  • In this video I have a look at a customers Honda Passport with the big 3.2 that has the check engine light on with a P0502 active in it. This indicates that the PCM is not seeing any speed signal however the speedometer works just fine. Let's see what the problem is.

From my experience (ontario Canada), most shops aren't out to screw customers intentionally... they are just so busy everyday that they don't take the time to verify anything. Things get busy, so they try to hire someone new and noone has the time to babysit the new guy who may mangle up a few cars before he learns in his own time.

I'd add a qualifier to that. I was in the business many years, and yes there were quite a few predatory shops. But on today's vehicles there are a whole bunch of shops without the investment in tools along with minimally trained techs. Either way, the customer loses.

If a shop can take a vehicle on 2 hours notice or less they are going to get a lot of work. That they can do that says a lot about the work they do. Most of the general public doesn't understand this they just want to take it to the place that says they can work on it the soonest. To the more experienced customer it's more like going to the restaurant that has a wait every night of the week. You know know it's going to be better than the one that's half empty on a Saturday night.

He did work for Holman Moody, and I can see him saying that he has no clue what the blue/yellow wire does for steering angle, but we need to get the lasers to make sure front end is correct. Well, this was a nice tongue in cheek thriller diagnosis !!! Following the yellow brick road from the source to the target. And how a dropped "" Medical Cannabis seed "" lookalike in the connector will mess up your day !!!! Sleuth Eric Holmes deduced the cause and applied the cure !!! Now the customer is a happy camper without any costly parts shotgunned. Well done PRNY SMA ASE Super Master mechanic Eric !!! Quality work from a quality garage. And we the people have learned another valuable lesson - have patience, start at the source and troubleshoot to the ending - you WILL achieve a definite result !!!!!! I await the next job to see what it will entail !!!! 😃😸💯👍

Very cool Eric! I love your demo with the oscilloscope, along with discussion of the source/manufacturer of the ECM and its history. Also the clear explanations you give of each step in the troubleshooting process makes it really engaging and more dramatic than it has any right to be. I imagine if you brought in a sponsor or two you could justify spending even more time making in-depth content for us!
