- Transgender Pakistanis: The Open Secret | Real Stories
Flamboyant, colourful and eccentric, many among Pakistan's marginalised transgender community scrape a living through dancing, singing and begging on the streets of the country’s economic capital, Karachi. Many others, though, earn money catering for the sexual needs of local men in the city's seedier districts.
Investigating a never-before-seen side of life in Pakistan, this film from Oscar and EMMY award-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy follows the stories of three transgender people, who each represent a different way of life in the country. Maggie is a prostitute who dreams of becoming an air hostess, while Chahat was abandoned by her middle-class family to beg on the streets. Sana is Karachi's most sought-after transgender dancer, desperate to give up the profession after a particularly gruesome gang rape. Is there any hope for these courageous individuals who want to stand out on their own?
With exclusive access, this cutting-edge film goes behind the scenes of the transgender community to uncover the truth behind Pakistan’s Open Secret.
Official Selection, United Nations Association Film Festival

True story: a transgender who I'm not sure was male or just a female dressed up but when my mother was pregnant with me, she went on a rickshaw 🛺. In the middle of the rickshaw driving, she fell right on the street. Before anything could happen, that trans person saved me and my mother's life. She still visits Johar Chowrangi! May Allah bless her! I wish I could repay her but can't visit Pakistan at the moment.
❤❤❤ beautiful little story my friend! Much love to you all from Aotearoa NZ
My mum has taught me from a very young age to respect them. Ever since I can remember, if any trans would come up to us to beg, my mum would not only give them some cash but also strike up a conversation with them. Talk to them, ask if they have had breakfast/ lunch. After some years, they used to come up to mum to say hello and not beg.
Bottom line: Respect all living beings ❤️

When Chahat says " I'd be happy to be a dog so I can live with my mom" - that's really broke my heart. My mom always told me, no matter how's that person are, never ever disrespect them. They're HUMAN.
She would like to be a dog to live with her mother but rejected and go against God's will of being a man ... That is really something heart wrenching......They wanted to have kids but they get removed their reproductive organs for a desire of being a female ..if someone wants to be a cat it doesn't mean he/she goes against nature and does this things. When anyone goes against nature, they have to pay for it...... God give us the right path ...
It’s been 6 years since this documentary was posted. I wonder where the interviewees are today? Each of them had lived through horrific events, yet they were still decent, good-hearted people. Finding a way to follow-up with them at this point would likely prove difficult to impossible, but it would be incredible to locate them. I sincerely hope each of them found their own version of fulfillment, and that all of them found safety.
yes
Yes a follow up will be very interesting pray they be in good shape 🙏
What I honestly don't understand is that to have their sexual identity they accept a life as a guru's slave, as prostitutes that are heavily abused or as outcasts without partners or family. If this is what was in store for me, I would probably forego my sexual identity and live "in the cupboard" as this would bring me more joy and happiness in life - job, family, children, respect... (even though it would not be right or just). I have a job where I have to fake being someone I am not for 10 hours a day and also after work in my private life, but this is how life goes if you want to make a living and be part of society that isnt open to people even just living a different lifestyle or having a more liberal mindset, so I accept that and pay the price of not being able to be myself and truly authentic.
@@sandraweiss3891 agreed but we don't know what they go through, their are probably millions who live the way you are saying .

What you see is the years living as chahat for the guru. The world can black peoples heart to survive it. Thats what I see. Not that its right
I got chills when the man asked Maggie that if she had teenage girls. It is the worst.
For anyone wondering, Pakistan passed a series of new legislations in 2018 and 2019 which gave transgenders the right to get ID cards with X gender, Passports with X gender, separate quotas for them in Universities and Government Jobs. They also contest in elections now. Big hospitals have trasngender wards too. Yesterday Pakistan's first transgender doctor graduated. Now Pakistan also has Transgender lawyers, anchors and they are also getting into other professions.
Sometimes it’s difficult to change the minds of a population who values tradition highly…I really wish the best for these people
It’s beautiful that theyre becoming progressive.

