Thank you so much for covering Skald! It really means so much to me ❤ The game has seen a massive amount of polish in the last two weeks so I can promise you that the game we're dropping tomorrow is a retro-CRPG fan's dream! As always, much love from Norway!
Can't see a release price on steam. How much will this set us back, looks good from what ive seen.
@@fistimusmaximus6576 15 USD :-D
I have been so excited for this game for what feels like years. I can already tell you’ve done a great job, can’t wait to play tomorrow!
Heia fra Norge! This looks super interesting and glad Morti made a video about it as it's right down my alley. Make us proud with a good release!
@@HellAngel275 Tusen takk :-)
I'm 100% cool with retro graphics. It's interesting to see titles with retro graphics with modern gameplay elements. Imagine a game like Daggerfall with its old school style graphics but with a modern open world system.
I agree. Big part of the draw for me. I’d also much rather play a lower budget game with awesome retro visuals, than a low-budget game that spends all its money on 3D I don’t care about
As long as it's not a Ubisoft open world, eh?
@@JesseDylanMusic Interesting that we haven't had anything like that yet. I'm all for it, especially since modern titles seem to want to set my laptop on fire.
It's not super old school graphics but the creators of Daggerfall just launched a kickstarter for a spiritual successor. It's called The Wayward Realms
I would LOVE a modern Daggerfall style open world game. I STILL play Daggerfall to this day. Of course now I am playing the updated Unity version. But the game never gets old to me.
This game looks like some old school fun!
This reminds me of the old SSI games, mixed with Ultima and some JRPGs, as well as some later Interactive Fiction games (yes, I'm old) from the BBC/Acorn Electron/Commodore 64/Atari ST era.
Good old SSI along with The Elder Scrolls and Might & Magic it was like my pc monitor becoming a mystical portal into worlds of pure imagination manifested into reality. Loved my Commodore Amiga 500 back in the day before jumping over to a 486 intel. What a transformative time to have gotten into home computers.
SSI's Buck Rogers XXVC rpgs using the TSR ruleset were an absolute blast.
@@77Arcturus Same. Amiga 500 was awesome. My friends and I had some good times because of that sleek little dream machine. And then 3D happened with Looking Glass and ID and it was onto the 486.
@@synchc Loved the Buck Rogers game back in the day. This game takes me back to my C64 days.
Wish digital eclipse could get hired to work their magic on a lot of those old crpgs (SSI in particular)
Great first impressions, looking forward to the full review.
Retro graphics and Lovecraft themes? Ok im interested
man I just got a press release about this in my inbox and it looked SO good! I'm glad to see you covering it
It's the unique game system and the way the role playing elements and woven into the main story in the early demo, that put this game on my radar. And so far, i like what i see, quite a lot. As soon as i finish with Songs of Conquest, i am giving this one a try, the retro graphics don't really bother me, i'm fairly neutral to this art style. I will just pretend i play something from late 80's or early 90's.
I just put this on my wishlist the other day because it looked so interesting.
I've been waiting for this one for years. It's almost here!
Game looks very cool, I look forward to the full review.
I really enjoyed my time with the demo and I can't wait to dive into this one tomorrow. I've been trying to semi rush Ghosts of Tsushima to finish it before then, but I still have half of Act 3 and IKI island to do so it's not gonna be close. I will still give Skald a few hours of my time and try to juggle in between that and Ghosts.
This looks like downright my alley. Thanks for covering it! Wishlisting it now
Reminds me of the old gold box AD&D. It looks very interesting.
I'm almost certainly going to get this one, but I still want to see your full review. The visuals is one of the big reasons I want to play this game since it brings back some good childhood memories!
I loved the demo, will probably buy
Been waiting for this
seeing one of the dialogue lines as "Magi's Ball's" cracked me up pretty good
And the in world explanation is that long term magic users, despite becoming very powerful, also become sterile :-)
This is me:
- Gets a Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- Gets an RTX 4070 Super
- Gets 32GB of DDR5
- Gets excited about and plays almost exclusively games that look like they were made in the early 90s and can be played on a potato.
- ???
- PROFIT 😆
AAA is failing to provide anything new or interesting these days and that's where the graphically demanding games tend to be!
it's all future proofing when people start making things that look like ps1/ps2 quality much easier
Been excited for this one!
The 8-bit visuals are part of the appeal for me. I’d much rather a creative game with retro visuals, than an uncreative AAA thing that puts all its money into graphics.
