going to give us dudes flying and kung-fu fighting, but they were never going to give us, say, a detective tracking down someone from Zion, or some kids experiencing a glitch in the Matrix. The Wachowskis knew that they had an opportunity to make the world so much bigger and feature so many different characters, and the Animatrix is still pretty much essential viewing for anyone who wants to get into The Matrix. Contrast this with, say, Star Wars Visions, where practically all the shorts were about people with lightsabers (and the majority took place in the 30 or so years between episodes III and IV, in a universe whose timeline spans millions of years), and as a result Visions fell really flat - especially when you consider it as a tool for expanding the universe of Star Wars.
Thank you for verbalizing this so well. I’ve often wondered why I loved the Animatrix and felt meh about Star Wars Visions. You nailed it.
in germany the animatrix was shown on free tv prior to being sold on dvd. i never understood why but i remember that evening like it was yesterday; i was so hyped!
Yeah, I remember that! It was showing really late and I had to negotiate with my mum to be allowed to watch it, but I was soooo hyped for it. I think back then the TV station and the german publisher for Matrix stuff were owned by the same parent company.
"watch them in the order they came out" is the correct answer for every single one of these series. Maso is correct.
It was an acceptable joke. I was reasonably happy it
I remember being 15 when this came out and The Second Renaissance scared the shit out of me.
Same man, even the age bit
Coincidentally I just watched this on Adult Swim. Really cool. I just liked that there were back stories revealed. Keep up the good content. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Since it’s being your last Caravan of Garbage and all.
the guy that did the samurai short"program" for animatrix - he did the storyboards for the matrix film - thats why the shots were so good and straight out of a manga - yoshiaki kawajiri
I think what's so great about The Glitch is that it shows how the Matrix, viewed without the nasty truth of it, can be beautiful. That within it there is room for these moments of wonder and beauty, (which can also be frightening and strange) and that the real crush of it, the real heartbreak of the story, is about how this beautiful, amazing thing is, at the end of the day, wielded as a means of control. It makes me think a lot about the misuse of technology. It makes me think about how the choices made in implementing technology are vitally important, and that depending on whether that implementation improves or impoverishes our lives falls heavily on the people deciding how to use it.
So thoughtfully stated. Great comment. Thank you
I remember being super psyched for this when I heard it was coming out. Got the DVD and watched it with my mates before we went to see Reloaded at the cinema. The Aeon Flux one is definitely the weakest one but it's still a fantastic collection of shorts.
Still looks really good tho.
I thought you were super psyched for Mason's joke
@@yoavcohen2218 I was super syked for Mason's joke.
Seeing them upload a video covering the Animatrix completes a loop in my life.
My cousin and I have always (for some reason) said "The Bloody Animatrix" in an Australian accent for about 15 years whenever it's been referenced
I actually own the super-duper-extended DVD box set with ten discs and the Animatrix inside. Absolutely worth every cent.
I have this too, the amount of effort that was put into the presentation alone for this set was staggering. I have the films on Blu-ray and on 4K Blu-ray and neither of those have the same level of care put into the packaging
World Record is my favorite, normal people waking up is such a fascinating idea.
Second Renaissance I&II is pretty out there. The noise that that female robot makes as they tear her apart is one of many moments burned into my brain.
Ugh, that got recommended to me on CZcams and it absolutely ruined me.
The Second Renaissance is so damn good. Its still my favorite part of The Matrix as a whole and the concept continues to prove feasible if not likely to this day
Completely unfeasible, at least the result of the wars are. Machines would never try to make a battery out of humans. Our bodies produce less electricity than an energizer battery does in our entire life time.
@@tonysmith9905 what leads up to the battery thing is still very likely. Humans are a trash animal
The Second Renaissance (p1 and p2) is one of my favourite anime productions, it’s so good, the story is amazing and it fills in so much backstory to the world of The Matrix
For Dr. Strange I would like you to do a review of Doctor Mordrid, the movie that was supposed to be Strange's but they didn't have the rights.... We need to see Jeffrey Combs in the Multiverse of Madness! 😅
That’s going to be episode of the upcoming season of Mystery Science Theater 3000.
@@josephkolar3443 I don't watch that... I prefer James & Maso
I honestly just want more of you two doing caravan of garbage. I don't care about the what because whatever it is, it's always fun and interesting with the both of you. Merry christmas and happy new year, and to you as well Ben.
When watching Thor 2 for the first time, those scenes in the warehouse where the physics don't work made me think of the glitch house.
Same
Yeah they had to have taken it directly.
