Like many George Cukor films, it’s silly at first glance but very touching if you look past that. Maggie Smith gives one of the great performances ever.

Love this film. It's a visual delight - sets and costumes are outstanding. Alec McCowan was terrific here, as he was in Hitchcock's Frenzy around the same time. I always wanted the soundtrack album with Tony Hatch's elegant music, but they didn't release one. I did manage to get the large format movie poster, however.

The aging make-up may look a little unconvincing by modern standards - or by contrast with what Maggie Smith actually looks like now she has attained that age herself - but the charm of her performance in this film was always in the way she portrays the same character at different stages in her life from 18 to 80 while she and her 'nephew' travel across Europe together.

Some novels are best performed in your own mind, and I think this is one. Then again, for a time, Greene was catnip for filmmakers.

Re: the make up - actually it's damn good considering Alec McCowen was NINE years Maggie Smith's senior but playing someone young enough to be her son.

I just did some research and found out it's Travels with My Aunt, based on the novel by Graham Greene. He's a great writer, and many of his books have been turned into film. They are definitely worth a read. I remember I was a bit obsessed by him when I was at uni. I read several of his novels, they are well written and very easy to read, and some are quite like a detective novel.

@@bartvanos1466 One thing that threw me and sent me on a wild goose chase was the bus that passes by as they board the taxi. It's a 104, except that's an East London route (Stratford to Becton). The penny finally dropped that the bus was actually a prop. It was a bit of touristic window dressing for the American audience.

Smith stepped in at the last minute when Katharine Hepburn pulled out lacking the confidence to play young at 70+. The film has fun moments but is really a mess and was buried for years.
