Keneally is a serious badass. And not just on guitar. He plays several instruments, and can keep up with Steve Vai. Can't say that about many other people in the world.

Funny enough, literally everyone that's ever stepped on stage with Vai. It's one of the things I appreciate about the man the most; he has no qualms about inviting musicians that appear on pair or even better than him AND will, unlike Vai, play several instruments during the show. Not many people are big that way.
(though I'm sure Vai can play anything at least decently).

I remember seeing this tour going way back in the late nineties, in little old Adelaide, South Australia. And that "second" guitarist, Kenneally, is truly amazing. But then again, the whole band was brilliant.

depends on the piece ,no? But theres ppl who does that. Pete Thorn have also walked in to sessions and played stuff he just once.
i think that was the case when he went on trial for guns n roses.
The rec company wouldnt let nobody hear the studio work, so the manager gave Thorn a listen on his phone , then he went in 8 minutes later and playd it.

Yeah! Lol. Maybe via would be good on bass? Lol he would probably suck actually. See, I’m a former hood guitarist. Like a really good rythm guitar player…… which is making a joke about how I don’t play guitar very well. But I SHINE on bass. People say, if you are bad at guitar you should play bass. I play bass much better than most bassists or guitarists I meet. I think that’s a silly point to make. I joke by saying I play “lead bass” to each there own. All the guitarists that are better on guitar than me, suck even worse on bass than I could have imagined. Just a funny stereotype about bassists or guitarists. Steryotyoes are fun! I play too many instruments to name. All very mediocre. But still more instruments than you can probably come up with off the top of your head. I don’t learn long or hard enough and I get bored easy!

@@SirPraiseSun I just feel like Via is one of those guitar junky guys. He can shred and he’s great on guitar, but I feel like if you put a bass in his hands he’d get confused. Most every time I hand a bass to a (pro) guitarist I play with, they barely play it… treat it like it’s some sort of foreign object their body needs to stay away from lol. Like, I just heard you shred on guitar, go ahead and do that on the bass. You don’t have to go “plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk” a lot of people are under the impression that bass is just “more simple guitar” and that’s just not the case. A guitarist usually has a pre conceived disdain for bass guitar, and when they go to play it they play it with that disdain and MAKE bass a simple little toy. I’m not an amazing guitar player but I play every single instrument mediocre. Only instruments I’ve struggled with and haven’t tried again are brass. You can make any instrument hard to play if you play it with skill.

I reject the idea of music competition. Does everything have to be a fight.

That,s the reason why I don't have friends that play guitar, everyone is always centered around competition.

Its just for show. Mike Keneally and Vai are both masters of their game and very good friends (and both came up under the grand master himself Frank Zappa). Its just call and response with a bit of show for the fans.

No, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a competition on the side. At the end of the day music is subjective, but as far as ‘skill’ goes, some people have more than others.

Many great lead guitarists, but Satriani, Vai and Malsteen were awesome.

Steve and Dave Weiner should play this again for some fun. Even get Ralph out to mime Weiner for fun.
