      Great finds, Lance. I really enjoy seeing the unused content for this masterpiece of a game. The unused scene before the actual scene they decided on is amazing. I love how they went from a caring and nurturing Wet Nurse, to a violent predator that smashes down ready to attack.

      Lance, I love bloodborne, always has.
      When I changed my name, I changed it to Lance, cause of the association with bloodborne it had for me, personally.
      This happened while I was looking for a new name, and I stumbled onto your videos and channel at the same time.
      I was looking for something victorian but modern, and this along with ith your videos, helped me pick right. It all clicked. After having searched for a proper name for a long time.
      By then, I knew it was the perfect name for me.

    Personally I still really like the theory that the Wet Nurse is "created" by Mergo instead of being a separate entity. More like a manifestation of Mergo's need for a mother instead of a creature.
    The idea of it not being it's own entity is also supported by how you don't get any echoes or message from defeating it, those only show up after Mergo stops crying and "dies".

      Personally, I'm partial to the interpretation that the Wet Nurse IS real, but that she may be severely de-powered when we encounter her: The statue in the Grand Cathedral depicts a winged, headless woman in robes pouring a liquid down upon the altar and effigies below. This could be a representation of the Wet Nurse, and her giving her blood away to the Healing Church, thus explaining why the Wet Nurse herself does not bleed... (Some people argue that she doesn't bleed because she's an illusion, but the closest precedent we have to that is Rom's spawn, and they do bleed contrary to the Wet Nurse.)
      Also, you're probably aware of the fact that Bloodborne borrows a lot from Shintoism and Buddhism, right? Well, having analysed Bloodborne as well as I can with that in mind, I've arrived at the conclusion that the Moon Presence and the Wet Nurse (along with Mergo) are probably counterparts to each-other. To be more specific, the Moon Presence is Bloodborne's version of the goddess of death in Shintoism, Izanami, while the Wet Nurse is Bloodborne's version of the goddess of mercy in Buddhism, Thousand-armed Kannon/Avalokiteśvara (who is also, along with Amida Buddha/Amitaabha and Seishi/Mahaasthaamapraapta, a part of the Welcoming Approach -- a trinity of deities that welcome the dying into the Pure Land/Paradise, thus making her a kind-of goddess of death as well). Kannon was said to have grown her thousand arms in order to help everyone and this could metaphorically be thought of as the Wet Nurse giving away her blood, so that she may "be there" for every person who has taken her blood into their being.

      One pattern I noticed is that true Great Ones from the nightmare never fight you in person.
      They are always "X of Y":
      The Wet Nurse of Mergo.
      The Orphan Of Kos.
      The Presence of the Moon.
      My theory is that they all lack a physical form, so they either use a host (Maria, Gherman, Micolash) as a proxy or create a new body meant to represent and protect them based on their mental and emotional state, so it takes both the form of the thing they want to be or just desire, twisted by what they consider "threatening".
      Mergo created the wet nurse because he was taken away from Yharnam. he wanted his mother to protect him so his need created a surrogate, a wet nurse to take care of him, whose form is based on the Shadow Of Yharnam, pthumeru royal guards who to a child like Mergo would seem the strongest warriors ready to die for him, lacking a visible body because of Mergo's lack of a maternal figure.
      The Orphan I think is born from Kos' grief on losing her child before his ascension (mother is dead, her baby taken), so it takes the shape of a withered fetus, stuck forever in this unfinished form and without any chance to be "born", mixed with Gherman or a hunter, who to her eyes is the perfect killing machine.
      the Moon's presence I have no clue. it looks like an overgrown screaming messanger, twisted, gutted, and blackened by rot into a bestial form. I guess it's meant to represent an eternal servant and aid, who would help the hunter to the point of rotting away, while assuming the shape of a beast, the hunter's true enemy.

    @Hennichell Před 3 lety +494

    The fifth revision is so wild. The early ones with her cradling Mergo show an undeniable tenderness and care, but that last one? That looked so... well, inhuman. As if the Wet Nurse was only an animal spotting a threat and immediately going feral to protect the young out of instinct. Maybe that's why they went for this one, although with some fixes to make her fall more ethereal and graceful; the others were too... relatable to a human perspective, I think, and the Great Ones tend to be everything but that.

