Hey Google, What's the best voice assistant?
You may be new to a smart home setup, interested in making a switch, or just generally curious. Either way, Slickdeals hosts Pete King and Juan Bagnell did the research to find out what makes Alexa and/or Google Assistant the best smart home manager. Find out where each system excels, and where you might run into issues or holdups with each. And, of course, since this is Slickdeals, we cover the affordability of each system. This is "WhichWon?"

I like Google more for its compatibility. Amazon doesn't have as closed of an ecosystem as Apple, but they certainly contract with OEMs to make an Alexa only varient. This is why I don't like Amazon and Apple smart products. I woul like custom wake words per device, and would love announcements from my Google assistant speakers.

I struggle with our alexa devices, we have a large home and lots of rooms. Both my wife and I create custom commands to manage our devices - but these commands don't always sync properly. We have 4 smart lights in our ceiling fan in the bedroom - if we are in my wife's account "go to bed" turns all of them off. If I am in my account - "go to bed" turns out 3 of the four - for example. Also, the skills are LOW quality in my opinion. Most of them feel like an experiment that some dev out there published and then lost interest in - point being - I don't care about skills anymore. How does Google handle the switch accounts shuffle - which we hate?

I've been with Google for years so I really wanted a couple of Nest speakers to work for me but after getting them home and listening to them in the intended room, they just weren't cutting it for me. I returned them and decided to give the Echo, 4th gen, a trial. Got them home and set them up....the sound was night and day better plus they provide the option to plug in an auxiliary item and also pair with a sub-woofer. Neither of these options are even available on the Nest. I was so impressed with the Echos that I purchased the sub woofer immediately and, as usual for amazon, it was at my front door the next day. It of course has added a whole new dimension of sound to the set up. So impressed with this experience I seriously going to have to re-think my loyalty to Google for any future smart home equipment.

In my opinion Amazon ruined what they had. Everything is a subscription, and they keep going up. If you want to use all features you're over 200 bucks a year and still the AI is beyond frustrating to deal with. For instance you ask a simple question, you get an answer (sometimes) but followed up with a feature question, or a question about something else. It's annoying - answer my question and shut up!

That’s true, Google Assistant gives very short spoken responses for information consults comparing to Alexa, when I ask for word definitions she only gives the first one and not all of them like Alexa does.
It’s ok to get precise answers but wait… Here comes the problem: When I ask Google Assistant to give me more information about the topic after giving me the initial spoken result, she can’t understand me or replies with something that has nothing to do, in stead of reading the complete article, a big deal for people with visual disabilities like me because if you have an Android phone the Talkback screen reader is very difficult to use and the smart speakers and headphones Don’t have a display, but using an iPhone can result.
Yeah, I’ve tryed different commands, tell me more, give me more information, read me more, but it just doesn’t work, and Alexa can read the complete article if you ask her for more information, why Assistant can’t do this having the Google searcher inside?, that’s an issue, nobody talks about it and Google needs to be aware of this problem and fix it
