      I have sailed cats for 45 years , been a USCG 1600 ton inspected mate for 22 years and I find your statement about cats being "immune to swells" to be QUITE the contrary !!! Because of the buoyancy configuration of catamarans , ( 2 linear rails ) , they have a strong tendency to " Hobby horse " in light winds and " Pogo hop " at speed !!! Another good analogy about the rides of catamarans on the open ocean would to be to imagine laying a sheet of plywood on the surface of the ocean and trying to stand on it !!! This four point spread of the bouyancy points dramatically increases the rolling and pitching motions !!! Neither of which do I prefer for a cruising platform ! Granted they are considerably faster , more spacious , and ergonomically more comfortable , but noTTT "immune to swell " !!! Also you are QUITE right about the increased expense of cats due to gear breakage ! Because of the nature of catamaran designs cats experience MUCH greater "shock loads" as well as the "twisting loads" between the 2 hulls !!! And at anchor catamarans will tend to swing and wander MUCH more than comparable monohulls due to their lighter displacements and increased windage !!! So I guess what it reaLLy boils down to is what a person prefers and what they are willing to trade off for performance and / or comfort !!! Personally I opted for a "ULDB" monohull or a 58 foot wind surfer because I liked the increased stability of a surfing or planing monohull without the sacrifice of speed over a displacement monohull !!! Catamarans however fun and exhilarating they may be , wouldn't be my 1rst choice for an open ocean cruising platform !!! But with aLL off that being said.........to each their own !!! Fair winds and following seas 2 you !!!

    Very nice......obviously long and lean and build for speed. If you fly a hull is there any safety system to prevent a tip over, or to prevent it from digging the leeward hull in too deep and turning turtle ( upsidedown) ?

    • @angela1984a
      @angela1984a Před 2 lety +1

      I don't think a 55 ft cat as light as this is supposed to be digging a hull in too deep and turning turtle... That being said though - trimarans give a lot more feedback as to when they risk becoming overpowered compared to catamarans. Sailing La Vagabonde are going with a trimaran to replace their Outremer catamaran. They have done videos about this. Check out the Rapido 60 and the Bañulsdesign/McConaghy 53 trimaran. Imagine a 65-68 ft trimaran with three cabins and two heads. Something like that would probably easily outrun any kind of weather one would like to avoid...

    These are amazing cats my question is one for those much better qualified and knowledgeable than me. I look at these big cats as a method of exploring the world, cruising far away places and exploring those islands that only a private boat of some sort can reach. Is a Gunboat a catamaran that can handle those extreme weather conditions that you may have to go through in the Pacific or North Atlantic, can it handle the bad weather and big seas that a slower catamaran that is designed more for cruising can go through. Speed is exciting and exhilarating and is one method of trying to avoid bad or extreme weather but if you get caught is a Gunboat the catamaran that you want to be in. I would like to hear the opinions of those that have sailed the oceans and been through some of the extremes that nature can throw at sailors and hear their opinions on the Gunboat as an ocean cruising catamaran. Please no abuse or criticism this is an honest question.

      Gunboat has filed for bankruptcy. Although I suppose it doesn't mean it is necessarily the end of the company, it isn't a good thing for them!

      +AlexJamesIsWeird Chapter 11 is not RIP. A lot of companies come back from Chapter 11. Maybe you are a sock puppet for Hudson Yacht and Marine who refused to do warranty work under the terms of the contract and are being sued by GB. The world needs a lot more companies like GunBoat and we dont need any more Hudson Yacht and Marine's in this world. Lets hope the best for the people who make the foiling G4 a reality.

      I've definitely got nothing to do with any companies and if I was buying a new cat the Gunboat 55 is top of my list! I really hope that they do come back from it :D

    I can't understand what he is doing with the helm. It seems to take a lot of effort to stay on course and then he lets the wheel loose for a second. And the jumble of lines going into the large line holder seems like it would be a tangle tub. Personally, I don't like this boat.

      @David Miorgan David, for some reason a lot of idiots seem to post things like "Your not a sailor", then follow it up with the most stupid justification for saying that. I'm not saying you are one of them, but they are out there. As to your response, this boat has a serious amount of weather helm, which does happen. What typically doesn't is totally jacking the boat to windward then releasing the helm, grabbing it, jacking it back, and repeating.
      What you are missing is the understanding of what is happening The wind doesn't want to push the boat sideways, it wants to turn the boat into the wind. The boat doesn't want to go straight, it's made to go straight by a combination of keel/dagger board and rudders with a balance of sails. I would have thought you would know this but if you only had a head sail, your boat would actually want to turn down wind. If you only had a main sail, it would only want to turn upwind. This is of course depending where the center of effort is. But regardless, for sure not all 60' and under boats require constant adjustments.
      Here is a video taken during my second Atlantic Crossing. Now, we are in the same amount of wind as this Gunboat but only doing 10 to 11 knots. That's under a triple reefed main and about half my small self tacking jib on a boat built for charter. If you pay close attention there is nearly zero effort on the helm to keep the boat tracking straight. czcams.com/video/MiaNUuyOY5I/video.html
      As for falling in love with a Gunboat, nope. There are boat's besides mine I'd fall in love with, Series 6, HH, SF, and a few others. For sure not one that has in inside helm though.