    • @Kmi_Sama
      @Kmi_Sama Před 3 lety +61

      Well, the Great Ones have some sort of empathy for Humans, they like to interact, like the Brian of Mensis or even The Moon Presence itself. But I see what you mean by "too human" to be the final product.
      As for the Slam Dunk, i think it's kinda interesting, reminds me of When Oceiros slams Ocellote into the ground and goes mad. Bloodborne had a lot of things that were moved on to DS3, so maybe they decided that this whole baby-hurting thing would be moved on and that Mergo would be an actual Wet-nurse.

    • @Hennichell
      @Hennichell Před 3 lety +45

      @@Kmi_Sama Hmm, I wouldn't say the Great Ones have "empathy" for the humans - that would imply they somehow can put themselves on our proverbial shoes and come to some sort of understanding of our thoughts and feelings, which doesn't seem to be the case here (at least for me). If anything, they seem to have "sympathy", although their ways to show it may come across in a badly executed way; like, blessing a woman's womb with a Great One's child when the Blood Moon rises could, in a way, be seen as an act of good faith - I myself hardly think that they do it out of malice - but think of Arianna, and how she looks everything but blessed after giving birth to... that thing. So yeah, I do see them as sympathetic, but they seem to lack the empathy to actually get us, you know, so their actions tend to bring more harm then good regardless of benign intentions.
      And oh god, YES, the fifth revision reminded me so much of Oceiros' fight - what it would have been, at least. Two bosses who took upon the task of protecting a child from harm, but ended up being the reason said child got harmed anyway.
      Lesson of the day: don't be a child on a Soulsborne universe

    • @android19willpwn
      @android19willpwn Před 3 lety +8

      also the fact that she's performing the motions of picking up and cradling a baby that has no physical form is just kind of silly for what can be the final boss of the game.

      @That_One_Xatu Před 3 lety +22

      @@Hennichell It's been a while since I've read up on Bloodborne lore, but I wanna say the reason the Great Ones endow the wombs of mortals with their children is because the Great One's themselves cannot have children on their own, but yet they want to (for an unexplained reason), so they must find surrogates to do so.
      Whether their reason for wanting children is to exert power/have better influence over mortals with a conduit that is on the mortal plane, or due to them possessing feelings and emotions that humans could understand, like loneliness or wishing to share their gifts with others; all we really know is they can't do it by themselves.

    I love how the moon peeks just over the edge of the arena. It's as if the Moon Presence is watching you fight the nurse. I've also noticed that the moon shifts positions and size as you ascend through the tower. Maybe I'm just rambling and maybe it's just an inconsequential environmental detail, but to me it looks like the MP is watching you every step of the way.
    Edit: 1 year later rewatching this video I realize the moon in the beginning is blocking the view of the mountains on the horizon... it's not in the sky, it's literally an object floating mid-air. It's not even in scale with anything else in the environment. Don't know why but that creeps me out so much.

      If you look at the art book, the moon actually does end up looking like an eye, or pupil (in the Japanese version, eye is often 瞳, which is pupil). This is most apparent in the art for the Hunter's Dream, where the moon makes a pupil and the background makes an eye shape (👁‍🗨 this icon basically).

    3 years ago it was entire enemies and storylines. 3 months ago it was entire scrapped map layouts and NPCs. Just yesterday I watched a video restoring scrapped voicelines into their proper order. Now today I'm being shown an entire cutscene's lifecycle!
    This game's code itself has more layers than even the mind-bending lore it was supposed to convey.