Pakistan’s first transgender doctor just graduated Yesterday 🥳.
I’m happy that the doctor showed actual concern for Maggie
Right? He was non judgmental and asked straightforward questions in a non threatening way. He expressed concern for Maggie without raising his voice or being upset. Even when Maggie disagreed with his comments, he didn't react. This attitude should be more mainstream.
She compared herself to a pigeon and said she would rather be a dog to live with her mother. That should tell you something about the emotional damage that rejecting people does...regardless of agreeing or disagreeing with her life, nobody should have to go through that. I hope she has a better future.
Love should be unconditional !
@Ray Hernandez wow this is your response to that
"It"? Wow! You're the one who need psychiatric help.....
@Ray Hernandez I know full well what a transgender is. I'm just saying to call them "it" seems wrong. They are people, after all, right?
@Ray Hernandez You do realize that trans people have been using bathrooms corresponding to their identity for years without issue, right? The only reason people like you are thinking about it now and making ignorant assumptions is because the LGBT community is in the social spotlight more than ever before. If that weren't the case, you would have no idea that transgender people regularly use bathrooms corresponding to their identity and it wouldn't be a problem for you, just like it shouldn't be a problem regardless if you know about it or not because guess what? The vast majority of trans people are not "sick". They're just people like the rest of us.
Chahat will get heaven not those who tortured her mentally or physically. Because she has such a noble heart which many so called normal humans don't have.
30% reservations have been provided to dalits in India in every government sector. Frist try to do something like that than we will talk.
@Shahrukh Afzal our house maid (a girl from Dalit community, named - Soma Bagdi, she has a noble heart as well) gets her tiffin from our kitchen in the morning on the same dining table we share to dine. It's the practice which was introduced by my father himself and it's still continued by me and my family members. That's how I (as you asked me only) treat Dalits in my country (a single example practiced everyday apart from the other examples practiced quite frequently to Dalits by me). Now I wish you treat minorities better in your society.
@Shahrukh Afzal czcams.com/video/WDqZJjfVfrk/video.html
@Shahrukh Afzal It wasn't a panegyrical statement but a little good start from me against the discriminations present in Hinduism. You can also find these as Shia-Sunni in Islam (you should also treat that better in your community), Catholic-Protestant in Christianity, Mahayana-Hinayana in Budhaism, Digambara-Svetambara in Jainism etc.
Exactly💞👍🌈
Any chance of a follow up documentary? This needs more attention.

I hope that things change for the better, there are good people
I think we as the LGBTQ+ community in the west need to watch more documentaries like this and remember and acknowledge the struggles of our brothers and sisters in other countries. We need to stand with them and support them. ❤️
Well said
I think we could support them by being more conservative like they are. All they want is acceptance and to blend in. Yet we have people making up new words and inventing genders making a mockery of their struggle as if someone calling themselves “catgender” is the same as an actual transsexual with life long dysphoria.
@@tula1433 how can we be more conservative? conversativeness goes against any freedom we have

jan jansen Yeah. They hate terrorism and try their best to cut them out. There are some villages which are very conservative but the Cities are very modern
India is so liberal that a liberal in pakistani will be termed as a radical conservative in India.
AKASH SINGH as if you know anything, your prejudice and hate is speaking, you've never lived or visited and can't talk.
Not meaning to be rude but ...
aren't the Gurus more like glorified pimps ?
This system is disgusting and watching this made me so sad .. and mad at the same time.
This system has been there for centuries since the British Raj
That is exactly what this is. They try to skirt around it calling it a "custom" acting like they're doing a good thing for the girls. In reality they're just operating human trafficking rings in plain sight, keeping the girls as slaves and indentured servants and profiting off of their hard work.
Pimps operate the exact same way.. They promise the girls that they're going to be taken care of, protected, that they can have anything they want, lots of pretty new clothes, drugs, money, filet mignon, etc.. But once the girls are under their control the pimp stops treating them like princesses and starts forcing them to work all day and night. The girls are constantly abused, and have to make more and more money, because they "owe" their pimp. If the girls get sick or if they can't make enough money they beaten and starved, raped, sold off to another pimp, even killed.
The gurus use all the same tactics, it's the same game with a different name. The saddest part is that this appears to be an acceptable practice and the authorities are not interfering. And, almost as bad and equally disturbing, it appears that there are people in the comments who are genuinely defending this inhumane practice. That actually view it as an innocent cultural custom that westerners cannot possibly understand, SMH.
As an out transsexual woman I am blessed top have been born where I was instead of here
Joselyn Mikolajczak and yet you’re still not free
@@evangeline77x There is Nothing - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING - innocent about this practice... and yes, I agree with you - same game, different name .. :(

5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
Hi there Ross Moli you see I am not here to judge this person (Chahat),you have to see and understand what this person lacks and needs. Which is obviously love that she should have received from her family if she has no other choice but this to survive and make money then like I said I am no one to judge because I have my own flaws we are all born sinners no one is perfect, If this person was taught of Heavenly Father and the ways and the love that Heavenly Father is greater than any love on this Earth then maybe it would have been a whole different situation. To judge someone you have to be perfect. So before judging anyone how about we show them love and teach them of the TRUTH.

I'm from more rich and Islamic country
True we have higher standards life than them BUT only If we hide ourselves
The punishment of being out trans or dressing in public here is beheaded
It's very dangerous and taboo here
The reason for me to write this comment is all the nice people in the comments section
I can't believe that there such nice and kind people
I wish you happiness and good karma
Good luck to you, and be safe!!

