They harbour slugs snails and other nasties should they go? The leaves are gone but the stubs ..... linger on slowly rotting. I'm in Gloucestershire. Thanks.

    Kiwi here, when trying to establish tree-ferns especially in Summer-dry areas, then the trick is to install a tiny irrigation sprinkler at he top of the tree fern. They naturally drink NOT just from the roots, but from water trickling down from the top. In Southern NZ most tree ferns live on the "We_t Coast" . The West Coast being famous for annual rainfall of between 1500mm to 4000+mm annual rainfall. Seemed to me that your tree fern had lots of healthy new growth coming out the top of it. I live on the drier, 600mm annual East Coast and Tree ferns are tricky to get started here, but once established in a well watered and partly shaded garden, they do well. Yes some cark it along the way. Keeping them wet to get properly established in the first instance, is the key.

  • @unojayc
    @unojayc Před 5 dny

    It's a big commitment keeping a tree fern hydrated. I have a mister on a timer which helps. But I still give it a soak with a hose. Shade from my Eucalyptus Nitens helps. Try and create their Australian habitat. Each fern has a tag and number and one can trace where it was harvested from and by doing so you can have information on local rainfall etc.

  • @davegreenthumb
    @davegreenthumb Před 5 dny

    I’ve purchased three tree ferns two were 3 ft already growing in pots ,one was a 6 ft trunk .the best one is the 3 ft it has grown at a incredible rate it has put on 1 foot of growth in 3 years,the second is the other about 6 inches.both send out loads of fronds all summer.the worst is the tallest small fronds which sends out fronds about 6 weeks later,why is this all ways watered well

    • @YorkshireKRIS
      @YorkshireKRIS Před 5 dny

      @davegreenthumb I think the tallest ones find it harder to establish, and to keep thriving as they're a larger area of exposed roots that need a moist environment to do well

It is quite close to Musa basjoos which are producing several pups, and grasses I used as a boarder between my part of the garden and the grandchildren’s area. We are a 3 generation household. Can I leave the fern there if it’s happy? I’d love your advice. Thank you. Joan