      @internetdragon7624 Před 3 lety +26

      I know a bit of game creation, so there is a possible explanation why this could've been previously missed for the 5 years the game's been out.
      Bloodborne's files have rather recently been put under such a focused lens, so, the explanation could be that;
      Some of the cut dialogs don't have attached subtitle files. Meaning theres no immediate line of code saying something along the lines of "If Audio File X plays, display X subtitles at X,Y,Z coordinates, changing if displayed at X resolution, and change to section 2 at X interval, etc." To put this in less computer talk- theres no line to follow "Marvelous! A Hunter is a Hunter even within a dream!" and change when Micolash turns to the next part of his sentence, being "But not so fast..." So if you didn't explicitly know that Micolash has, say, 10 separate audio files for his full boss dialog, *its possible an extra file or two was just missed/written off for being something else.* I mean as far as some people are aware, an extra Micolash_Audio11.mp3 could've just been him moaning.
      However! How files and code lines are organized and written depend entirely on the programmer- the same way some games use full spheres or just cones for eyes in certain models. Its a stylistic choice. So the cut content thats being brought to light could've also just been locked away somewhere deep within the files of what was the old build. Which could've also been locked away because its cut content and probably hard to access (you certainly wouldn't want the computer to accidentally read that line and execute it, so to put simply: This file was floating in the void.) Same applies to cut models/enemies - they exist, but float in the void because the game isn't supposed to be rendering them. Animations and skeletons would be attached to that specific model as well. So if you can't find one, theres a chance won't find the other. *So really it could be that being we only recently got full access to this hidden void + the trend of looking deeper in how soulsborne games work causing people to pay a little bit extra attention.*
      Edit: Vaati himself actually admits that reading/hacking bloodborne files has only recently become more refined, so the answer is most certainty is my finishing statement. We've only just scratched the surface of cut content my friend!

      People are datamining Elden Ring to find all sorts of 'cut' dialogue lines and other bits of code still present in the retail release but given that none of that is meant as a part of the played game experience, how much quality does it really have? At what point are people just obsessively digging up the bones of previous builds to headcanon significance into the final product? Ironic that this would come from a game with an intrinsic message warning about the perils of digging to deep and unhealthy fascination with the inscrutable and unknown.

Since Mergo is removed from Queen Yarnham, a wet-nurse is needed to supply the blood (not milk in this instance) Mergo requires to produce more for the nightmare... sadly Mergo's source is cursed with beasthood.
    If you look closely, most portions of the wet-nurse's outfit are designed to dazzle the observer, but cut the wearer making them bleed profusely. Many of the wet-nurse's arms are wrapped tightly in ornamental jewelry acting as tourniquets to control the Mergo's "feeding" process and even her blades curve/cut inwardly which implies their genuine use; to keep fresh twisted beastblood poisoning Mergo... the waking world... and you.

      I’ve always had the feeling that the presentation of Wet Nurse and her associated lore was intentionally vague. The Hunter’s quest and story are pretty ancillary to what’s going on with Mensis and Queen Yharnam; at this point The Hunter is really only concerned with stopping the nightmare and killing more Great Ones, so Mergo’s background and the circumstances of his existence aren’t of much concern. In fact, I think the lack of explanation kind of further drives home the point that The Hunter is in way too deep at that point in the story, and is hanging on the precipice of madness.

      Not so much 'half-realised' as 'condensed'. I think they sought to conserve unnecessary detail (which sounds odd for From Software, but bear with me here) and try to convey the same traits in a shorter scene, to save on space. Effective storytelling in video games involves careful balance of detail vs resources. Anything that's missing can always be added later in flavour text, which is something From always likes to do.

She is a succubus, a demon of dreams and nightmares who seeks to propagate herself. She is an ubume/kokakuchou youkai, the avian spirit of a mother who died in late pregnancy or childbirth. She's an angel, a winged attendant of a god. She is Senjuu Kannon, the multi-armed goddess of mercy in Buddhism who welcomes the virtuous into the Pure Land/Paradise. I understand they have to make revisions and cuts to complete the game so sometimes really interesting elements don’t make it to the final product. The final cut scene looks like a hybrid of the first and final revision, going for the drop down entrance while maintaining the gentle handling of the baby. When I encountered her the first time, this cut scene looked like she was trying to protect Mergo from the hunter and initiated the fight for that purpose. I think that last revision with her violently dropping down would have given a completely different vibe and contradict what the game was leading up to.

    In my YT suggestions the thumbnail for this video had its title partially cut off by the video length display, so it read "Bloodborne cut content: Mergo and the succ"

    I think I like the fourth version best if it had the hunter dashing out of the way. It gets the creeping dread for the player of "what is that behind me", especially on a first playthrough when they genuinely don't know, and the sudden payoff where she lunges for Mergo. But without the hunter animation it loses some clarity in where they went between shots. And sure it would have made the boss feel too similar to Oceiros, but that's DS3's problem not Bloodborne's.