THIS
@@SkaldRPG I just wanted to say that I'm a huge fan of your game, I got it yesterday and played for 12 consecutive hours, which I know probably isn't very healthy but I just couldn't pull myself away from it, I was completely enthralled. In regards to the graphics, I am completely in love with the art direction and the actual implementation of that art, and I know it's not just nostalgia because I was born in 1997 and even though I'd really love to own one I've never even seen a Commodore 64 or any other 8 bit computer in person. Excellent work!
Depending on the price I do have interest in it for sure.
$15
This looks great. Waiting for the full review
From just playing the tutorial I'm hooked I'm for sure gonna play this I love how this took the classic D&D feel and made it much more approachable.
Definitely going to check this one out
Have this on my wishlist, looking forward to your review. Should hopefully have enough time to get through it before Elden Ring DLC drops.
I am SO friggin sold.
Having watched Majuular's videos on Ultima, this piques my interest as an old school take on the genre with modern sensibilities behind it. There's definitely something to be gained from matching the two up.
Was so into this from the demo. Really hoping it lives up to the vibes.
I normally like pixel art, but those graphics are exhausting to look at...
This looks like a really cool game, love retro RPGs and Lovecraftian horror themes.
There will be blood! Looks awesome.
I'm so excited for this!
For me as elder millennial, these kind of games are literally childhood :) Very interesting concept.
Awesome review as always, the only thing I dind't quite like was the texture kinda hurt my eyes trying to decipher what is what during combat in certain instances.
Totally get it's not everyone's cup of tea but I can at least say this: The game looks much crisper on your actual screen. One of the big disadvantages with such a retro game is that any kind of compression (such as done by CZcams) makes it look a lot less crisp than it actually looks on screen :-)
Thanks for the video. Now I'm kind of curious how the audio is. Do they pull of some unnerving 8-bit melodies? Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.
I would say audio slaps but I may be biased :-D
Cant wait to play this :3
I love the esthetic and the general feel of the game, I really appreciate devs adventuring in this genre with this style. With the little I now, I can see that the amount of work here is outstanding. I think the game would have greatly benefited from some more character animations. Animation is becoming more and more like a second thought or something you can compromise, not saying is this devs case, but in my opinion, it adds high value and immersion to any game genere and style.
oh that gives big eye of the beholder vibes
Ive been waiting on this one. Bought it! Love it so far
Is there a way to look at potential spells etc you can get so you can plan out your build?
Not that I saw, but my understanding is the full release build has some tweaks to that screen but I'm not sure if that will be one of them
Yes! The spell-system has been massively overhauled since we sent out press copies! Casters are now both more powerful and easy/fun to build :-)
Oh i'm definitely getting this game.
Now it's out and I'm very tempted to buy, but I need to get through Rogue Trader first!
Good show sir
The Ultima V vibes are strong with this one!
Have you heard of Caves of Lore? Another retro CRPG made by a solo dev. I get similar vibes.
Feeling that C64 colour pallette.
This is exact kind of game I want to enjoy on the Steam Deck.
Did they mention a rough play time? Curious if it's a shorter game or full blown rpg.
They’ve said 15-20 hours to be safe, but that every playthrough they’ve seen has been more like 30-50 hours
So do you have any idea how long the game will be? Or how many hours have you spent on it so far?
Dev has said 15-20 hours to be safe, but that every playthrough they’ve seen has been more like 30-50 hours. I’m slow, so I’m sure I’ll be more on the long side. Also meant to be replayable.
@@JesseDylanMusic That is a decent amount of time! Råtner slow myself, so will probably spend more time on it
I don't think we've ever had a run under 20 hours tbh. And then it depends a bit on difficulty and how much you read. You'll easily clock 30 :-)
I grew up with the Amstrad cpc 6128 and then the Amiga. I LOVE how this game looks.
Thank you so much! HOpe you buy it today!
@@SkaldRPG Just bought it, at 18:57 😎
Really interested in the game. Does this game run on the Steam Deck?
Thank you for this review! I've been waiting for this game since EA. Do you plan on reviewing Dread Delusion?
No current plans, but never say never
Found out about the game cause Swen Vincke tweeted about it. Bought the deluxe edition just to support them.
So excited for this
Im not a huge fan of the art style personally, but I think Im going to still check out Skald. I got started in RPGs with Baldurs Gate 2 so that 8 bit style is a bit before my time
I hope they have controller support in the future so I can play on my Ally.
If only they had animated style fighting in the battles like Shining Force, looks like a cool game though going to try it.
Finally!
This game would be great on Evercade.
Mad respect for even considering playing a new game with graphics from the 80s after getting used to games with the latest graphics.
