      @meadmaker4525 Před 4 lety +9

      @@timh1187 - It's a decent compromise, but I'd still rather have the helm where the Gunboat has it. Getting rid of the fly bridge/cocktail lounge BS they usually put on the roof lowers the center of effort of the sailplan, giving the boat a better performance profile and requiring less mast height. From my experience, people who want fly bridges don't actually sail, they sit at dock and throw parties to show off their toy. Being stuck out in awful weather whilst having to helm the boat is one of the worst things about sailing for most who actually sail. IMHO, Gunboat did what everyone else should have been doing for years. It's not that hard. It's just that most catamarans don't actually go anywhere, so people want a fly bridge for more guests while at dock.

    • @hereintranzit
      @hereintranzit Před 4 lety +5

      @Meadmaker 452, those catamarans with flybridge are island hopping charter pontoons. They’re not designed for the serious cruising around the world with passages in excess of 3000 nautical miles before seeing any land on the horizon. Charter market creates the greatest demand for pleasure vessels of all kinds and most manufacturers are aiming towards that particular market. Very few live-aboard cruisers buy brand new boats and most end up buying project used boats which were previously commissioned for charter.
      Gunboat cats’ are aimed towards the “I don’t care what the cost is, just give me the fastest cat out there to impress my friends” kind of folks, not towards the “Joe the plumber” who wants to quit his job and go cruising in a sailboat. No working stiff will ever be able to afford even a 20 year old Gunboat cat let alone one of these new Gb-68’s !
      Put it this way; there are 7+ billion of us on this earth and only two a$$holes own a Gunboat-68 and most that could afford to waste $8.5 million on a floating chunk of carbon fiber with spartan accommodations are not interested in the least about it. That’s why Gunboat will go bankrupt again very soon. They’ve only built two (2) of these boats so far and it looks like it’s the end of the line. HH catamarans are every bit as high performance as the G’boats are and come at less than half of the price of the same size G’boat and most who like the french built boats will settle for the Outremer at 1/3 the cost of the G’boat and a bit less performance.
      In the case of this 68 footer you pay about $4 million for the 100% carbonfiber build and another $4.5 million for the “Gunboat” name. Even most filthy rich a$$holes are not that stupid to waste that kind of dough on a frigging name !!!

    By the way, it's high speed, not high velocity. Speed is distance over time. Velocity is speed in a given direction. If you're sailing a direct course from A to B, two points that are 20 nautical miles apart south to north, and your speed is 20 kts, then your velocity is 20 kts northerly. If, however, you're sailing upwind at 20 kts and you have to tack, the distance you have to sail might be 40 nautical miles. Your speed is still 20 kts, but your velocity is 10 kts northerly.

      All designs have pros and cons. The forward cockpit is interesting, but can't be great in foul weather. On the other hand, Chris White boats and Gunboats are probably fast enough to avoid some bad weather (along with modern weather routing).

      Yes. And in at least one case a Gunboat 60 owner has done a conversion to all electric propulsion with power coming from hydrogeneration (effectively letting the props act like little generating turbines when under sail) and the existing solar (and a generator for backup). Uses a BMW i3 battery pack under each of the beds in the stern cabins.

      Gunboat uses a massive amount of carbon fiber instead of fiberglass in these boats, making them lighter, stronger and faster than pretty much anything else out there in their class. The materials are stupidly expensive, so they have to make up for it in the price tag. For those who want a big, comfy cat that can turn on the speed and pretty much smoke anything else sailing, this is what they buy. Comparatively speaking, a Lagoon of the same relative size (62' class) is almost the same amount of money with nowhere near the performance. In the end, if you're spending 7 digits on a boat, you have to think about what you're gonna use it for and buy something that suits your needs/interests.

    What an impractical place to carry SCUBA tanks. Carry them across the entire vessel because you use them at the transom...nope..no damage will happen along the entire length of the boat....really?? AFT LOCKERS PEOPLE....long supply hose from the compressor in the forward lockers to aft tank locker is much cheaper than repairing damaged decks.
    Having said....I do love Gunboat!

      @@thehurricane218 no one, but while getting off the boat is easy anywhere, getting back on USUALLY happens at the transom mainly due to the very high freeboard and no boarding ladder. So your still carrying tanks un-necessarly across the entire deck.

      Garland Garrett I have honestly never seen a gunboat with the tanks NOT in the front lockers. Have you ever actually looked at big cats before? There is no room in the back. Its full of engines and stuff.
      You sound lazy, you cannot walk some tanks 40 feet? You need mommy to wipe your chin after she burps you as well? There there now here is a biddy. Do you want the biddy?

      @@thehurricane218 while I get that the tanks are in the front lockers, they do not, and should not be. Carrying them over the decks isn't about being lazy it's about minimizing the potential for damage to decks by accidently dropping one. I have and do currently carry hundreds of tanks and use them everyday. I'm a 25+ year diving instructor and have 35+ years of diving experience with 12 years of commercial diving exp. as well. I don't think that those who know me would ever call me lazy or that I need my chin wiped. Certainly -thanks for your insightful comments. I'm just making an observation and trying to help out owners to prevent any damages. Many cats have an aft locker exactly for tanks.

      Garland Garrett I don't care who you are or what you say you do or what people who you say you know you say.
      I don't think I have ever seen ANY gunboats or other big sailing cats (except maybe the 90 foot) with enough room in the back for tanks. Its just not logically possible. You do understand logic, right? You cannot lug a tank or two 40 feet. You are lazy and stupid and don't understand cats much. We get it. Point noted.
      You sound like you:
      A) Are a lazy person who doesn't know what they are talking about
      And
      B) Someone needs his biddy.
      Having a conversation with you is basically pointless. You think you know it all. But you really don't know much. Sad.

      Invest correctly and you may be an owner one day. NOT in the stock market mind you, which is due a total collapse. I can't afford one either, but I aim for a yacht one day. Do your research and invest in things which will go up, as all else falls around you. In addition, there will be used bargains to be had. Be sure of that.

    High velocity on a catamaran is the problem (safety). High velocity "on" the water instead of "in" the water like a monohull is just asking for trouble!

      @David miorgan - That light weight, that is mostly above the water, is what makes it unsafe compared to a monohull. For day sailing and fairly short sails, catamarans are fine for amateurs, but for the long haul, a monohull is the only way to go (safely)!

    • @vokstar

      The great thing about these catamarans is their inherent speed, this is the cruising spec and did 20 knots during one of it's first sails. You don't need to use all that performance of course, so you can put reefs in and safely sail in the low teens, with reefs in, on autopilot, where as on a monohull you would be pushing the boat to it's near limits to get close to those speeds.
