For a 2013 V6 you will either have:
- a 5 Speed (Name = Nag-1, aka W5A580, etc.)
- an 8 Speed (Name = 845RE, 8HP45RE)
You'll know which you have by how many gears you have. You can find this out by putting it in to manual mode or just listening for the shifts. For the 5 Speed you put it into manual mode by pushing the Shifter to the right once -- I don't know the procedure for the 8 Speed. Looks like the Shifter Designs are different for each of the 2 Transmissions also.
The 8HP45RE fits:
Chrysler-Dodge-Ram
2015-Present Chrysler 300 V6
2012-Present Dodge Charger V6
2012-Present Dodge Challenger V6
2014-2017 Dodge Durango V6

This is better than some guys with camera men and 2 hands! You've inspired my confidence. 💯💯
Thank you! Glad it helped motivate you also.
This is the best and most careful explanation on how to change the transmission fluid that I have found so far. Thank you
Luis Bustamante - Thank you Luis. Means a lot.
Thanks for the vid- really helpful. I will be doing this myself since dealer quoted me $750 to do this.
Wow that's an insane quote. Glad you're doing it! Thanks for commenting.
My gfs dad is a mechanic and helped me to do this today on the lift when I was doing my oil and tire rotation today. Even on ramps it’s such an easy job.
Sounds like a good time. Thanks for commenting and watching.
Mr Ficks no problem. Love your videos. Help me out a lot for DIY

Very thorough, thanks for the tips

Thanks for the video. Helped me a lot
You're very welcome.
There is a new dipstick with a locking cap built in for the NAG1 transmissions on Amazon. I'm going to give it a try. Thanks for sharing this video.
Thanks for the Update. Glad you found it useful.
Hey I tried that dipstick from Amazon and it's not long enough unfortunately ... buyer's beware!
VERY well done informative video. Thanks
Thank you very much.
Good video thanks for the info
Nice Vid. lot of effort Thanks
Thank you.
I bought everything you show and im about to do this tomorrow, thank you for this video.
My pleasure. Thanks for commenting.
All in all would you say it took about 4 qts?
Yes that's a good estimate.
I may have overfilled to 65 ml on the dorman stick and I'm running at 160 degrees, so I'm slightly over.i been able to feel a little shift while driving, think I should drain out the 5 extra ml or leave it?
@@BLud_Bro_FoE - Sorry, didn't see this til now. (It doesn't notify of comments within comments) -- I think you should drain it if you haven't already and at this point you might as well change it again.
Did u have to remove the tc cross member ! Some say gor 6,4L theres no room to get to lastvrear bolts of tge pan unless drop crossmember!
Thanks for video! Was is possible to do all the change on the ground, on those wooden ramps? Just curious if you have good access to the the srews?
You're Welcome. Yes it was enough space but difficult to film while under there :).
Good explanation video. I just have a question, mine is has the 8speed auto trans . Would it be same dipstick or would it be different ?
I'm pretty sure those have the dipstick on the pan if I remember right.
Hi - thanks for this great tutorial. Did you re-use the original gasket?
Thank you. No I believe I replaced it.
Also, tip: When you have the filter and pan off, while you're down there, make sure all the little screws under the transmission because alot of times, I've seen alot of them loosen up over time, especially if you have rough shifting, shudders, or slippage, it'll help fix that.
Thanks!
Mr Ficks what oil and transmission fluid do you recommend for a 13 charger RT , 97k miles ?
@@jordanh1828 - Just Mopar ATF and Amazon 5w20 full synthetic oil changed around 4k miles. Higher quality oil is great too if you can afford. Royal Purple is a great one.
Mr Ficks ok bro thanks I appreciate it! I got my charger wit 94.4k miles n now I’m at 96.9 , should I change it now or just wait til 97k? Might sound like a dumb question but I’m just getting into cars lol

You have the 8sp trans correct? I found a little red fluid under my 2016 Charger V6 w/ 8sp trans today so I want to check the fluid level and try and figure out whats going on. Just double checking the chart you used in this video would be the same for my car.
No, I have the 5 speed. I did look up info on the one you have (8HP45) from a recent comment and I'll paste it here for you. Also I'd get under the car and try to find the source of the leak before you change the fluid.