@@ryansizemore5064 not necessarily
It shares so many similarities it has to have been a big influence
@@andrewr880 I mean... "so many similarities"? Not really. The haunted* abandoned building in Animatrix altered reality, made things float, rewound time, etc.
In Thor 2, there was an invisible portal to an alternate dimension.
So no, not "so many similarities".
Tonally the scene is reminiscent of the other. But that's really about it.
Later during act 3, the Energy makes a car light enough to pick up and move, but that's about all we see it do.
So again, the one scene is tonally reminiscent enough to remind people who have seen both... but there certainly aren't "so many similarities" that it has to be.
I'm sure it probably was though.
But not by your assessment.
And the concepts of portals, pocket dimensions, lost dimensions, etc have existed long before either movie.
Enter the Matrix was surprisingly good. I remember playing it when it first came out and loving it. Played through both campaigns. It was great seeing the live action video in between levels. Also, it introduced us to the best Operator ever: Sparks.
I definitely think this is still the best of the "anime anthology spinoff" thing that American media sometimes does, like *Batman: Gotham Knight* and *Star Wars Visions.* Mostly because, like you guys said, this one actually uses the opportunity to tell other kinds of stories that help flesh out the Matrix universe, and doesn't just copy the movies or feel like filler.
Yeah, while I liked most of the shorts in Star Wars Visions, most of them were basically telling the exact same story (Jedi fights Sith) with different artstyles, instead of trying to explore the lore more or trying to do some more interesting stuff with the Force.
@@KainGerc Aren't they try some more interesting things with Force in new trilogy and people didn't like it 🤔... but that's weren't the real issues with new trilogy...
Thanks for another great year of content, boys!
You should definitely do Enter The Matrix! It's essential viewing.
Definitely! Path of Neo is the lesser of the two.
This is such an underrated gem, so glad ya'll are covering it.
You could say that they...grabbed that gem!
Look I love the animatrix and the matrix movies more than most people, but this is not anywhere near an underrated hidden gem. when somethings sells 2.7 million copies, it is officially successful and well-known

Would love to see CoGs on Speed Racer, Jupiter Ascending and Cloud Atlas BTW
10:39 Agreed, Ben. So much so I'm going to dig up that DVD and watch it again.
Kids story was pretty awesome. I love the mix of super low detail with super high detail. There are also sections where you can tell he is spacing out, and others where he is going so hard that the world starts to break apart around him. Like when he first grabs his skateboard to evade his pursuers; the way that his speed is portrayed is brilliant, I think he is moving WAY faster than is even shown.
World record was very similar with a great mix of slow and fast movements and a great representation of speed.
last Caravan of the year, hot damn. I discovered you guys this year and im looking forward to watching you more. For recommendations, the ones you mentioned sound good. I guess Doctor Strange 2 and Thor 4 will have their own prep which will be great. for the lols, do Tommy Wiseau's The Room.
Second Renaissance part Deux is the most terrifying vision of The Matrix ever put on screen. Didnt care for the Peter Jeung one either and im obsessed with Aeon Flux..
I loved this back in the day, when I was a kid. Felt like a great exploration of a world and kinda taught me about AUs
You know what I want you to cover next year that I’m excited for?… AVATAR, FUCKING AVATAR, YOU FILMED IT A YEAR AGO AND YOU STILL HAVEN’T RELEASED IT, JUST EDIT IT IF IT HASN’T BEEN EDITED AND BOOM! EASY UPLOAD! EASY MONEY. Enjoy your break, excited to see you back next year.
"Hand over your flesh and a new world awaits. We demand it." Most metal fucking line in the entire Matrix franchise.
Another year of amazing content James and Maso and all the bloody lunatics spending way too much time in from of an computer screen editing all this!!!
In the famous words of Goop lady: You can rest now.
I found the Second Renaissance really traumatic when I first watched it as a teen lol. Now I'm an adult we've got A.I., (still years off whats in the Matrix) and makes me think we're going to lose so badly if we did ever have a war. Also watching this video I finally FINALLY understand why the characters from ''Last Flight of the Osiris'' are the same models from Final Fantasy
STAR WARS PREQUELS !!!
also enjoy the break, you guys and editors have been so funny and entertaining this year so thank you
As an owner of the 2004 DVD "Ultimate Matrix Collection" (gift from the parents - $130!) that you showed off disassembled, I can tell you Animatrix was in it.
The watching order you suggested is exactly the order i watched them for the first time!!! And i 100% agree it was the way to go! Animatrix after the first movie (I didnt see the last 2 in theaters) made me appreciate the last 2 more than I would have......i think.