Modern graphics are wrecking the industry with massive budgets and uncreative design
@@JesseDylanMusic I'm fine with older graphics, but with game elements being simple also. These modern retro games are trying to force complex game mechanics with visually limited game elements. Can't have it both ways.
@@Pgr-pt5ep It's a challenge for sure. The one thing I will say is that the game looks terrible after youtube compresses it. It honestly looks a lot crisper when seen live :-)
and if we still used CRT's the text would be easy to read.
That orange background was a killer in the demo - is that change-able?
Yes indeed! You can now toggle background colors on text boxes (light brown, dark brown and black) :-)
I cant even tell what im looking at. the graphics make it hard to see. is it difficult to tell what to do in this game ?
Not really
@@MortismalGaming I'll give it a shot. Not my style of game, I'm more of a shooter type of person. But if it has close to 5 stars worth a shot.
❤❤❤
Bought and returned within an hour. I just couldn't see anything because the graphics are what they are. Hard on the eyes from the battle screen to the menus.
Wishlisted.
I was it was made for ios so i could play it on my ipad with keybaord and trackpad or if they added dit on one of the ipad emulators now supported by apple. Seirously since getting the magic keybaord i dont even touch my mac much less my older pc which probably could run this game but i want ease of access and portability and the ip[ad provides this for me.
Any chance you'll do a review/first impressions of Ice Wind Dale II's Enhanced Edition mod?
No, I dont review mods, looks cool though
Me: You can customize the font size, color, style... Great!!
DS fans: Oooh!! Won't somebody, please, think of the way developers want you to play the game!!??
Gronk!
pants! I NEED MORE PAAAANTSS
I love cRPGs but i dont know why I cant enjoy 80's graphics. Late 90's graphics like BG1 I am fine with. Good Luck
free comment!
Im all about retro but this games visuals are rough.
Look very interesting. The only off-putting thing for me is too much dithering in the colors ... it looks really ugly (at least on your video). IMHO 8-bit graphics should not mean 16 colors max. However I will still wait for the review after 100% before purchasing it.
I don't like the look of the grass. The rest of the pixel art looks ok,... but even with good colors....
Stardew valley has its charm but this style goes back in time almost to the level of the first dwarf fortress.
Even the new dwarf fortress looks too weak when compared to the style of Rimworld/Heroes3/Songs of Conquest.
The choose a rather washed out colour palette, like C64 ish
Badly needs some overhauls of the tactical combat for visual clarity. Weather effects on top of text on top of garish background tiles just does not work in 8-bit graphics. Otherwise a cool-looking flashback to the old Gold Box games.
Sounds cool, just wish it was a bit easier on the eyes and didn’t look like a deep fried meme.
The game looks much crisper on your actual screen. One of the big disadvantages with such a retro game is that any kind of compression (such as done by CZcams) makes it look a lot less crisp than it actually looks on screen :-) I can guarantee you that the came is 100% pixel perfect when seen on your own monitor :-)
I usually love retro looking games, but for some reason this was one doesn't appeal to me. The game sound cool, maybe I'll check a demo out and see if it grows on me.
I wouldn't mind the retro look,
but in what's shown here I can hardly understand what is a character VS what is background,
especially during combat events.
This means that, unfortunately, I basically cannot play this game.
Bummer...
Thanks for your videos!
Yeah. Even Ultima manages to be more visually appealing.
Totally get it's not everyone's cup of tea but I can at least say this: The game looks much crisper on your actual screen. One of the big disadvantages with such a retro game is that any kind of compression (such as done by CZcams) makes it look a lot less crisp than it actually looks on screen :-)
@@SkaldRPG I'll keep that in mind, since the game is otherwise pretty interesting to me.
Thanks for the info!
This game feels like staring at a tv noise. Very hard on the eyes.
I'm not against retro but I can't see wtf is going on at all.
The presentation for me is too pixelated. And I am not against pixelart games, since I played a lot of SNES jrpgs, and I even like/love a lot of modern pixelart games like Children of Morta, Hero Siege, Chronicon, Sea of Stars and Chained Echoes. But this one, like the dungeon and world map exploration, they are too pixelated for my taste. But anyway, just my taste, but good luck to the game, and thanks for the preview.
Woof. Man I normally don't care about graphics but...woof. This one is a hard no. That is just some muddied nonsense on screen. I've played all the Ultima games, I don't ever remember anything being this visually indistinct.

He reviews this game, yet wont cover the Ultima series...
Nope, not for me .