This is so weird to watch, people getting crazier each day
@greenteajnn ur weird for thinking this is normal, your Either women or man weirdo
@@bonsita5341these days body mutilation and mental illness is trending 😂
I live in Pakistan and this video has broken my heart. I wish all transgenders get respectable jobs. Well, now they have their ID cards as ordered by supreme court of Pakistan. I hope they will get jobs.
“They’re ruing our society” no the hate is ruining it
Ulimi Ulabi What u mean??? Pakistan is the worst islamic country by far
@Ulimi Ulabi soory but that would go to turkey
@@heemabaily4007 I thought Turkey is not that restricted
@Ulimi Ulabi whom u dsnt
@Ulimi Ulabi They're the purist muslims, they follow the Quran strictly, that's why that faith is so disgusting
Fabulous amazing docu....Looks like a movie....Bravo to the director...and I loved the Voice of the Narrator so unique...🥰🥰🥰👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾Five star Docu...This a real life of Pakistan Transgender...
Everybody has the right to live their life the way they choose. As long as there not harming anyone. We as a whole should just respect each other more.❤
i want to tell you one thing is tthat the real channel is the best best channel on the youtube. always gives us different kind of documentries to watch.
trang himachal
trang himachal But it is NOT viewed in God's word. All I see is distorted views and thoughts. Biblical christians will agree with these statements.
Ronald Keller AMMMENNN IMMA PK AND I DON'T BELIEVE IN ANY OF THIS STUFF
...”I’d be happy to be a dog just so I could live with my mother”.....what is this world where human beings have to feel like this ? 😞
And unfortunately we are the same humans who let feel these types of humans feel this
Humans are horrible in many ways. I agree with you. Watching this made me cry because it brought into perspective of how the world can be so cruel and ruthless because of unkind people in it.....
😭
Any updates about Chatat? She’s so adorable soul. I hope she found a happiness and reunited with her mother:(
I really wish there was a way we could find out what ended up happening to these people, especially Chahat and Maggie. I really feel for them both. ❤️
i seriously want to be friends with chahat. i want to help her. if i can.
she genuinely seems like a really nice lady all in need for a friend, companion anyone for her.
and not to forget she is beautiful~~
i hope she gets happiness that she deserves one day~
padma c I know :( I can't stop crying I seriously wish I could help her
the thing is there are thousands of chahats out there. so you starting by one can make such a difference.
She's actually good looking. Imagine her impact on women if she's straight. He can be a celebrity :)
padma c its very painful...🇲🇺
monica basilonia I felt the same way
Tears rolled my eyes when chahat said I would love to be a dog and live with my mother forever....
But her guru is very mean .
We need an update on their lives. Please make a part 2 of this documentary.
All Arabs nation will have to give account to Allah for the atrociousness of masochism and xenofhonia( hate.slavery.corruption and impunity .......😔
Ok so men hate them, right ? Then who picks them up when they pull over the car ?
Hypocrisy, no ?
Would have called hypocrisy if the same men who hate them would pull over car but that's not the case so hypocrisy doesn't seem the right word.
Men are individuals and all individuals are different, so can't say its hypocrisy since the same man haven't done this.
@@Keniz99 Men are individuals but that is not the explanation here...
@Alisha JacksonIt will make sense when you have the necessary mechanism to process it......And please get a life...you need it....
Bunch of hypocrisy. They’re probably all married too.
Chahat seems so lonely... I feel bad for her
Good is so sad
i agree,i really felt so bad at the last
You feel bad for him?
Yeah I feel bad for him
If a person truly wants nothing to do with something or wants nothing to do with a particular group than they wouldn't waste their time on watching transgender videos just so they can comment negative stuff so you guys are either in the closet wanting to come out.. or jealous either or
A follow up please....i often wonder about maggie, chahat and sana :(
Transgender are not bad the work they do for living is bad and we need to realize it
Thy talk about india and pakistan .. how much we hate each other , little do we know how the common people share the same plight from both the countries .Who is worried about the wars and politics when we have such heartbreaking stories to be worried more for !
- Love from a common Indian !
Sugandha Dogra ❤️
i can add up one more thing... don't you think this is just same on both side...what diffrence do we have besides religion.
Sugandha Dogra Why don't you spend some time in Pakistan?I am sure you will notice the difference and realize why we are enemies.
blyat man please explain why enemies?
Alicia D. Sorry but I don't understand your intentions of asking this question. Are you a Pakistani with a western name trying to lecture me on whose fault it really is that we are enemies or you are a westerner totally unaware of what's going around the world. If it's the latter case I am happy to explain.
I'm speechless. Can't stop my tears. This world's a cruel place.
Alveena Tauqir I agree, I’m so saddened because of this. This is unbelievable, I feel so afraid knowing this is actually going on in our world. When I think about my life an then take a look at others all I can do is be humble an great full for gods grace, but I can’t help but wonder why my god just why .
Alveena Tauqir u and my thinking same
I think people like us, can Change this. This doesn't have to Stay like this
there is so much pain we can never think of i has been 5 years since i watched this documentary and evertime i see it it is more painful
