It depends on the weather but by the kids half term in October they are all dug up. Early October usually before penetrating frosts. I start them into growth sometime between late March and late May.
I have been loosing my Ensetes year after year, with this method all have survived ! How many years could they be kept going ? Kris, your the man ! Many Thanks.
They theoretically could be kept going until they flower but as they get bigger each year they are harder to move and harder to dry out so a bit more likely to rot when they get very big.
HI Kris, Last October I bought 3 "end of season " Ensetes, from our local B & Q . I followed your directions for overwintering them (in the airing cupboard) I brought them out a month ago and now they are ab-sol-u-lutely brilliant. They are now the sort of thing one could pay £15 each She who should be obeyed is dead impressed, Many Thanks, Rob.
What would happen if you stored it this way but the room in your house is warm? the only place I could put mine is a bedroom which will have the radiator on during winter, many thanks
Hi just wondering if you could help me kris . I stored my one year old banana plant as instructed . Now it is showing alot of leaves but they are all small and producing more leaves but still small . Just wondering if you had any advice for me . Thanks Tony Ashmore
Does this technique equally apply to Musas? I marveled at your video you made on 31 October 2015 - my bananas, dahlias and ricinus have all been hit by one night of frost in mid-October - and I live in SW France!
No frosts at all here or likely for at least 10days. Musa do not like being dry stored, prefering to keep there roots alive during winter. They can survive being dried out for short periods but not ideal.
+YorkshireKRIS Oh heck! Have just chopped its leaves off, hosed off the soil and it now sits upsidedown in a pot in conservatory!! Test question - is there a definitive way of establishing whether it is an ensete or a musa? I assumed it is of the same family, much like datura or brugansia! I did take a couple of photos of it out of its pot and a subsequent couple of the cut off leaves. Perhaps you could offer some pointers as to how to tell the difference. It was a present with no label!
Hi Kris Just dug up my ensete it has done well, now ready too dry for winter and like a prat i have cut the roots a bit high up do you think i have killed it ? Still going to dry it got some sulphur powder ready, love you channel just need moral support lol cheers Dave
Dave Bee Hi Dave, It's ok if you've cut a little too high as long of most of the base is intact it should be fine. Rot in the main issue so dry REALLY well and fingers crossed. I won't be digging mine up until early October,.. hopefully. Thanks for watching
Thanks for that, still got roots on it but its a flat bottom , it will sit well on the soil next year drying well if i had known about this warm weather might have let it stay out longer cheers
Hi Kris, I bought a red banana a few...maybe three or four weeks ago and I have been told that it's too young for dry storage. How would you suggest I store it please?
YorkshireKRIS is sulphur required at all? I’m a week in in to drying my ensete exactly as you’ve done it and it’s at the stage where it’s ready to store away.

Glad the method has worked well for you. It's not 100% successful but what is?
Green Sulphur powder has now been banned but Yellow Sulphur is still available and will work just about the same.
very good, i dug my first one up today so this is very useful info-thanks
@fieldfest Glad it is of some use. I've dug up my second and will dig up the third after the heatwave!

Simply speaking, musa grow tall quickly with thin stems compared to ensetes that grow thicker stems.
hi when do you dig up the ensete for dry storage and when do you put them back outside

hi where do you get the Green Sulphur Powder from cant seem to find it anywhere thanks

Hi Suzanne Porter, if small you'll need to keep it slowly growing like a house plant. Just watch out for green fly.
Thank you x
I can only find yellow sulpher power is this the same?
Yes green was taken off the market. Yellow works well
@@YorkshireKRIS thanks I didn't use it last year but going give it ago
would you say that this is the best way to over winter an ensete
The best way is to keep the way going and slowly growing over winter but this requires a lot of space and a heated area.
+YorkshireKRIS yeah I tried that and rotted my ensete out lol!
Can I use yellow sulphur ?
Deane Boggis yes you can