I've always said viewing all of them as tho they are animes, goes a long way.
Never mind Enter The Matrix I want to see a Caravan of Garbage on Dreamcatcher, it's gloriously terrible.
A great year for Caravan Garbage. Very excited for the garbages next year!
I'd love to see you guys cover some classic Star Trek movies. The Motion Picture can be painful to sit through, but maybe you could do the Genesis Trilogy of Wrath Of Khan, Search For Spock and Voyage Home.
I'm actually surprised how good the CG, especially since it was 2003! Some of those models look so detailed and hyper-realistic (missing a couple of things like contact shadows and subsurface scattering, and animation, but it's 2003 so all those systems haven't been thought of, let alone have the CPU/GPU power to be able to render with them)...4:12, 4:13 freeze framed are extremely good for its time.
Especially when you go back and visit say “Shark’s tale” which looks like a Ps1 video game cut scene.
@@dklustick Yeah, old CGI animations were terrible back then, which even Shrek (considered top tier in 2001-2002) looks so dated now, but it's always interesting going back and see how much work people have put in to get to our current point to make things seem more realistic.
Only need to work on human/skin textures and animating to make movies/tv series that are fully CG look like they were filmed for real.
You guys should cover the 90's comic strip movie adaptations
Dick Tracy
The Shadow
The Phantom
The Rocketeer
They're some of my favorites and are really overlooked nowadays. Hardly anyone ever talks about them

The Animatrix is what I wish Hollywood would just start doing more of. We don't need everything to be a 3 hour blockbuster cinematic universe $300m movie. The Animatrix was just like, 'Ok lets find like a dozen really talented animation studios, and ask them to create something which fits the universe we've established in the movie that fleshes out it out in interesting and unique ways'. Because the result is a lot of variety and interesting ideas, rather than just more of the same ol thing we normally get.
Hey guys just a reminder to watch Snake Eyes for the podcast this week. Now I know I left a comment on last weeks caravan of garbage but this time I’m 100% telling the truth. James and Maso are finally going to watch Hasbros best movie ever made Snake Eyes! So pick your favorite streaming platform, maybe even find a local rental shop and watch it! So then this Monday December 27 You can see what The mates think of it!
I remember getting the Animatrix disc included with my DVD copy of the original movie - I always showed it to people who were interested and everyone always thought it kinda sucked. But I always liked it and thought it was a unique collection, glad you guys liked it
Plllllease do Enter the Matrix
Dark City.
7:20 If the humans really attacked first, don't hesitate for a second that they are going to say "we don't know who striked first"... I mean, it's what happens every day in real world, right?
Exactly what I thought too, that humans would feign ignorance of responsibility out of embarrassment.
Watched it the other night. Thought it was pretty solid. And this dropped just in time for me to watch it before I see the Matrix new Matrix tonight. Can't wait to hear what the man who knows everything about anime thought of it.
Happy you're taking a break, you deserve it for all the wonderful stuff :)
Would love to see the Scream trilogy or Scream reboots, lots of good Metaverse stuff in those movies.
More awful Friedburg and Seltzer movies!
Suggestions for next year, I feel like you guys are at your best with films where the general consensus usually is, everyone hates it (ie Caravan of Garbage). Why not take it a step further because I would love to see you do a whole video on asshole celebs(Tobey Maguire and Jared Leto). I know you could do it, you did that "Why is Tom Cruise" video and it was great. I
God hearing y’all poking fun at weebs is hilarious and would love more of that 😂
The order I think is best is:
Matrix - The world and concept establishing title
Animatrix - Establishes the future events and some characters of Reloaded, ETM, Revolutions and MXO
Matrix Reloaded - Expands the Matrix and what it's capable of as well as who more main players are
Enter The Matrix (ROM or watch playthroughs) - Brings back characters from Reloaded in different scenarios and expands on characters from Reloaded that become more important in Matrix Revolutions, MXO and Resurrections
Matrix Revolutions - Completes the main story with all important characters and their roles established to their maximum extent.
Cutscenes online and wiki articles about the events of Matrix Online - Continues and depicts the aftermath of Revolutions and builds even more on characters that will appear in or influence the events of Resurrections and was the official end of the Matrix universe for the remainder of the time prior to Resurrections with a lot of that canon still being included and essential
Path Of Neo (ROM or watch playthroughs) - Quick recap of the main trilogy for the most part, establishes and predicts some of the meta elements that come back in Resurrections
Matrix Resurrections - The latest entry that calls back thematically as well as canonically to many of the things that happened above (especially MXO) and either could be the last true Matrix movie or the new dawn of another series time will tell
Have a great Christmas break!