Hey I was wondering if u could help my transmission is running hot it start of cold and about 30 minutes into driving it's at 190 and rising there's a real lil grind when I change gears at cold start and after it's fine was wondering what should I do ii have a v6 3.6 i would really appreciate any response thank u
Sounds like there's not enough fluid in there.
Great video. I only have the Dorman dipstick and have been struggling with finding when it hits…. Would you happen to know the length at which it hits the bottom? Like tip to where you put the black line
This is just a rough estimate but it's about 33.75" to the mark.
But please only use that for when you should expect to feel it hit... It's millimeters differences for the correct reading so keep that in mind.
Sorry to comment on an old video with quesrions but i have a 07 charger same transmission right down to a T, well anyway ive done this and changed the speed sensor on top of the valve body and now my car wont move it shifts but not going anywhere, could i be just low on fluid or do i need a whole new transmission?
Sounds like an electrical connection issue. Double check your work.
Hi Mr Ficks, wondering if i can do same on my 2013 R/T Max. Currently indicating a service transmission message, Terribly hard steering, almost impossible to turn, reverse camera not indicating anymore. All these sprang up when i left the previous battery in car and traveled for a few months without disconnecting. Is there a way to reset?
Emma Eme • sounds like you're out of power steering fluid... I have a video on filling it. Also you can try unplugging the negative cable on the battery for at least ten minutes... How many miles does it have?
Emma Eme • Also yes you can change the transmission fluid... And let's hope that fixes the message... Otherwise you'll need to take it in to a shop with a dealer-scanner and see what's going on with it.
Do not use aftermarket fluid. Use the correct ATF+4. While other fluids may be "compatible", they are likely not approved by Chrysler for use in this transmission.
The model name for the 5-spd auto is the A-580. Chrysler does not use the older NAG 1 designation, which ended with the LX Charger in 2010. The LD (2011+) cars use the Chrysler - built and engineered version, which is now used only in the Charger Pursuit (2015+).
P Kranz • Nag 1 is another name for A580.. It's explained in the transmission service manual I included in the description box. If someone is worried about an aftermarket fluid then they should use Mopar ATF4. I have had good results with Royal Purple so far but I fully agree that using the original Mopar fluid is very smart.
I know this is old but is the Trans temp on the dash as accurate as using a scan tool?
Never tried it but I'd assume you'd get a faster refresh rate but they wouldn't be more than a couple degrees off from each other. Good question and thanks for watching.
Please tell me how many 1/4 do you put in the transmission? thanks
I'm assuming you're asking about the fluid.. not sure what 1/4 is. If you think the fluid level is already correct then just replace the amount that you take out. The dipstick tool is to be sure though.
I got the same Charger (2013 3.6L V6), and the tranny's pan is plastic, with the filter built in it, and it's recommended to be replaced once you take the drain plug off of it. Wondering why yours is metal..
Abdelrahman farag • I don't know. I've only seen metal ones for this model.
You have the 845RE 8-spd transmission, completely different, different fluid check, different fluid
I have a dipstick that I brought from autozone it had numbers up there it doesn’t show like low or high it just has numbers how do I know wen it’s low on transmission fluid
15:40
Follow the graph in the pdf file that's found in the description.
Is there a difference between transmission fluid change and transmission flush?
Yes .. flush means all the old fluid was replaced and is usually done with a machine... although you can do it by unscrewing one of the transmission lines and emptying in a bucket while new fluid is being poured in with the car running. (some videos show that process) .. here's a video on a flush machine - czcams.com/video/VWjtmCJLRLM/video.html
I really hope you reply! When should you change the transmission fluid in your charger?
If you do mostly highway miles.. Every 50-60k. If Mostly street.. Then 30-40k.
Mr Ficks really appreciate it! Very helpful video!
@@cyphcastles • Thank you for watching and commenting.
Got the same engine, mine normally is at 163 like you said , now if I hit it ,it goes to 172 tops then drops ,didn't used to do that....
You might be low on fluid or it's just wear from hitting it.
It's supposed to rise in temp though when you stress it. 172 isn't too bad.
The black pan is that the one for the engine oil?
Yes.
I know this is a 6 year old video , information is super helpful. But by any chance do you know where I can find the trans fluid level chart for 2012 Charger SE
. It’s an 8 speed . Tried looking up chart everywhere but no luck .
So your transmission is the 845RE aka the 8 speed. I commented about a year ago on this video for info on that. I pinned it to the top to make it easy for you to find. There's a 845RE PDF linked in that comment.. Try page 18 for how to check your fluid level.

