    My favorite push mower is a 15 year old Briggs mower that three owners gave up on before I got it for free. I got it running and keep it maintained, and it is by far the most reliable mower I have. If you take care of your machines, they will take care of you.

    I do my repairs as a hobby as well, though I hope to eventually turn it into a sustainable business. I am working on a Snapper mower for a customer right now that I have had for several months. I won't make any money on it, but he will have a mower back that hadn't run in several years, and I was able to work on something I have never worked on before.

    Good idea for the swap. Those bearings that broke off are about $20 to 30 a piece. I think the new deck is 100 times better.
    Just use the old mower as a chipper . Drill a hole in the front with a hole saw and fasten or weld some pipe. Voila! A chipper!

  • @jesterr7133
    @jesterr7133 Před 11 měsíci

    Sometimes weird and unexplainible things happen with lawnmowers. I loaned one of my Troy Bilt riding mowers to my mom, and she called me and said that the blades quit turning. When I went to look at it, one of the metal belt guards on the top of the deck was completely broken off. Nothing was left but the two corners that were held in place by the mounting bolts. I never even found the guard, despite looking all over that lady's yard. I cannot come up with any plausible scenario beyond something getting thrown up onto the deck and getting caught in one of the pulleys. The spindle bearing on that side was damaged as well, and that mower was out of commission for an entire season before I got around to figuring out all the various issues.

  • @jesterr7133
    @jesterr7133 Před 11 měsíci

    I don't know what mowers are going for in your neck of the woods, but they usually go for $50-$75 in the condition that mower was in. At that price, getting a season or two out of it is a logical expectation. I would warranty one if it came back immediately, but I probably wouldn't do it a year later, especially if they brought it to me in the condition that one was in.

  • @tnrodgers
    @tnrodgers Před 11 měsíci

    I agree with the checklist. I do recommend a torque wrench for the blade, and since you have it in hand, use it for the head. Blades coming off at that rate of speed are not good. This is for a customer, it provides safety/legal credence.

    I think it depends on how much they paid to begin with, did they barter with you, this is what I did when I used to sell cars, those who wanted a heavy discount got treated the usual but those who didn't barter got the best treatment with warranty and repairs, everything depends on the customer's attitude towards you , the fixer or the seller, it's like I mentioned before it's your life and what you repair is up to you and how they treat you, never suck up to customers as they need you you.

    As an avid "Take care of my equipment!" kind of guy so I am looking for any extra tips. I have a 2019 Honda HRX217. Every year I change the oil, clean the air filter (I use a pre-filter), put on sharpened blades, and change the plug every other year. So looking at the owners manual I see that the pinion gears need to be greased and rear wheel adjusters (do I use WD-40 or lithium grease and do I need to take them off and clean them), does a fuel tank filter need to be replaced, and last but, not least, next is valve clearance. I do not want to attempt this. So should I take it to the dealer for this only or do the $200 service every 5 years which is where I am. Thank you so very much and your videos shine a light on fixing and people. Nice job!

    • @INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
      @INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE  Před 11 měsíci

      you don't need to remove the gears to lube them but I use WD40. no unless you have a fueling issue, don't touch the Fuel filter, As for the valve clearance, unless you have a lot of run time, on your 2019 model, it may not need it. So I wouldn't worry about it just yet.