I would love to see a surface level, superficial review of the second Mission Impossible trilogy next year, especially with the new one coming out.
The scene with the cutting of the clothes off was better than the 4th movies fight with Neo and Morpheus.
Merry Christmas guys. Love your content and hope you both have a good break.
Best joke is by the editor throwing in a surprise Danny Devito
Edit: I would enjoy and/or appreciate a Batman returns episode
on her majesty secret service review or commentary, first australian bond, and a great action christmas movie, before die hard and very die hard esque. not many people know that, but should be viewed every christmas, it has a christmas song, christmas tree, snow, and other festivities, so total christmas film.
The second renaissance part 1 and 2 are fantastic short animations. I love the whole mechanised horseman of the apocalypse burning away. "Your flesh is a relic, a mere vessel. Hand over your flesh and a new world awaits you. We demand it"

Have I been Matrixed?
Netflix is missing a great opportunity to produce an Animatrix show with different stories like Black Mirror!
The Second Renaissance Parts 1 and 2 were released for free on Warner Bros website a few weeks before The Matrix Reloaded was released to Cinemas. Then they were bundled on to the Animatrix.
All I want for Christmas is a detailed Snake Eyes review.
They showed the cgi fight scene before the matrix reloaded and OMG It blew my bind. That was like the most advanced thing I’d ever seen. 😍😍
Hey dudes. Long time watcher, second time commenter. Here's what I think you should do in 2021:
There's a Disney-produced Russian fantasy movie series (1 and 2 are out so far) based on Russian fairy tales. It's actiony, it's fantastical, it's got great CG characters, it's weird as hell and fun too. There's probably a dub or subtitles out there. It's certainly original. I'm certain you dudes would enjoy it.
Love from Ireland! (via the former USSR) xoxo
the second renaissance 1 & 2 are the only ones that I still watch from time to time
We need a full series of the prequel machine war!
Never been more desperate for a video from you guys but I can't wait for your Resurrections upload.
Pleeeease do the Star Wars prequels. I feel like they'll crush Mason on rewatching.
I love these anime shorts collections. Halo Legends is also great. There is even a short by the director of the Second Renaissance that tells that recaps the Halo history.
That laughter clip made me want to hide my head under my blanket.
That joke was so good, I think Mason should get to rename the channel “home of Nick Mason’s friend”
Honestly, they should have released Animatrix in theaters because once you see the background stories going on in it, it makes the two sequel films have more gravity. And the fact they keep referencing things from Animatrix makes it feel like you had missed something in between. And you kind of had!
Honest opinion: I kind of wish they had just made the Matrix and left it alone. Kind of like Highlander. The more films you add, the more it just waters things down. The original stood on it's own and didn't need sequels. BUT, if there WERE going to do sequels, I wish they had done a follow up to Revolutions. And not waited eighteen years to do it. There definitely felt like there was a story waiting to be told at the end of Revolutions. That movie didn't answer questions. I asked new ones. But they were INTERESTING! Humanity builds the machines as servants. The machines want independence. Humans try to destroy them. War ensues. Machines create a simulation world to keep humans occupied while they live as batteries in the real world. But the simulation gains sentience. And now individual programs are as well. It's kind of what Tron wanted to do, but was too early for. A treasure trove of possibilities that just got lost in the shuffle.
Now they come back with something completely different. Kind of like Twin Peaks Season 3. The problem with bringing old properties back is that what a creator had in mind at the end of the last cycle will probably get lost and change dramatically by the time they bring it back. But, especially in this digital age, people have been watching the old thing and don't like the jarring sensation of time sneaking back into their entertainment. Sometimes it's better just to have the "What if...?"
*I watched this when I woke up because the amazing CZcams app didn’t notify me until 14 hrs after it came out. At **11:53** I was so confused when Maso said he’s surprised people didn’t jump off the roof in the real world. I thought he meant like in Zion the real world until I fully woke up. I thought he meant that people in zion might think they are still in the matrix. But the New Zealand prime minister did try it in flight of the Concords.*
15:10 you know what we want James.. High School Musical Trilogy!
Last Renaissance part 1 & 2 are phenomenal.
The Second Renaissance narrator is the Zion Mainframe, as she states early in the short. So it's from humanity's records, but it may be so highly classified that Morpheus doesn't know about it, which is why he tells Neo nobody knows who started it.