what would make the ABS light the traction control light and the brake light come on and the cruise control not work
Charles Golden • pretty certain that's an issue with your ABS module... You could try getting it scanned with a dealer level scan tool to verify. I think Auto Zone will do that for free.

Is your NAG1 same as the NAG1 5 spd from SRT8 chargers? 5 spd?
Yes. Same transmission.
I just called the auto parts store and apparently there's two possible transmissions for this car, can someone tell me how to know which transmission I have, it's the 3.6

Hello, I have a 2013 Charger SXT and I can’t find the fill tube. I had a buddy check and it’s not there. Am I blind?
E Buck • can you take a picture of the engine bay and upload it and paste the link here so I can look?
You likely have the 8 speed automatic transmission which is NOT the Nag 1 transmission and we do not have access to our transmission fill tube. The Mercedes Nag 1 transmission is the 5 speed buddy. It sucks for us.
When you were checking your transmission fluid at how many inches did the dipstick hit the bottom of the transmission for the fluid reading?
Never measured it that way. Watch the latter part of the video where I made a mark on the dipstick to show where it hit bottom.
@@mrficks1838 hey I was asking at how many inches did the dipstick bottom out? Like what’s the measurement on where you marked the dipstick at?
I know what you meant but I never measured that. I could measure it and tell you but when the fluid reading relies on millimeter differences it might not be the same distance on your vehicle. Maybe it is but you're best off doing the method described in the video.

These videos apply to 2011-2014 3.6L Engine - Chargers, Challengers, Chrysler 300's, Jeeps, etc with 5-Speed Nag 1 Transmissions.
If you have the 8-Speed (8HP45RE) this video is not applicable.
How to determine which Transmission you have:
1. Put in Manual Mode and count.
2. Listen for the shifts in Auto mode.
Hey Quick Question, The Trans Dipstick You Put The Link For, Will it Work On A 5.7 V8? I know On Amazon It Says It Won't. But sometimes it's not accurate
phigo4kins • No, you need this one - amzn.to/2rHwJhz . Thanks for watching.
If it actually hitting the bottom of the pan, you could stick it in when the pan is off. Get a general bottom stick location from under the car, and mark or score the stack at the top of the tube in the engine.
How did you add the fluid?
Rafael Ayala ~ With a funnel in the fill tube (the one you saw me putting the Dipstick in) Here's the type of funnel I used - amzn.to/2ooj6Qx. Thanks for the question and watching.. about to upload a brake maintenance video on this same vehicle.
Mine didn’t have one I have a 2012 dodge charger se can someone help?
You might need some good walking shoes if your car is missing the transmission. But I assume you meant there's no dipstick in the engine bay. The ZF 8HP transmission has it on the underbody... This will show you the process.. Have fun - czcams.com/video/BPkCUfqi-gE/video.html
This sheet the one it comes with the dipstick it WRONG be aware, I have got one of those dipstick and my transmission fluid never been changed from still the factory fluid and I was curious to know how much the level is so in cold it gave me 70 millimeter when it’s hot like 125 degrees it gives me around 77 millimeter so your transmission should have on 70 millimeter fluid not below that , Thanks for your great video btw 👍🏻
Thanks. The temperature graph I'm using here is from the nag1 manual (page 615). I put a link for it in the description. I'm going to trust that seeing that's it's a very engineer specific guide. Your car may of been filled too much at the factory. You may also want to verify that you have a Nag1.
My 2013 Charger RT transmission temperature gauge shows it’s overheating, any ideas why?
Could be many things. I'd try changing the fluid and filter/ pan gasket and keeping the rpm's down and seeing if it's still there.
When the car is idling it will show you coolant temp for some reason and not trans temp until the car is in motion.
@@BLud_Bro_FoE in reverse or any forward gear*
I’m at 104k miles in a 2014 and my transmission been acting funny and I’m pretty sure it got a transmission change from the previous owner not sure if I should change or not
Probably worth a try with a fluid change. Hopefully they didn't leave the transmission in too bad of shape.
Change your speed sensors. Happened to me twice with the charger it has a fail safe when a sensor goes out the car doesn’t know when to shift gears
@@Evolution_Of_A_Fighter mine not reading the gears at all. No response. DTC threw a code for p0733 for the TCM i believe. But would low fluid cause it to not respond ?
How mach littre needed to dodge charger 2012????
Bako Baban • depends what you mean... The video shows how to measure what comes out. The capacity for the whole thing is about 7 liters. But if you're just changing the fluid it'll probably be around 3.75... you'll still need to measure and use the graph like in this video so you have the proper amount in it... That's very important to get right.
I am changing filter and transmission fluit. I added 6.75 littres because equal to 7 quarz iam true or false?? Thank you for answer again...
Bako Baban • if you're just changing the fluid then 6.75 is too much.. Just watch this video to see how to measure it correctly.
Would it be the same for a 2016
No, you have a different transmission (8-speed). This is for the 2011-2014 models. If you can't find any info on yours just let me know and I'll help.
Mr Ficks if you can help me that would be wonderful
Louie WitEt • is it the base model (SE) ?
Mr Ficks yes it is automatic v6
Louie WitEt • Alright most likely you have a 845re transmission but let's make sure first by entering your VIN here - www.mopar.com/dodge/en-us/my-vehicle/dashboard.html ... You might have to make an account (free).. But it's worth it to check on recall information too. It'll give you the name of your transmission in the vehicle info somewhere.
is it the steps for 2011 3.6
Charles Golden • 2011-2014
Hey man I know this is a year old but can you teach how to switch between manual and drive cause I'm having trouble figuring it out
You just hold it a couple seconds to the right and it goes back to Auto. Or if in 5th if you shift it one more then it goes to Auto again too. Also it should reset when turning the car on and off.
You just shift it once to get into manual mode.

@@mrficks1838 no, my abs light isnt on
Well next I would determine how long it's been since you changed the transmission fluid, the mileage on the car and the driving style. (meaning if the transmission has undergone abuse from abnormal use)
Things are pointing to the TCM being the issue but it may still be an ABS origin point. Try driving with ABS off if you haven't already and see if that changes anything.

@@mrficks1838 thanks man. I75,000 km. And all highway kms. Never beat on
That's good news. Sounds like you just need a transmission fluid change and best to use the Mopar one probably. I've used Royal Purple brand and had good results too.
Hopefully it's just the TCM sensing the old fluid / debris. You might try changing the fluid twice within a few days from each other to 'flush' it a bit. With some luck this will fix that code but you might need to reset the computer with a scan tool after you do the fluid changes.
I took mine to dodge and they wouldnt change it even with cash at hand -_-
Well maybe that's a sign you should change it yourself. you can do it :D.
You know most of the fluid doesn't stay in the pan/filter. The service manual says fluid & filter as 5.3 qts and the overhaul fill (transmission fill) as 8.2 qts. When you replace 3.5 qt, you still have mostly old fluid in your system. This is a good video for replacing the filter but I wouldn't call it replacing the fluid.
You know I'm pretty sure I stated it does less than half but it's still a significant fluid change. Of course it would need to be done multiple times to get closer to "replacement". It's safer than flushing it for sure.
